Fawad Afzal Khan (Urdu: ) (pronounced [Fawd Af"al Khn]; born 29 November 1981) is a Pakistani singer, model and actor. Khan has received two Lux Style Awards, and has established himself as one of Pakistan's highest-paid actor.[1]
After making his acting debut in the 2000 comedy drama Jutt and Bond. Khan rose to prominence playing the role of Hassan in 2010 serial Dastaan. Khan established himself as a leading actor of Pakistani television in 2011 with roles in the blockbuster melodrama Humsafar. He achieved further success for his leading role in the 2013 romantic drama Zindagi Gulzar Hai, all of which rank among the highest rated Pakistani serial.
Khan made his film debut in 2007 with Khuda Kay Liye which was the highest-grossing Pakistani film of 2007. His performance in the film garnered critical appreciation and earned him the Lux Style Award for Best Actor. In 2013, Khan appeared in Armaan, a romantic drama that proved to be a critical and commercial success. Khan was widely praised for his role which earned him a nomination at Tarang Housefull Award for Best Actor.
Khan was first known for being the lead singer of Pakistani rock band Entity Paradigm, but the band split up. His songs "Shor Macha and "Rahguzar" did well in the charts, and was considered a critical and commercial success.
Fawad Afzal Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan.[2] He spent his early life in Greece,[3]Saudi Arabia and in United Kingdom[3] and returned to Lahore when he was 12. He completed his A-levels from Lahore Grammar School. Later he joined National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences, Lahore for his Bachelors. Where he obtained a degree in Telecom Engineering. He made his first public appearance in a high school play. Fawad's performance in the play was so good that Anjum Shahzad (director) got impressed and encouraged Fawad to perform on TV as well. He learned guitar, bass, and drums at the age of 20.[3]
Khan started his modeling career at the age of thirteen. Khan waled on ramp alongwith Mahira Khan at the India Bridal Fashion Week and the PFDC L'Oral Paris Bridal Week Day.[4] Khan has appeared in a number of commercials including, Servis Shoes, Mobilink, QMobile, TUC Biscuit and Clean & Clear Shampoo. Khan owns a brand called Silk which is his collaboration with his wife. The brand was launched on August 18, 2012.[5]
Khan began his singing career with Pakistani rock band Entity Paradigm as a lead singer. Khan released his first album Irtiqa in 2003, which earned wide critical recognition.
In year 2010 Fawad's band, Entity Paradigm,[6] reunited and performed Bolo Bolo in Season 3 of the popular television music series Coke Studio. Later in the year EP also released their breakthrough album "Shor Macha" in which the title track, with a strong patriotic message, became relatively more popular. Khan, at the launch of the album, commented on the track, "The message is for people to stop complaining and start acting".[7]
Later on, Khan came up with the popular romantic track "Rahguzar" from Irtiqa, produced by Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, was a critical acclaim in Pakistan. The song also received good reviews by Ultimate-guitar,Express Tribune and VH1 Pakistan.[8]
Khan also produced the songs "Waqt", "Kahan Hai Tu" and "Hamein Aazma" for the album Irtiqa met with immense commercial appreciation. The song remained on the top of the charts for many weeks and became hugely popular in dance clubs. In 2007, Khan left the band, due to earning much popularity as an actor, then as a singer.
In 2000, Khan made his screen debut at the age of 19 in the serial Jutt and Bond, aired on Indus Vision. He played the role of Bumbling spy boy, which also starred his friend and co-band member, Ahmed Ali Butt.[9]
In year 2008, Khan appeared in Anjum Shehzad's travel and adventure drama series Satrangi. Khan portrayed the role of an engineering student who hires a mini-bus and takes his six friend to a trip around the country.[10]
In 2010, Khan landed the lead role of Hassan, in Haissam Hussain's Dastaan, based on Razia Butt's novel "Bano", aired on Hum TV.
He achieved further critical and commercial success for his role of Ashar Hussain, a wealthy man who marries with his middle-class girl cousin and gives birth to new rivalry, in the 2011 TV serial Humsafar (based on Farhat Ishtiaq's novel of the same name) opposite Mahira Khan, which received Pakistan's highest rating ever, at 9.75 and proved him biggest role yet making him a famous actor across the country. His acting was very much well praised in Humsafar along with hiss chemistry with her co-star Mahira Khan.[11][12][13]
From 2013 onwards he played the role of Rohail in Geo TV serial Ashk opposite Neelam Muneer and Mehreen Raheel and in another serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai aired on Hum TV, in which he played the role of Zaroon opposite Sanam Saeed.
Khan made his film debut with a leading role in the 2007 Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye, which was the highest-grossing Pakistani film of 2007. Khan played the Sarmad the best singers in Lahore, but later influenced by an Islamic activist and begins to practice the extremist interpretation of Islam, grows a beard and goes against music, putting pressure on his free-spirited family to comply. Those parties interpret certain verses of the Quran and Hadith to call for a ban on music and pictures. The role was first offered to Ali Zafar but due to busy schedule, Ali refused.[3]
In 2013, Khan appeared in Abdullah Kadwani's film Armaan, remake of Waheed Murad's 1966 film of the same name. Khan went on to win Tarang Housefull Award for Best on screen Couple with Aamina Sheikhand was nominated for Tarang Housefull Award for Best Actor.
As of September 2013, Khan has several projects at various stages of production. Khan has completed shooting of Summer Nicks's Science fiction Kolachi, and his first international project, a Bollywood filmKhoobsurat remake of the 1980 film of the same name opposite Sonam Kapoor, which is produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Boney Kapoor.[14] Khan has also signed his second Bollywood film Yash Raj Films Next alongside actress Kareena Kapoor,[15] and third Pakistani film Sultana Siddiqui's Next film, that will be shot in Lahore towards the mid of 2014.[16]
Fawad met Sadaf Fawad in 1998 at the age of 17, and married her in an Islamic wedding ceremony at Lahore in 2005. The couple has a son named Ayaan Khan.[17]
