Question for you south people do you all speak hindi fluently?

Why do some south people speak hindi and some don't? isn't hindi the primary language in schools?

Not all South people can speak Hindi fluently, but people from cities like Hyderabad has major muslim influence.

Also when we were in school we had Hindi as part of first and second language. So one will be definitely exposed to the subject. Also I don't think this is the case, in lets say, a state like Tamil Nadu (as per my knowledge, not sure if its different now).

Its mostly the language spoken in that state that's primary language in pretty much every state, I think.

So you get to pick if you want to study Hindi in school? I always just assumed since Hindi is the first language in India, all schools are taught in Hindi

Sorry, I don't know much about india, all I know is from bollywood and a few Indians I have met IRL who are more American than indian tbh.

Each state has a state board education and there are Central board schools(CBSE) ,then there ICSE/ISC. In state board the state language is usually the first language. Or English. N maybe in 5th or 6th grade they teach Hindi as 3rd language,till 8th grade I guess. So usually ppl learn it for 3-4 yrs like students learn Spanish in US.

In central board Hindi is compulsory second language,English being first(or other way round sometimes).N they teach Hindi since grade 1. Once you reach 5th grade or so usually you can choose your 3rd language ie Sanskrit or French or state language.

First language is the one in which all the syllabus/medium of teaching is. 2nd language is the one which we study along with English from grade 1. 3rd language is one we start studying once we reach 5th or 6th grade.

In Tamil Nadu Hindi channels and Hindi language in school was banned I think for sometime. Most of the South region doesn't really understand Hindi. Ppl in major cities like Bangalore,Hyderabad, Chennai are better at Hindi cos of movies I guess and in general the cities are cosmopolitan.
