The worlds of Royals' and Misfits' come together in Khoobsurat

Although inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1980 hit, director Shashanka Ghosh is said to have treated Khoobsurat like a modern day fairy tale " with his heroine, a physiotherapist falling in love with a prince.

Says Shashanka, "The central thought is about the values that a family upholds. So in that sense, our movie is a family entertainer."What happens when aam people get together with the royals, who treat them as 'misfits'? Meet the fascinating families as they work around their extreme differences and make you laugh, cry and fall in love.


The 'Misfits' Mili Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor) Sugar, spice and all things nice According to the makers, Mili is the quintessential Disney girl " she's eternally optimistic, adventurous and always out to make the world a better place. A physiotherapist by profession, she gets emotionally engaged in the recovery of her patients. Mili has a quirky sense of style governed by her moods, but always turns up looking her gorgeous self.Says Sonam, "What I love about Mili is that she is unapologetically herself and never tries to fit in; she has her own way of handling situations and is not afraid to make mistakes. Whatever she wears, feels or does " ultimately, she is 'khoobsurat'."

Manju Chakravarty (Kirron Kher) A mother and a friend Loving and outspoken, Manju is an enthusiastic mother, who is actively involved in Mili's life through video chats every day. The fact that her daughter calls her by name is a giveaway to their friendly relationship. A die-hard romantic, Manju is a firm believer in happy endings and hopes that Mili meets her Prince Charming someday.

Chakri Chakravarty (Pratik Chakravarty) The level-headed husband A talented musician, Mili's father is the rational partner in his marriage to Manju and his equation with her is an inspiration to Mili, who believes in equality in a relationship. He is liberal and forward-thinking and encourages his family members to be the same.



The Royalty Vikram Singh Rathore (Fawad Khan) The brooding modern-day Prince Sophisticated, responsible and handsome, Vikram Singh Rathore is a Rajput prince, who has grown up to believe that the 'proper thing' needs to be done at the 'proper time'. Besides being conservative and diplomatic, he also seems to have a sense of entitlement and a sarcastic sense of humour. He maintains a reserved distance when with family. And yes, he can be quite a ladies' man.Says Fawad,"Vikram is a straight-forward man of few words with a regimental approach. There's a gradual change in his demeanour with the entry of the vibrant Mili."

Nirmala Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak Shah)The strict matriarch Fearfully referred to as Rani-sa, wife of Prince Shekhar Rathore, Nirmala Devi is a staunch matriarch with an eye for perfection and an intimidating iciness, reflective of the royal legacy of the Rathore family. Interestingly, Rani-sa was jovial and witty at one time " before she became poised and disciplined, shaped by the tough experiences of her life.

Shekhar Singh Rathore (Aamir Raza Husain) The XI Raja of Sambalgarh A blue-blood aristocrat, Shekhar Singh Rathore (Vikram's father), grew up at a time when Rajas were still royalty. Presently, he's a subdued version of his former self. Mili enters the royal home as his physiotherapist and does what no one has done before. Come Friday and we will know how she charms the royal family. Khoobsurat, produced by Walt Disney Pictures in association with Anil Kapoor Film Company, releases worldwide September 19.
