Reading scripts, scripts and more scripts!
Are you being very selective about your work?
I've always been selective about my work. I don't know how to function any other way.
What kind of projects would you like to be part of? Any directors on the wish-list?
I like films that are edgy, provocative, non-formula and original. No wish list as such but it would be nice to collaborate with some of the directors I have worked with in the past.
With 'One by Two' you turned producer. But that didn't do too well at the box office. What was the learning lesson here?
I tried to keep the genre as commercial as I could, along with mixing in elements that would perhaps not be considered commercial. Maybe that made the film neither here nor there. Many people told me that when I am in a film they expect it to be against the norm, edgy, provocative, risky. All the things I like to see in a movie with myself in it. In a way it is a positive feed back. It means I should take risks. Ironically when talking to a funder they don't want any risk. I have come this far by taking risks. Besides this, I have learnt much more about the business, production, distribution, audience perception etc. I am better prepared to produce today than ever before.
News of you going bankrupt is doing the rounds. Can you once and for all clarify this matter?
That article was a complete lie. I'd like them to prove a word of what they wrote. I believe there are two kinds of journalists. One who sells a story by being creative, and one who sells a story by being sensationalist. I understand why people go either way. What was shocking was the extent to which they fabricated things to sensationalize their story. They even tricked me into giving them a quote. A few journalists within that paper are giving it a bad name. On the phones, the journalist who had called me for my quote even apologized to me, passing the buck onto the other journalist. How convenient. Even the editor was upset. But did they acknowledge it in public? Of course not. I guess to do so might open up a pandora's box and they would probably be apologizing to multiple celebrities every day.
You have often been admired for your suave fashion sense. What's your take on fashion?
It starts with the personality. If you perceive someone to be stylish then even if they are shabbily dressed you would consider that as a new style statement. If you perceive someone as scruffy then even if they were dressed in a suit you would see them as trying too hard to look neat. What's important is to find out who you are and the fashion will follow. I like subtlety, blending in as opposed to screaming out 'look at me' with the way I dress.
When will you be waking the aisle with girlfriend, Preeti Desai?
We just walked down the aisle yesterday! On the flight back from Goa.
What does a typical day look like in the life of Abhay Deol?
Early morning breakfast, late morning gym followed by lunch at home. In the afternoon I have my meetings. Am back home by the evening, and have an early dinner. I read scripts through the day as and when I get time in between meetings.
What is it like when you meet up with brothers Sunny and Bobby. What do you guys do talk about ?
We have wrestling matches and loser pays for dinner. If he has the strength to get up, that is.
What's next for Abhay?
I have just said yes to three scripts. There are two more in the pipeline but it's the three I have signed so far. I am really excited with all of them, it's been a while since I shot multiple films back to back so I am really looking forward to it. I'm also looking at scripts as a producer. All in all, I am really happy to be able to do both things for now.
