BACKSTAGE PASS: FILM - PIKU

By Roshmila Bhattacharya, Mumbai Mirror | May 6, 2015, 12.00 AM IST

Backstage pass: Film - PIKU
(L) Juhi Chaturvedi
When motions and emotions met on a page

Juhi Chaturvedi grew up with a hypochondriac grandfather who would discuss his ailments with his doctor in great detail. "And dining table conversations revolved around motions and constipation was discussed 24x7," reminisces the story, screenplay and dialogue writer of Shoojit Sircar's upcoming family drama, Piku.

Amitabh Bachchan's character in the film, Bhashkar Banerjee, a quirky and cranky Bengali babu who is visibly unhappy if his health reports come up 'normal', is modelled on Juhi's dadaji, a wellread gentleman who with advancing age and the lingering shadow of death, became obsessed with his health and gave the film its tonguein-cheek catchline, Insaan ka emotion uske motion se juda hota hai. "That for me is the truth of life. If you are unhappy inside the loo, you will never be happy outside it. The root to most of our problems is the stomach. If the gastro-intestinal track is working fine, then you're usually in good shape and spirits," she reasons.

Juhi admits that she had enough material to spin a story but it was a challenge doing it hygienically. Even when she took the idea to Shoojit, he'd laughed, "After sperm donation (Vicky Donor) you now want to make a film about constipation?"

However, as she points out, the film is not just about potty humour and crass gags, it's about a working girl having to take care of an elderly parent when she wants to live her own life, find someone suitable to share it with her and balance her career. "I understood all this because I'm married and my father lives with me. And as a child, I had to accept this and recalibrate my life accordingly," Juhi asserts.

She was very clear while writing the film that she wanted Amitabh Bachchan to play the father for the experience and versatility he could bring to the role. And that she wanted Irrfan Khan to play Rana because as a seasoned actor he'd know how to look at the girl, when to smile and when to remain silent, without trying too hard to please her. "There's a lot of madhurta (sweetness) and simplicity in the relationship between Rana and Piku and though there's a visible age difference between Irrfan and Deepika (Padukone) I was confident that the audience would forget it when watching them on screen," she asserts.

The character she struggled with on paper was Piku. Even the name took time coming and, as Juhi admits, without a name she can't write a single word. Since her nickname is Ranu , her brother's Vinu and she has cousins called Chiku and Chinu, Piku just popped up as a 'daak naam' and despite her best attempts, she couldn't come up with a formal name for her.

"So I just decided to stick to Piku, baba's little girl, and when we narrated the script to Deepika she said, 'I know this girl , she's me.' And admitted that she shared Piku's unconditional love for her parents and so understood her relationship with her father," recalls Juhi.

And has Juhi's own father seen the film? "Not yet," she smiles. "But I know he'll find traces of himself and his father in Piku and others will also see people near and dear to them in these characters too. Anurag Kashyap finds his nanaji and Shoojit his family. This is not your usual fantasy drama, I don't think I can write one."

Juhi was an art director in an ad agency who was coaxed by her boss to write 30-second films because being from Lucknow, the lingo and the words came easy. "Then, Shoojit who'd directed some of these films asked me to write the dialogue for Shoebite. The film is yet to release but then he took a risk again with me in Vicky Donor. And that's how I'm talking to you now about motions and emotions," she says.

Q. Will Piku open better than Shamitabh?

Ans.
It should as the cast is better but it won't beat by leaps and bound. These sort of films have their limits but sadly week in week out there is this sort of film which can never really get a big audience to the theaters.

Piku should open around 2cr and then grow from there. Then it will be declared a hit rather than opening at 6cr and then falling from there. Similar thing happened to Fanny.

I thought Irrfan would look down upon me: Deepika Padukone

PTI | May 06, 2015, 15.05 pm IST

New Delhi: Given his acclaimed stature as a performer, actress Deepika Padukone felt her "Piku" co-star Irrfan Khan would not interact with a "commercial heroine" like her. Deepika, 29, who is paired opposite Irrfan for the first time in the Shoojit Sircar's-directed film, said he proved her wrong with his unassuming and humble nature.

"I met him for the first time on the film's set. The movie is about discovering relationships and Irrfan and I actually discovered each other during the shoot. It was one of those experiences when I was enacting what I was living. I thought he would be an intense actor, an intense person, everything about him is intense, courtesy media's perception. I thought he would be stern and not interact and look down upon me thinking me being a commercial heroine. But he is very different from that," Deepika told reporters here.

The "Ram Leela" actress admitted that over the course of the film's shooting, she became an admirer of Irrfan's sense of humour. "He is humorous. There are similarities between us like he is also shy... He talks less but when he says, it is very funny. I think his comic timing is pretty untapped. And no amount of explanation can give justice to the fine talent that he is," she said.

Deepika plays Piku Banerjee, an independent working woman based in Delhi and megastar Amitabh Bachchan stars as her father Bhashkor Banerjee in the film. The "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" star credited Irffan and Bachchan for making her comfortable on the set and said they reminded her of Shah Rukh Khan, who also put her at ease during the filming of her debut film "Om Shanti Om".

"Irrfan and Amit ji have a lot to contribution to the film by making me feel comfortable in their presence. It was similar to how Shah Rukh made me feel during 'Om Shanti Om'. I never felt intimidated. They are so comfortable with who they are," she said.

The actress said her character was challenging and the start-to-finish manner of shooting was a new experience for her. "Piku was a challenging character because she is very chaotic, she tries to multi-task and with that I had to say dialogues too so it was a new experience for me, it was almost a theatre-like experience. I have learnt a lot from this film. It was such a calm, peaceful shooting experience and we shot it linearly so on the last day we all were like 'When will we get to meet each other again?' We knew we would miss each other a lot. It was extremely pleasant shooting for 'Piku'," she said.

The slice of life movie hits theatres this Friday.

Deepika Padukone supports Gokuldham society's save the girl child' initiative
Deepika Padukone with the cast of 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah'

After saving a girl child, the residents of Gokuldham are lauded for their heroic act and flooded with congratulatory greetings from across the city. Even Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone calls Daya (played by Disha Vakani) to personally congratulate her for fighting injustice and helping Khushi reunite with her biological parents. During the conversation, the actress also conveys a keen desire to visit Gokuldham and see Khushi herself. Daya invites Khushi's mother Surbhi to Gokuldham. The residents are excited to have both Deepika and Khushi in their vicinity.

Deepika, who is given a warm welcome, spends time with Khushi and shares her experience of being a daughter in real life and in her upcoming movie. She also sends across an important message on how gender discrimination will hamper the progress of the nation and should be stopped.

Disha says, "We had a wonderful time shooting with Deepika. It was an amazing experience to have her on the set. We all clicked pictures with her and Khushi. Together we pledged support for the 'save the girl child' campaign. Even in her new movie, Deepika plays the role of a head-strong architect who takes care of her father by herself. This re-emphasises our social message to treat a girl child equally and that given an opportunity, a girl can be as successful as a boy."

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah airs Monday to Friday at 8.30 pm on SAB TV.
