by Box Office India (August 15, 2014)

Blockbuster duo Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn is back with Singham Returns, the second installment of the hugely successful film Singham, and, as expected from the first trailer, the film opened with 95 per cent occupancy all over India. Since today is the Independence Day holiday, the film will enjoy a four-day weekend thanks to Monday being a holiday for Janmashtami in many parts of India. Distributors believe this film will smash many records at the ticket counter as they believe cine-goers will re-visit cinemas to watch the film. Over to them:

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines

Singham Returns opened at 95 per cent all over India and in Mumbai. The response has been too good in both single-screens and multiplexes. It's a four-day weekend, so without a doubt the film will do tremendous business at the ticket counter. It's a film the audience will watch twice.

Brijesh Tandon, HK Tandon and Company, Delhi-UP

Advance booking started last evening and tickets for the morning and afternoon shows today were sold out. The morning shows saw 90-per cent occupancy and the afternoon show will definitely see 100-per cent occupancy. Word-of-mouth is very strong.

Jaspal Dhingra, Nanaskar Enterprises, East Punjab

Singham was a superhit and the audience was waiting for its sequel. The very first trailer suggested that the film would be a blockbuster and Rohit Shetty has made this film with ease. Every scene is brilliant. Advance booking for the night shows has already begun. There is no doubt that the film will run to packed houses till Monday.

Gaurrav Gaur, O'Real Imagination, Rajasthan

Ajay Devgn is known as an action star and Rohit Shetty is known to make action films. With Singham Returns, they took their partnership to a new level. The film opened with 80-per cent occupancy and we are running house-full shows in most single-screens and multiplexes.

Debashish Dey, Aum Moviez, West Bengal

The film opened with 90-per cent occupancy and it will break many records. Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn's last film Singham had also set many records but it seems they will set a new benchmark this time, as advance booking for Sunday's shows has also opened.

Jeetu Khandelwal, Pioneer Movies, Orissa

Singham Returns opened to 80-per cent occupancy in our circuits and the film will see massive footfalls during the weekend as there is a four-day weekend till Monday. Collections will be humungous.

Sarang Chandak, Shri Rang Films, CP

The film opened with 85-90 per cent occupancy in our circuit and the response in single-screens as well as in multiplexes is the same. The film has all the right elements, from action to a social message and comedy.

'Singham Returns' movie review: Ajay Devgn saves our white money!

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Singham Returns. White money wasted is no less a loss than black money hoarded. Much though I would love to see the collective arse-busting of black money hoarders on screen by a beefy, doughty hero, I wouldn't do it at the peril of my white money being wasted on a loud, clichd, predictable film with eardrum shattering background score and unimaginative direction.

But lord bless Ajay Devgn! Like in the film, he comes to the rescue and saves director Rohit Shetty's blushes and tax-paying janta's white money with his plucky act.

Singham Returns has Devgn slipping again into the hip-hugging khakis of the courageous cop Bajirao Singham. Only this time, he's the Mumbai DCP taking on the might of a creepy Godman (Amole Gupte) and corrupt politician (Zakir Hussain). The story takes off when a police constable's dead body is found with crores of cash. While accusatory fingers point at the venality of the cops, Bajirao Singham plans to dig deep and he unearths a trail of black money leading to the godman. The cash is to be used to buy votes for the corrupt neta in cahoots with the godman.

Bajirao Singham isn't the only one raining on the parade of this evil duo. An idealist teacher and social crusader Guruji (Anupam Kher) spearheads a movement to field honest, young candidates (sans any tendency to sit on dharnas, I hope) in the elections.

So as the battle-line is drawn, our hero Bajirao Singham not only fights the baddies wielding rocket launchers and assault rifles, he also damns the tyrannical system that suits the bad guys more than the cops.

'Singham Returns' is a salute to the power of Khaki. Cops with dresses and demeanour as neat as their conscience command our attention. In one scene, they take to the road in squeaky clean white vests to (not advertise a new detergent but) display their power and unity.

Kareena Kapoor is more or less relegated to the sidelines as the chirpy, vivacious, feisty Avni, who even rides an autorickshaw in a sequence.

The real shocker comes from director Rohit Shetty. He shows uncharacteristic restraint on many counts: 1. He takes ages to blow up the first car. 2. He makes Ajay Devgn strip and take the expected dip in the pond not until the second half. 3. He doesn't make the hero spout the catch-line Aata Majhi Satakli' more than 3-4 times. That's admirable.

What Shetty spares us on one front, he assaults us with on the other. Once the cars start exploding, there's no let up. Gratuitous violence is as much foisted on us as the romantic track between Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor. A few actions sequences do hit the mark and will be greeted with wolf whistles. The credit goes as much to Shetty as to Ajay Devgn, who, with his seething intensity and fiery eyes, makes Bajirao Singham roar again on the big screen.

If you must, watch Singham Returns for Ajay Devgn.

Rating: ***

The much-awaited SINGHAM RETURNS, which brings the unbeatable Rohit Shetty - Ajay Devgn combination together, had a thunderous start across single screens and a solid start at multiplexes. 15 August being a national holiday, the film is expected to witness strong footfalls across cineplexes all through the day and there's a strong possibility that it could emerge not just Ajay's highest opener, but also Ajay's highest grosser too.

The advance booking of SINGHAM RETURNS was more than encouraging in several circuits and going by trends, the film should pack a solid total on Day 1 and also over the weekend.

Just back from Singham Returns .Must say this is a rock solid action entertainer that hits all the right notes .The film is an extremely fast paced ride with so many things happening that its impossible to keep your eyes off screen .The biggest highlights here are the action scenes which are vibrant and pulse pounding .A definite treat for all the action lovers .If you liked Singham ,you would love this one .I feel this one is better than the first Singham.Rohit Shetty delivers yet again .

I was hooked from the very first scene .Especially Amol Guptre's introduction scene is hilarious .Although the story has been done to death ,the film still managed to hold my attention .There is seldom a boring moment and the action scenes are absolutely mind blowing .And the best part is they look so real with no flying around ..The film follows the same trajectory as Singham but the deja vu factor did not come in my of enjoying the movie for it is really well made .The dialogues are clap worthy with so many gems.

On the flip side feel the music is listless .The songs are absolutely unbearable. The production values also could have been better .Some scenes appear tacky especially those in 'Chawl'.Also the film gets bit repetitive in the second with identical action sequences .For instance the first shootout (involving Anupam Kher) was great but the second shootout in bridge did not have the desired impact as it looked too similar to the first.

Ajay does very well.He is superb and packs a solid punch .He absolutely looks the part.Kareena does not have a role .She appears here and there but disappears completely in the last 30minutes .Her comic scenes are a mixed bag .The one in rickshaw was cringe worthy while the another one involving mistaken identities was funny .Amol Gupte is not as menacing as Prakash Raj in the original .Daya from CID is good .

Overall ,a complete Masala entertainer that actually surpassed my expectations .One of the better films of Rohit Shetty .
