Could Ranveer have done Barfi? Yes. He was very restrained in Lootera. All he has to do is take it down a notch for something like Barfi. Having said that, Ranbir would still make a better Barfi than Ranveer in the hypothetical world if both had to do it. The reason? Ranbir's face has that innocence. Similarly, Ranbir could be Ram of Ram Leela, sure, but he wouldn't have that swag that Ranveer brought to the table. The reason? Ranbir's demeanor is too refined to pull of tapori-esque type of roles.

Both have their strengths and having watching both their movies, I can see them interchange roles. It's not as far fetched as either fandom make it out to be. It's just that their real life personalities is very contrasting so people have a very hard time removing that and seeing them as just performers.
