Old article...but I never knew this about her! I was googling on osteoarthritis: which basically means worn/damaged knees/hips/back that hurt badly. My dad got diagnosed with it last week. He has a worn/damaged knee that hurts all the time except when he is cycling. Eventually he took painkillers but they don't seem to help anymore so now he will have to go through surgery 😭 it will be his first surgery 😭 he never had a surgery before 😭 I feel so bad for him. Cuz his knee will now always cause troubles...surgery will only help for a few months...
in case you're thinking: who cares 🤢 well the even more bad news is one day we will all have osteoarthritis once we reach 50+. Some of us won't notice it, but most of us will endure 😭 pain 😭Can it still get worse? Yes it can cuz it can also happen to young people. So even if your 18 or 25 or 37 or 45...:

I had knees of a 65-yr-old: Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu talks about her osteoarthritis and how she is dealing with it

That a journalist called her 'fat' some years ago, which spurred her to embark on a weight reduction spree is well known. However, a lesser known fact is that it is equally Bipasha's osteoarthritis condition, which goes back to 2005, which is to blame for her fitness fetish.

Talking to Mumbai Mirror, the actress recalled the time when she was shooting for Anees Bazmee's No Entry. "I was quite overweight and used to cover myself intelligently so that I didn't end up looking fat. I realised I needed to shed weight," she revealed.

In a tearing hurry to get into shape, Bipasha started running... on roads, the treadmill... without help from a professional trainer. "I had no knowledge about health and fitness and even went on crash diets. Suddenly, I started getting excruciating pain in my knees, with days when I could barely stand. I spoke to Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan and many other colleagues, who recommended some top doctors," the actress said.

She was advised to undergo a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and the reports made her go numb with shock. "They said I was suffering from an extreme condition. My knees had become like that of a 65-year-old person," she remembered. Even more shocking was learning that her condition was extremely rare in youngsters. It made her wonder, "Why did I get it? Where do I go from here?"

One of the doctors told her she wouldn't be able to do any action sequences or even stand for long hours. Another medico advised her bed rest. "I wept for three days and nights at a stretch. My parents were out and I just didn't know what was happening," revealed Bips. On the fourth day though, the actress gathered all her courage and told herself, "It can't be this way, I need to fight it out. You live life only once, don't you?"

That was only the beginning of Bipasha's struggles. She spoke to Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, both fitness freaks. She started reading, buying all sorts of books, surfing the internet for information. It was then that she met sports physiotherapist Himakshi Basu, who assured her she would be able to do most of the things sooner or later except that patience was key. The first ultimatum Himakshi gave Bipasha was to lose weight, especially around her knees. "I got into weight training. Importantly, I was told to strengthen my thigh and butt muscles to maintain the correct balance so as to offset the weak knees," Bipasha revealed.

There are things she has been advised not to do like wearing heels or walking down stairs. She has also been asked to do twenty minutes in the gym before starting her other workouts. And while the condition is definitely better than what it was say two or three years ago, Bipasha rues the fact that she is still living with osteoarthritis. "I am still under therapy and will always be... throughout my life. However now, I do it myself."

The good news is that Bipasha, who is looking forward to her next release Jodi Breakers has come out a winner from her experience. "When you have such a condition, it ends up making you very strong mentally. I feel physically strong too. I can kick like a footballer," she laughed.

By her own admission, the actress is taking Glucosamine Chondrotin supplements to counter further cartilage damage. "You realise that being beautiful and sexy is not all that matters. Rather, you need to respect the body you are born with," she said.

What experts say

Osteoarthritis is a disorder, mainly caused due to wear and tear of the joint muscles. Also known as Degenerative Joint Disease, Osteoarthritis involves degradation of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone.

"The condition is manageable in the initial stages. If one follows the physical exercise and diet regime," said Dr Ameet Pispati, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon attached to Jaslok and Bhatia hospital. Commonly seen in elderly patients, experts say that the trend has shifted to the younger generation due to excessive activities. "Physiotherapy helps in mobility of the affected muscles," said physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani, who has been treating celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan. " Jyoti Shelar

Unfortunately there isn't really a cure for this... I have the same problem, but i also got into weight training to strengthen my lower body muscles. It sucks as I can't really play sports for a long periods of time as my knees started hurting really quickly... I didn't want to opt for surgery cos again there isn't really a 100% guarantee that everything will be back to normal afterwards! So I'm also living with this!!
I hope your dad's doing alright, i started taking Vitamin D/ Calcium tablets as they were recommended by my doctor, it seems like its helping!

It seriously sucks See when you're young you can ofcourse excercise and make yourself strong again...but my dad also has arthritis in his back. So he can't do the weight trainings. The only surgery that does helps for a few years is getting knee replacements. But apparently recovery after the surgery is terrible. Don't want my dad to go through that. My dad will now get a surgery where they will make holes in his legs and basically see where the problem lies. Then they will immediately try to clean/fix his knee. He will have to recover from it for three weeks...which means he can't go to work. And indeed it's not guaranteed that the surgery will help. And even if it does eventually the pain will return. My dad already takes calcium tablets.

😭

How old are you if I may ask? And do you also hear some strange snap sound when you bent your knee? 😭

by the way this arthritis thing is so weird:
you can also get it when you're overweight...but when you decide to loose weight and work out you can get it too

😒

my dad isn't overweight though...but he also never worked out...he also has a meniscus tear so I kind of hope the pain is coming from there and not from the arthritis...😭

I'm 20. Yeah still quite young. And yes I also hear a kind of snap noise, I was told the reason for that was the rubbing of the bones inside the knee. I hope your dads alright... Surgery isn't the best and if it has to be done for his betterment. My goodwishes are with you.

Hopefully it won't get worse for you You're still so young! My dad is 53...not that old, but still 33 years older than you. My dad is just following the advice of the doctor...the doctor did tell him he could wait...so my dad did wait but now it's getting worse and painkillers don't work anymore. So now my dad is saying he will get surgery. They are going to make 5 holes in his knee 😭 I really don't know whether I should tell him not to go...it's 3 am here...so i will talk to him in the morning. He still manages to sleep but I fear one night the pain might keep him awake 😭
