My 2 cents on WOM of some major films in recent times

In this thread I just wanted to make a few points about the WOM (Word of Mouth) of films. I just wanted to say this because I often see people talk about how "crap films" do 200 crore business in India based on star power alone.
For example, Dhoom 3. I've heard many people say that this film did the huge business that it did just because of the hype, the Christmas release, an Aamir Khan film after long time, etc. They say there is no other reason to it. BUT, there is NO WAY a film can collect 285 crores in India with a negative WOM! It's just not possible! If the film had a negative WOM, the film would've crashed at the box office and wouldn't even have touched the 200 crore mark. Also, collecting 60+ crores in the second week is no joke!

People talk about the fact that it was an Aamir Khan film coming after a long time, but where did that factor go for Talaash? It was Aamir Khan's film after 3 years (after 3 Idiots) and it only collected 90+ crores!

Yes, there is no denying that a lot of people hated Dhoom 3. But it was not an outright Negative WOM. It was at least a Mixed WOM, leaning more towards the positive side, in India.

Chennai Express obviously had appreciation too by the audience which is why it also did 200+ crore lifetime business.

Now, looking at films that had Negative WOM, see Besharam and Ra One. Besharam's opening day collection was just about 10 crores less than Dhoom 3's Hindi version, and yet Besharam finished with lifetime of just 55 crores!

Look at Ra One. Huge hype and holidays helped the film get to 116 crores, but due to Negative WOM, it didn't get anywhere near the biggest grosser ever at the time (3 Idiots which did 202 crores).

Singham Returns didn't have Negative WOM. If it did, it wouldn't have touched the 140 crore mark. But yes, we can't deny that the WOM was far from great, as the film could've done 200 crore lifetime with the kind of opening it got. The fact that Ajay Devgan has comparatively less star power compared to some of the other superstars also limited the film's lifetime collection potential, because even if WOM is positive, a section of audience would still not want to see the film because of it starring Ajay, which probably played a part in not-good box office trending.

That brings me to Bang Bang. There is talk of film carrying Negative WOM, but that can only be seen by how the film trends at the box office in days to come. If it truly is negative WOM, it will show huge drops. If it is at least Mixed WOM, the film will be a major box office winner!

Again, these are just my 2 cents on the topic. Feel free to agree or disagree!

i agree completely.
Dont know wat will happen with BB but if the movie is even little bit entairtaining then it will at least be a blockbuster if not ATBB.

one has to understand, indian ppl like watching masala entertainmentswith good looking actors. They are not going to movies to learn theaters or drama. All they want is paisaa vasool entertainer. BB has everything to become a huge hit. HIT music, great hype, action, good looking cast..the only way this movie will flop is if it really really badly made.

Correct Sajid Khan may be annoying and a asshat but he said it best when he said
"A truly hated film will crash on Monday or even Sunday . But if it sustains then it has found its audience and it is a well liked film"

Whether Bang Bang or Haider are good films is subjective . But according to the numbers they are well liked so far that is 😉😉. We will see what happens in the next few days

I agree. I personally found Bang Bang very entertaining. But then I didn't take any intellectual standards with me when I started watching it. I feel that often times, people try to enforce unnecessary intellectual criteria (or logic, as the popular word is) when watching a movie. C'mon, how intellectual is "Gandhigiri" in that 2nd Munna Bhai movie?

I feel there is a big gap between the critics and the "mass". See, all the audience wants is a good time. They work hard and want to spend their money on something that entertains/stimulates them every month/two weeks. An ordinary member of the audience is not a "film buff", and after a week of hard work, does not give a damn about whether or not the logic was there in the movie. All he/she cares about is the overall impression. This the what the critics and other pseudo intellectuals don't understand: the expectations of a common movie-goer.

Yup Sajid Khan is right! While on the topic about him, majority on this forum may hate all his films, but the fact that Hey Baby, Housefull, and Housefull 2 all did well shows that the audience used to appreciate his films. Only Himmatwala and Humshakals had Negative WOM.

And forgot to add one thing about Dhoom 3. If the WOM was more positive, it would've crossed the 300 crore mark in India instead of stopping at 285 crores. Overall, the WOM was Mixed, leaning more towards positive.

Queen had excellent word of mouth this year. Even EV, Holiday and 2 States to some extent.

Singham Returns did well in first week but crashed after that. 85% of business was in the first week itself. I don't call that good word of mouth.

@Franco Hey Baby is good. Housefull 2 is decent. I didn't like Housefull when I watched it first time. Himmatwala was not good. Call me crazy, but I enjoyed Humshakals! The film had good comedy in my opinion. The scene where Ritesh and Saif are on the ceiling and Ritesh is trying to control his pee 🤣 and when Esha Gupta says that in some cases of OCD the patient washes his hands with soap so much that his hands start to bleed 🤣.

@Zah.Of.RoZaNa I think that Singham Returns had atleast decent WOM. Not great but not bad either. And I think EK Villain WOM was positive but it lacked repeat value for a lot of people and that's why it didn't have excellent box office trending.
