I've noticed over the past few years, that whenever an actor plays the role of a disabled/autistic or any character that has some kind of condition- that performance is AUTOMATICALLY liked and appreciated.

Whether its Rani in Black, Priyanka in Barfi or SRK in My Name is Khan or even Hrithik in KMG - they all got lots of love for those roles.

I may be in the minority but I find a lot of these roles are overrated and a lot of them actually insult and degrade people who suffer from that condition. The worst has got to be SRK in MNIK and Priyanka in Barfi, I just find both extremely overrated and not sure why everyone talks so highly of those performances. Im not saying it wasnt a good performane but, its praised too much.

Your thoughts? It just doesn't sit well with me, that just because a character is disabled that it should be praise to the skies, something about that logic just seems wrong to me.

Most disabled people want to be treated just like any other person, at least that's why my country believes. So for me, I wouldn't like these performances any differently than a performance of a character with no disability. The thought to elevate these performances annoys me.

ummm i kinda dont know how to respond to this post. i agree with you that people with disabilities want to be treated the same as everyone else. but such characters are so rarely shown on film, so whenever an actor is brave enough to portray a character with a disability and do a good job, it is something to be commended. its obviously harder to portray a person with a disability than someone who is not disabled which is why such portrayals are appreciated. i dont think anyone with a disability would feel bad that an actor playing a character with a disability is praised. the portrayal of these characters creates awareness and understanding of people with disabilities.

I respect your views but I don't think any one mocked their disability at all

they all conveyed the pain of being disabled quite well actually and in all good taste

I think Rani and Ranbir had played their parts to perfection in Black and Barfi respectively. SRK's character was quite difficult to play in MNIK. PC looked very adorable in Barfi as well. Amitabh Bachchan did a fantastic job in Paa. For the actors, these characters are hard if we compare these performances to typical candy floss romance or action movies. Its not about treating physically challenged people differently. Its about portraying their pain which is quite difficult and for a healthy individual to do that so convincingly is applause worthy.
Audience will obviously tend to sympathise with such characters and will develop a soft corner for them. So, there is nothing wrong in audiences loving such characters. In fact, its not that audience loves only these characters. There have been many "normal" characters that are iconic and loved timelessly by the audience. It all depends on an actor's ability to connect emotionally.

Tha can be simply said about any similar type of roles by picking up the succesful and appreciated performances
-Biopics (PST, TDP or BMB), Deglam Middle Class (Queen, Do Dooni Chaar or English Vinglish), Femme Fatales (7 Khoon Maaf or Kangana in Krrish 3), Prostitues (Umrao Jaan, Chameli, Talaash, Devdas) or Patriotic Characters (Lagaan, Chak De India) etc.
😆

------
If tommorrow KRK stars as a Blind guy or something I suppose he will be equally praised

Most well liked characters are normal ones. A few differently-abled characters are also appreciated that too if its commercially successful like Barfi, Black etc. Those films hardly have any hype due to prejudice that it'll be depressing movies so the fact that they do well shows how much people liked the movie.

As a counter, why shouldn't people appreciate Priyanka's Jhilmil as much as a Rani or Silk? Its far removed from their normal self and needs a lot of effort to play it convincingly.

So you are basically saying since we don't like treating a disabled person any different from other ppl , we shouldn't appreciate a disabled role in a movie??? The fact that an actor is going beyond his comfort zone to do a disabled role is what is being appreciated by ppl. This in no way is to make a disabled person inferior to anyone.

Its generally challenging for an actor to do such roles without going OTT and if done well its appreciated. The level of difficulty in acting is definitely more when it comes to doing something which they haven't experienced in life which includes disabilities of any kind and lot of research goes into enacting the basic behavioral characteristics.I hated SRK's or Aamir's autistic act but PC was top notch.

As an example, both PC and Kareena got appreciated for Barfi and JWM but I found PC's autistic act more challenging than Kareena's loudmouth act.
