Movie Review : 2 States

While reading Chetan Bhagat's '2 States' the only thing that kept striking my mind was the fact that this book would someday be adapted into another masala movie which we would waste our money on. Even though I was not exactly pleased with the dramatic book, I somehow lasted till the end.

For all those who have read the novel, the movie is pretty much the same. Right from the IIM setting to the chai-cutting the two couple share - the plot is a downright adaptation of the book. The only change is that a hefty Krish Malhotra (who is Chetan Bhagat himself) is replaced by a well toned Arjun Kapoor whose personality is brought down by his geeky glasses. Really! Couldn't the makers be a bit more convincing?

For those who haven't read the story '2 States' is about Krish Malhotra, an aspiring writer who studies at IIM-Ahmedabad. Luckily, he meets the only hot and gori' Tamilian Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) while she is fighting over a bad sambhar' in the campus canteen. They develop a nice little friendship over studies and chicken. The guy tries to apply the avoid-the-girl' phenomenon which makes them fall in love, eventually. But in a country like India when you decide to love and marry a girl you need to marry her family as well. There begins the problem. Krish's incredibly loud Punjabi mother won't accept the Tamilian Ananya with her insipid family of three and vice versa.

I remember hating Chetan Bhagat's Three Mistakes of my Life' but what Abhishek Kapoor did to the film was absolutely applause worthy. Not only did the film surpass the book by miles but it was also one of the best films that came out last year. I wanted something similar to happen with this film. With a talented filmmaker 2 States' could have been a classic rom-com drama if not much. But Abhishek Varman's screenplay and direction makes the film lesser fun and overly melodramatic. It is something that can only be liked by people who go to cinemas after a decade or so.

The film is not bad. It will please a handful of people, especially those who like films with a North vs South premise, and that of a protagonist who suffers from an alcoholic-father issue. But the healthy premise is killed by a lack of glued screenplay. The movie tries but never comes out of the usual ladai-jhadga, petty jokes and over-simplistic dialogues that are intended to come out as amazing but fuses like a bad Diwali cracker.

The social issues, melodramatic fights and disagreements dominate the latter half of the film to such an extent that the romance between the lead pair never seems to be convincing. The key scenes of the book which should have made the film a better watch fail to ignite any kind of emotion.

The film heavily weighs on the director's creativity and he doesn't manage to bring out a strong performance from Alia Bhatt who has proved what she is capable of in her previous film. Arjun Kapoor performs well but only in parts, he neither manages to play a puppy-eyed lover well, nor manages to do justice to the role of a son who is suffering from daddy issues. Shiv Kumar and Revathy as the South Indian parents are effective and subtle, but are again stereotypical in every sense. Amrita Singh as the loud mother is pleasant enough while the only saving grace of the film is the ever so angry drunken father played by Ronit Roy though it maybe because he plays the same character for the second or third time (the first being Udaan). The music is good but the songs do no good to the already lengthy melodramatic drama.

Final Verdict: The protagonist in the film at a point exclaims: Kahaani main hero ho na ho, kahaani hero honi chaiye.' I wish there was something hero-fic in the movie. Sadly there isn't much to cheer for!

2 States: Movie Review

2 States
film is based on the famous bestseller written by Chetan Bhagat '2 States: The Story Of My Marriage'. The film is set in the present age where Arjun Kapoor plays a North Indian boy and Alia Bhatt a South Indian girl.

2 States is about the typical boy meets girl story and falling in love with her. How much ever liberal their thinking is and independent they are, they want their parents to approve their love. Both are very much in love with each other but still cannot go against their parents' wishes and get married. What is the reason? Why their parents want the kids to do well in life but still cannot accept a partner out of their community.

The concept is not at all new to Bollywood. Starting from Ek Duuje Ke Liye till recently to Vicky Donor, there have been enough and more films about inter-caste marriages and relationships. Why is it that we are still not board-minded when it comes to marriage and love?

2 States is directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala. First choice for the film was Shahrukh And Asin Thottumkal and later Ranbir and Saif Ali Khan were approached. Finally, it was Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt who made it. Amrita Singh and Ronit Roy play as Arjun Kapoor's parents while, Revathy and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam as Alia's Parents.

The film attempts to portray the answer for the various questions that crosses the minds of both the lovers and their respective families. The lovers decide to persuade their families instead of rebelling and succeeds in their attempt too. 2 States attempts to convey the audience to break the pre-conceived notions about inter caste marriages.

The story goes like this..

Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) meet in IIM-Ahmedabad and falls in love. They decide to get married but not until their parents agree. Complications arise when they decide to get married especially when both are from different states of India. Krish is a North Indian Punjabi boy from Delhi, while Ananya is a Tamil Brahmin girl from Chennai.

The film goes on with parents oppposing and cultural clashes which keeps the audience entertained. To make their love blossom into a marriage the couple fights harder in their battle. For, it is always easy to rebel than to convince. Will Krish and Ananya's love win their parents hearts as well? Will they end as a happily married couple?

Abhishek Varman has done total justice to Chetan Bhagat's book and delightfully taken it. With the soundtrack incredibly gelling with the film, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done wonderful work. 2 States is a total entertainer and a sure shot Bollywood box office hit!

2 States movie review: Watch it, not just once, but twice

2 States movie review: Watch it, not just once, but twice
FONT SIZE

2 States is a classic example of the problems evoking prior the marital life of a couple from two different cultures. Abhishek Verman deserves applause for understanding the usual yet non-described feelings and mindsets of two different castes and narrating it with ease.

Stars- Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh, Ronit Roy, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy
Director- Abhishek Varman
Music Director- Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Though, it is not the first occasion that we are witnessing any inter-caste love story onscreen but here we have a twist in the love story which begins in IIM-Ahmedabad.

Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) is a Punjabi guy from Delhi while Ananya Swaminathan, is a pure Tamilian from Chennai.

From studying together to getting romantically involved, the two finally fall in love. Both are now well-settled in their respective jobs and so its time to get married. But like every love story it isn't a cakewalk. The two decide to approach each other's family and convince them. Moreover, they also have to make their family love the other party's family.

Now how the cultural differences, the likings and the state of minds of the two families clash before accepting each other, is the story Abhishek Varman efficiently narrates in this Chetan Bhagat's book '2 States' adaptation.

He brings out the varied emotions from his characters which are mirror image of today's families and couples. Starting from Karan Johar's trademark college romance, the flick initially peeks into the colourful campus, libraries and a lot of books there. You aren't saved from the typical dance troops but we allow them to enjoy the least cinematic liberty.

But the core of the flick, which is the real test of the director and his actors, comes at forth when they decide to convince each other's families. Abhishek Varman inhales the feelings of the story from the book which is a true tale of author Chetan Bhagat. What diversifies it from the other love stories is the tackling of the situations coming at fore. Here our lovebirds aren't desperate to go against their and each other's families for nuptials but is mature enough to make them love and respect each other's tradition and cultures.

Abhishek brings out the simplest yet important notions of the two varied castes before they finally agree to the marriage. It's not a lecture poking you in those 150 minutes runtime but is a moral arising with slapstick humour.

There are instances where the two families take a dig at each other's standard of living. While Krish's mom Kavita (Amrita Singh) presents and produces most of the Punjabi witty fun, Ananya's mom and dad (played by Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy respectively) present disciplined Madras.

Yet the sensitivity, which Abhishek carries while presenting the two different states is admirable. The chemistry he brings out from the lead in catchy. Alia and Arjun aren't just wild as portrayed in the most of the promotions but it's their understanding which fetches our focus.

Among the two, it's Arjun's performance which surprises us in a big way. He isn't same aggressive actor which we have seen in his earlier flicks but is feasibly calm, composed and shows a lot of patience in his act.

Alia is once again brilliant in her act. She carries the emotions with ease and her expression speaks more than her words.

We must say that the supporting cast is the backbone of this flick. Amrita Sigh is brilliant as a chirpy mother. Ronit Roy, who is a strict father of Arjun Kapoor, once again shows the self-control in his act.

Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy bring out a good father-mother performance.

Shakar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is delightful. While all the songs look beautiful onscreen, the background score touches your heart with each scene.

Like it's about two dissimilar families we would recommend you to watch this flick twice. Once with friends while the other time with your family!

If it's actually a good film, then why were the promotions focused so much on kissing? When you have a good product, why not focus a little more on selling the actual story to people?

2 States

Meena Iyer, TNN, Apr 17, 2014, 01.21PM IST

Critic's Rating:
Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh, Revathi, Ronit Roy
Direction: Abhishek Varman
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 29 minutes

Story: Punjabi boy and Tamilian girl discover love on their college campus. However, their diverse cultures make its culmination a challenge.

Review: For an audience that has been around from the '80s, debutant Abhishek Varman's '2 States' may seem like they are revisiting K Balachander's mega hit 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye' (1981), where the Tamil boy had to cross endless hurdles to patao the Punjabi girl. However, that movie had too much angst and a tragic end.

2 States is a happy film (with measured anguish). Romance in cross-cultural or even cross-border situations isn't new to Bollywood. What makes 2 States work is the simple narrative told humorously. Adapted as it is, from one of author Chetan Bhagat's best-selling works, the film, just like the book before it, is light-hearted. Chetan's funny one-liners and life-view are studiously borrowed by the director for his screen outing. And though there is a sense of deja-vu, for those who have read the book, the movie still manages to charm and surprise.

Krish Malhotra (Arjun) and Ananya Swaminathan(Alia) meet on the IIM Ahmedabad campus. Sparks fly between economic coaching and food poaching. Their tender love, compulsive copulation and kissing chemistry (adeptly portrayed by the young screen lovers) make this couple reason that they could spend a lifetime together. But in India, where tradition and parents are nurtured, couples have to literally marry each other's families.

Incidentally, for those in an inter-caste marriage, this movie could resonate like your own tale. The playful digs at each other's cultures, the self-deprecating remarks about one's family and community are all laugh-out-loud moments. Amrita-Ronit, Revathi-Shiv Subramaniam infuse life into their roles of the Punjabi and Tamil parents. The spitfire Alia and a sober Arjun are also lovable. If you are in a mood for a Bollywood family saga with measured melodrama and the right amount of naach-gaana, visit 2 States.
