Acting matters, script matters, even in a huge HW blockbuster movie about superheros. All the Batmen movie were ridiculous before Dark Knight. Just watch them. Iron Man is not just a man in a superhero suit, it is Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and most especially Tom Hiddleston as Loki are what makes Thor watchable. The special effects and the whole superhero myth while great do not stand a chance without good acting or a good script. If not you have terrible movies like the Fantastic Four.
Even in YA movies not grounded in reality, acting and script matter..That is the difference between a Harry Potter and a Twilight. I apply similar standards as much as I can to BW. So we have to agree to disagree on the importance of acting in fantasy or action movies.
False comparison, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Hopkins , Natalie Portman etc, these are actors, they're not action stars, very important difference, they're just actors playing characters in superhero movies, whilst stunt doubles and special effects take care of the action, in other words, the audience do not go to watch Robert Downey Jr because he's beating people up, they already know that he's not behind that mask. The writing, presentation, acting, script do matter in these superhero/fantasy films, especially since they're based on very popular comic book heroes and popular works of fiction, so doing justice and pleasing the fans is very important for success.
By action, I was referring to action stars like Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa, Jason Statham, Jet Li etc, people who do real action and real stuntwork, these stars are not popular because of their acting, some do a decent job, but that's not what made them famous, it's their action that's made them famous. The difference here is that the audience watch the films for the stars, you go to watch their movies to see them whoop ass, you don't go expecting some great acting performance, if the script is good and acting is good then great, if not, then passable will do, as long as the action delivers, otherwise you're disappointing your target audience.
Tiger doesn't need to be a great actor, not like any of the newbies are great actors, he can improve with time, and clearly he's not eying for that title, I'm pretty sure action is where he'll be concentrating mostly.
