Sholay is an entertainer. And in its genre it is the best. Each character is memorable. I am not even from that generation yet I know what craze this film is. It is not hype.
Silent romance between Amitabh and Jaya is sweet (I singled it out only because such silent communication is rare in Hindi films and TV). Even kids know dialogues of every character be it Thakur, Veeru, Gabbar or Imam chacha (itna sannata kyun hai bhai?).
It does not matter what critics think. They called HAHK also a wedding video.
Point is these films are just meant to entertain. One is vigilante justice and another might be romance cum family drama.
Piece of trash are films like Tahelka that have nothing memorable or entertaining about them.
Sholay is fine for commercial cinema. It is not meant for critics.
Honestly if someone like Shyam Benegal talked on Sholay then it would be credible also since he has strict standards of work he does and never compromised on them.
But if it comes from a man who did Tahelka, Jalwa, Police Public, Jackpot etc then it is nothing but case of sour grapes.
