Review: Kill Dil'

Ranveer Singh's lovable character is the saving grace of this regurgitated tale of guns and romance

The story of Kill Dil is as old as the hills.

Two orphans (Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar) are abandoned at birth in a dustbin and a ruthless criminal (Govinda) stumbles upon them and takes them under his wing.

Under Govinda's warped idea of parenting, they take to guns and kill people ruthlessly on his bidding. The twist in this proverbial worn-out tale comes in the form of the luminous beauty Disha, played by Parineeti Chopra, who strikes Dev's fancy. In a flash, Dev wants to exit his filthy, morbid world.

It's a premise that has been regurgitated by several Bollywood filmmakers with mediocre success. But what sets Kill Dil apart is the endearing performance by Singh. He's as adorable as a wounded puppy and you may find yourself smiling at some of his antics in his quest to be a reformed rake.

Chopra, as the alluring woman with pots of money and a swanky red convertible, looks glamorous. But if you are looking for some soul there, you might be distracted by her red lips and her impossibly-perfect tresses.

The couple do have chemistry, but the innumerable songs at regular intervals nips that potential right at the bud. When you have more than four songs in the first half, it becomes clear that Kill Dil is suffering from an identity crisis of sorts. Should it be a musical that celebrates love or should it be an ode to The Godfather-inspired crime dramas must have been one of the questions that plagued director Shaad Ali.

In the end, it's a messy mish-mash of both. But to Ali's credit, he doesn't overdramatise situations by making it unnecessarily melodramatic. The confrontations, conflicts and its resolutions are swift. If director Ali had done away with the songs, he would have done his film a huge favour.

Singh may have had the best lines, but actor Ali Zafar as Tutu complements him well as his partner in crime. Kill Dil doesn't offer any riveting twists, but you don't feel like putting a bullet to your head at the end of it either. Watch it if you love Singh and his nervous energy.

Kill Dil movie review

The gangland and the mafia world is a new trend that is being followed in Bollywood and directors are keen on presenting different tales from their point of view. Now here we have Shaad Ali, who has a distinguished gang story from YRF's earlier release Gunday' but a similar presentation.

Stars- Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra, Govinda
Director- Shaad Ali
Music- Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Kill Dil has its characters driven by fashion class. They love jackets and goggles even when they are gunning down the targets given or being punched by their foes. The makers have the cinematic liberty and we allow them to take its full advantage. But Shaad Ali despite taking much liberty for Kill Dil doesn't kill the sole purpose of the entire movie. The drama has the tendency to keep you hooked to your seats without any forced scene to spoil the mood.

The Saathiya' and Bunty and Bubly' fame director has made a good recovery from his last disaster Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' and will be appreciated for his work.

Kill Dil opens with teenage brothers-like-friends Tutu (Ali Zafar) and Dev (Ranveer Singh) who are abandoned and weak. But the local goon Bhaiyaji (Govinda) takes the duo under his wings and trains them to be professional killers.

Enter Disha (Parineeti Chopra), a free spirited lady into Dev's life. And the two fall in love with each other but Bhaiyaji does not accept their relationship. Now Dev has two choices, either to Kill' or Dil'.

Now, don't be fooled by its deja-vu premise. Kill Dil has innovation with its altered screenplay and execution. Yes, the logics take a back seat here but not to an extent that spoils the flow. The director mostly uses the dialogues and his character, the blend of which helps in making this movie entertaining.

Little predictable but who cares when you are supplied with ample moving scenes. Take the camaraderie of the two friends- Dev and Tutu or their equation with Bhaiyaji', the moments never fall short of amusement.

The love chemistry between Disha and Dev takes a special mention here with their adorable interaction and so interesting are their performances.

Kill Dil movie review

But it's Govinda who steals the show. It's hard to believe that it's the same actor who did Hero No. 1' in 90s. The anti-hero role he plays is par excellence.

Ranveer Singh who usually has sported a grungy look with stubble, tones down for his soft character. He brings out the softer, innocent and endearing act with efficiency.

Parineeti Chopra after a lot of de-glam roles finally gets to show her alluring side while her act compliments the scene.

Ali Zafar plays his character with perfect attitude. Mostly we have seen him in comic roles but as a serious goon he surprises us all.

Music also comes out as a big winner. The trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has given brilliant music in the past and this time again they compose a brilliant score altogether. Bol Beliya and Sajde are our picks from the album.
