I would have said Sonu Nigam, who was my favourite till some time back but I've begun to despise all the harkatein he does to songs and the elongation that takes away from the quality. Udit keeps it simple and effective. Kumar Sanu is such an arse that it kinda seeps into my opinion of him as a singer. Even if I don't factor his bitter personality, I'd still say he was just a fad in the 90's when competition was scarce. I like some of his pop songs, the buck stops there.
The thing is kumar sanu have sang similar kind of stuff thorugh out his 1990 to 1995 peak time ...typical Nadeem Shravan songs which were the copied of Old Pakistani Songs... ...he never had any variety which Sonu started giving in late 90's only like Satrange Re, Yeh Dil Dewana or romantic Ballad like Mujhe Raat Din Bas Mujhe Chahate Ho den early 2000 and so on ...Sonu have did Pop , Classical , Bhajhan , Semi Classical, Sad , Romantic, Hi range songs , Low range songs, Qawali, Ghazals ...u can not judge someone just by the number of songs ...judge a singer by the capabilities he have ...kumar sanu had limited singing skills and range ...he easily fade out from the scene in early 2000 when Sonu Nigam was on Peak...while Udit Narayan was good for normal playback singing he was also less skilled in classical his plus point was his Smiling voice but he was a crooner...as a singer who is really capable enough to be in same league of Muhammad Rafi is only Sonu Nigam because of his diverse work ... The range the variety Rafi Sahab have given should be a benchmark to be a singer of that level
