thats why i respect irani's, Sikhs, Turk who i've seen all speak their language fluently with correct diction and no trace of a western accent they speak like they're from India back home or from which country their parents are from despite living in West, here its used as mark of shame if you dont know your language spoken by your parents and i agree with it. You should be bilingual and v good in both languiages

here's one thing i'd like to clarify to most people making this argument. keep in mind that, for a good part of recorded history of india, what we know as india today has been collection of kingdoms. occasionally a good majority (but not necessarily all) of these various kingdoms came under the wing of a greater empire somewhat consolidating them during their reign. some of the kingdoms in the very south of india were often not part of the greater exapansion of the big empires like mughal, or maurya, and also generally not subject to the same cultural invasions of the north. this has added to the cultural distinctness between the very south and the north. add to this the fact that all the regions (states, kingdoms, etc) of india did not come together under a bigger tent until the british empire. so despite the fact that we're all indians, we all have some cultural similarities, we also have differences, and for the south indians, when you choose another regional indian language as national language, they look at it as you're displacing their own cultural heritage and identity, which is their main contention.

now getting back to the whole point about sonam's claim - i'd say its clear that she's embarassed about claiming sindhi, punjabi or hindi as her first language. your first language is not the same as the language you're most proficient with. my first language is tamil - its wht i learned basic communication phrases in at home - things like mom, dad, food, house, i'm hungry, i'm sleepy, i'm hurt, etc. i didn't learn how to read or write in it, i didn't learn the letters in it - just the spoken language at home. i even learned some basic english words like apple, ice cream, cycle, scooter, balloon - that doesn't mean that english was my first language. i learned hindi and marathi from growing up in mumbai, VERY early on - before i even went to kindergarten. i learned my ABCs at home before kg and in school, all the way from kg. despite tamil being my first language i'm the least proficient in it - english is without a doubt my most proficient language, followed by hindi but i'd never claim either of these were my first language.

First language and now national language and then world's business language.

India has 26 official languages. Nobody is forcing anybody to speak a particular language.

Most south Indians I know here in NZ know Hindi but refuse to speak or cant speak. In fact, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam, Kannad ppl refuse to acknowledge others languages. Thats a height of false pride amongst themselves. They think North Indians r from Aryan athenicity.. which was a MAJOR humbug Brits thrown to India b4 even they left.

Yes, bharat varsh was spread from Afghanistan to all India today to Bangladesh to Thailand.

Then we know what happened. The mother of all Indian languages is SANSKRIT. It then had so many branches.. Devnagri is mother of Gujarati and Nepali.

The thing is all of North India speak, accept and take proud in Hindi being our National language. Even thou our Father of Nation is Mahatma Gandhi (Gujju), National anthem writer is Bengali (Ravindra Tagore), First PM of India was more English than Indian (motherfucher Nehru), The constitute maker was dalit (untochables).

North has accepted HIndi as National language but South is still wondering is it Tamil, Telugu, Kannad, Malayalam.. or ENGLISH?

Now can u see the hypocrisy? HIndi nahi manjoor, English thik hai.

They know Hindi well, but refuse to accept it. I know so many Southies here in Auckland. Thier English accents r so heavily influenced by their native language... the Appu character in The Simpsons series was created. North Indians dont speak English like that.

I dont what pride wud hurt Southies to accept Hindi as national language than English? I wud never know. They never took brunt of participation mass murders..
----------------------------
On the topic, My son's first langauge is English.. coz his tongue couldnt get Gujarati... English is easy on tongue. His 2nd language will be Gujarati. 😃

I am not from south still :

1. First of all why anyone should accept any language imposed on them as national language which is no way related to their own native language and that too they represent population of half of india.

2. When professional life , business everything require mostly English then what is wrong if we have two official language and leave people themselves to decide.

3. Do you support lets say make Tamil as national language. Learn your mother tongue, learn Tamil as national language and learn English for professional life.

4. Infact its other way around. Just like in this thread we can witness whoever said they are not in favour of Hindi as national language , they taged as hindi hater, question them why watch bollywood, even question their nationality as if the jagir of nationality first hawk is of few so called representative of advocate of any national language , as if bollywood says only hindi speaker should watch a movie .

5. important question is why so much worry for national language when in india there were only 75% literate which is way below world average. Even 25% cant read or write a singe language and u want to impose people with multilingual. First make 100% literate than try to advocate for two three languages 🤪

I didn't say Hindi means no shit to me. I was simply repeating his words to me. I was answering him by pointing out that it is clear that he thought the National Anthem was in Hindi. Because why would I need to make my own National Anthem even if Hindi means no shit to me.

I don't dislike speaking or listening or watching anything in Hindi. I and others have already said what people have a problem with and why. And the attitudes that I have objected to, all that's said there should explain why it would piss me and others off.

It is the idea behind it. Even Tamil film songs (and Tamil Nadu is often the loudest protester against Hindi) in the past decade have some Hindi added in. It's not as if there is a great hatred towards the language itself. It's the attitude and idea that all Indians MUST learn it which is the point of contention. And in some ways, there is already a system in place which makes it a necessity for certain things, and people accept it enough, but the resentment comes when it's tried to be pushed down even more and further.

Like when people who can just as well communicate in English--when they, despite knowing you are South Indian (in the case of being abroad), or despite them being in South India, are utter assholes and decide to impose Hindi and then complain that "South Indians understand us but refuse respond to Hindi or speak back in Hindi." If you are talking to a South Indian outside of a Hindi-speaking environment, what is this huge need that you have to speak to them in Hindi? It's not just a matter of "sharing an Indian tongue." There's the thought behind it which reeks of Hindi Nationalism which has been displayed within this thread itself. They feel that we SHOULD know and speak Hindi.

This is not just the South. There are other areas of India and South Asia who would feel annoyed when people insist to speak to them in Hindi.

It's ridiculous because Hindi has a great amount of Soft Power. Which is why as I said, even Tamil film songs have included Hindi lines here and there. But that is not enough for people who keep insisting and pointing fingers at South Indians who according to them SHOULD learn Hindi.

My personal opinion is that a country like India which has so many different languages shouldn't have a National language in the first place. Having a Natl; language will impose that language on the states that don't use it...make it compulsory in the curriculum in schools...make it compulsory in all the Govt. offices...I feel that is too much to ask...We have English which is a universally accepted language and works fine for the whole of India...since it is technically a foreign language...no state feels that it has been imposed on them or they have to choose another Indian language over their own...For me language is just a means of communication and I don't associate any pride with it...
