Again..she never said Who is he. That sounds rude. She just said she didn't know him and never met him. There's a difference.

The title is obv to create headlines. Judging from this topic..it's working.

and as for regional movies, shes starred in quite a few south remakes herself, so i dunt think shes lying when she says shes watched south cinema...south is encompassed by tamil, telugu, malyalam and kannada...surya works in the tamil film industry, and its possible that she saw mallu films (which was what she was remaking) or tamil films where surya wasnt starring in it...

Tabu learnt Telugu, Aishwarya learnt Tamil and Bengali. They mentioned in interviews that they were still not allowed to dub because there will still be a marked difference in someone who has just learnt the language as opposed to someone who has been speaking the language for 25 years (the character). That is why the directors go for dubbing artistes. They might be from the South but it is of no use because it's not like all the languages of the South are the same. I'm a Telugu and Malayalam and Tamil sound like Greek and Latin to me. Similarly, their mother tongues are also different, so it is not like they have it easy (have to mention here about Aishwarya, a South Indian, working in Bengali cinema and learning the language).

And she might watch some south Indian films that she is remaking, but that's entirely different from having a love for South Indian cinema. There is a clear difference in that. Moreover, the film she is doing now, Singham 2, is actually a sequel of Singham which is a Suriya film.

the quote in the article clearly says

I don't know where such baseless stories come from. I haven't signed any such film. I don't even know who Suriya and Linguswamy are.

They obviously had to make a headline out of it and hence the condescension...

but saying "i dunt know x" isnt equatable to saying "Who is x"

and the last statement is a bit wierd...im from the south and kareena is/was a national star...just like people down the south know abt katrina, deepika, aamir, srk, salman etc...they know abt kareena too...people down the south watch hindi films too and have a big market for them...

Both are more or less the same to me, she just put it mildly, "I don't know who is x", when she very well knows how the media will use her statement (Check the headline). She has been in the game long enough to know that. So I won't give her the benefit of doubt.

And yeah, she's known in the urban places, of course those watching Hindi movies will, but most of the non-urban places, people don't know her. People don't watch Hindi films with as much enthusiasm in the South as they do in other parts of the country.

@first para...exactly...clearly even the directors recognize that there is a language barrier there because acting in a language unfamiliar to you needs such crutches...and a lot of actors arent comfortable with having someone else dub for them...so clearly, language is a barrier as far as acting goes...some people chose to take that crutch which is fine...some people dunt which is also fine...i dunt see how ones choice is somehow superior...

and if she has watched those handful of films she was remaking and liked them, and also worked with south indian directors and technicians, then I see nothing wrong with her proclaiming her admiration for south indian cinema...

and singham 2 isnt a remake of the tamil version of the same...its a different script altogether...as long as she saw the hindi version of the film they were making a sequel to, its not necessary or required for her to watch the original...hence the conflict...

actually no...most rural places and interiors also watch hindi films...therz lots of single screens in the interiors that screen them...i watched dhoom 3 in a place called "pithapuram" and couldnt get the tickets for it for 3 days...

if it stars a big hero like srk, salman or aamir or even hrithik/akshay, even rural areas have a demand for them...which is why their films are also dubbed in telugu/tamil to attract an even larger demographic...like ra.one, krrish, dhoom 3, don 2 etc were...

It is superior because they're gutsy enough to take up a challenge when they could just continue doing films in their comfort zone. For you, this might not seem like something that is commendable. For me it shows their love and passion for cinema, that language is just a superficial barrier that can be broken. And I don't agree dubbing is half the job. Let's not discredit actresses of their pain and hardwork in learning the language. You speak as if they do not learn the nuances at all. They do. And it is hard work! It is impossible to dub well for an actress who hasn't actually delivered the dialogue well (you can notice this in case of Katrina in Mallishwari, where even the lip sync is amiss). For someone who never heard Aishwarya or Tabu speak, they can never tell they were dubbed in Kandukondain Kandukondain. But you can tell Katrina was dubbed even without ever hearing her speak.

And what Kareena does while watching the originals of her own movies (how many has she remade, three or four I guess?). That's what I would call research. Not love for cinema. If it was love, she would have gone further than watching originals of her own movies.

And it isn't required of her to watch Singham 2. I know it's not a remake, but it is the sequel of a film which is a remake of the original Suriya starrer. If she really loves south Indian cinema, she could have wondered how they did it and watched it for curiosity sake, and actually given Rohit some inputs about how something can be improved with their current version.

They're watched in smaller towns also, but very less. South Indian movies dominate everywhere. It is in Andhra that people watch Hindi movies slightly, but if you go further in the South, it just gets lesser and lesser.

Also, I think Dhoom series is the most watched movie in the South, but people here still have no idea of who Uday Chopra is.

i clearly stated that i wasnt discrediting aishwarya or tabu for not working hard so no, i didnt make it sound like they werent...i said its a personal choice if someone wants to take that crutch as an actor or not because at the end of the day, dubbing is half the job which is why national awards dunt nominate actors who dunt dub for themselves...and there are plenty of actors down the south who have voiced discomfort in doing films in a different language since they wont be able to "get it right" as compared to a native...i dunt find that a reason to judge...

plus, i do not think there is any pre-requisite for loving cinema...if i say i love quintein tarantino after watching kill bill, that dosent mean i have to watch all films he directed to justify my love for him...i love hindi films but i havent seen guru dutt's pyaasa, or mughal e azam, or even the recent queen which is iconic/got good reviews for the industry...that dosent mean im faking my love for hindi films...even if what kareena saw was limited work, if she liked it, i dunt see anything wrong with her saying she does...

Umm...therz a difference between someone like uday chopra who has done limited films, has never really been acclaimed as an actor or a star or anything...and someone like kareena who has been a highly successful heroine in the past and has been the face of quite a few shampoo bottles, soaps and hair oils sold in rural areas.

anywayz...i dunt deny there might be people who dunt know her...but my arguments were countering ur point that "most" in the south have "no clue" about her...which i think is quite the exaggeration.

She didn't say anything wrong. She say she don't know who is suriya and swami. That's it. What the big deal out of that. She does not need to know each and every Indian actor.
