Saif Ali Khan to star as Count of Monte Cristo

Saif Ali Khan to star in a desi adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Alexandre Dumas's 1844 literary classic, The Count of Monte Cristo, has anchored on Bollywood shores after numerous international adaptations.

The story of a wronged man, who unearths a treasure on his way to revenge and true love, will be directed by Abbas-Mustan and produced by Sunir Kheterpal of Azure Entertainment.

A source close to the developments said, "Saif Ali Khan will be playing a businessman in this film. There will be two heroines opposite him; one will be a younger actress and another six years older than him."

Kheterpal confirmed the news saying, "Yes, we are working on an adaptation of the novel with Saif in the lead. The revenge drama is right up Abbas-Mustan's alley. The film is still untitled and will release in 2015."

Mustan added that film will not be an outand-out adaptation as the story and screenplay are their own and different from that of the novel's.

"We gave Saif a one-and-a-half hour narration before he left for Mauritius for the shoot of Humshakals. He liked it and after he returned we met him with a bound script," says the filmmaker who's waiting for the actor to return to Mumbai from Phantom's Chandigarh schedule, to work out the film's details.

The director duo has worked with the actor earlier in Main Khiladi Tu Anari and the Race franchise. But as Mustan points out, the first one was a two-hero film with Akshay Kumar and in Race and Race 2 too he shared the screen with two heroes- Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor in the first and Anil and John Abraham in the second.

"This is a solo hero project. Tentatively, we should roll in October, after Phantom opens on October 2. But there could be a two-three months time lag," Mustan says. .

I have to say, even though Saif doesn't always get the most hits, the fact that he jumped genres so often (comedy, action, romance) has really worked in his favor.
While on one hand it prevented him from getting a USP that works with audiences (though rom coms can be considered his strength), the fact that he kept dabbling in different genres and experimenting is paying off now.
He's a good candidate for all kinds of movies.
I cant wait to see this one and Happy Ending by DK Krishna

I totally agree!
He has that sort of rare versatility to his face & acting, that is hard to believe. I do think he's a very good actor & quite under-rated!

Can't wait for this one! 😃

Don't you think he's doing too many action films nowadays?

That's why cant wait for Happy Ending and this one. I loves Saif in drama 😳

Ek Haseena Thi! I can't get that movie out of my head when I think of Saif! He is BRILLIANT as a villain! 👏

Umm because he is that very refined, very cultured bad boy sort in reality, eh. ☺️

While Omkara was brilliant, EHT defines Saif's coming of age to me, more than DCH.

But I wish he did more along the lines of Parineeta.
Mature dramas!
Honestly, I think he can become the new age mature romantic hero. He has that intensity.

Sallu is more action and comedy. And he doesn't do too many touchy feely scenes.
Shahrukh's kinda getting very wrinkled. Aamir is...I dunno, not that brooding hot type.
Saif needs to get to this category asap!

Saif is actually far more versatile than imagined.. For the first time I agree completely with a Bebo statement. 😆 😆

No please stay away from this adaption. As this is one of my favourites classic. If they are doing the adaption please do not ruin the essence of the story.

Saif is the best choice as the count, he will bring the right emotions. I have always liked Saif's acting.

My whole family is Saif's and Aamir's fan.

Ek Hassena Thee was a really good movie amazing acting from Saif and Urmila. To bad that movie flopped.

No no, it's not a remake. So the setting is completely different. No counts or anything as such.
It'll be set in modern day India. I think they're just borrowing the idea of revenge, etc.

Even if it's in modern day, still they should stick closer to the material. This will give Saif more scope to perform.
