Priyanka Chopra on inequality in Bollywood salaries

Indo-Asian News Service | March 15, 2014 11:20 IST (Mumbai)
Priyanka is hopeful that that the remuneration of actresses will improve
Successful actress Priyanka Chopra, who has been part of hits like Fashion, Barfi and Dostana, on Friday said an actress' fee may not be on par with her male counterpart, but she is hopeful that soon their remuneration will get better.

When asked why there is disparity when it comes to sharing profits with actresses despite their having a sizeable contribution in a film's success, Priyanka told IANS on the sidelines of FICCI Frames 2014, "I don't think the contribution is as much. I think you have to give credit to the boys also.

"The films make about Rs 200 or Rs 300 crore and it has a lot to do with the boys. We (actresses) haven't made that dent into the box office as the boys have, and I am very hopeful that will happen because we have the kind of audience which is ready to watch women-oriented films.

"Yes, there is a huge disparity in terms of remuneration, but there is also a big disparity in the kind of money that has been brought back by female actors so far. I am hoping we will soon be able to break that and may be remunerations will get better."

No One Killed Jessica, Kahaani, The Dirty Picture and Queen are some of the recent women-centric films that have done brisk business at the box office.

The actress, who attended the 15th edition of FICCI Frames 2014, was in conversation with Nidhi Razdan on women-centric films being made in showbiz.

In her over a decade long career, the actress maintained a balance between parallel and masala films and she has no qualms about being a Hindi film heroine.

She said: "I am proud to be a Hindi film heroine. I am unapologetic about being a Hindi film heroine. I love Hindi cinema I love the blockbusters, but at the same time I also enjoy doing films like Barfi andFashion."

The actress, who is also into singing, feels that women are good at multi-tasking.

"I have realised that women are good at multi-tasking and we do it really well. I was raised with music and I wanted to push myself and see what I can do. I am taking baby steps," the 31-year-old said.

Tfs, I like the fact that the heroines have been noticing this a lot more and have been starting to make more female oriented films.

Box-office pull decides how much one deserves. If the movie is on her (the heroines) shoulder or she is more in demand than her male/female costars, she mustn't charge more than the sum the movie made on its first day (or first Sunday).

Kareena's GTPM made 3 crore on day 1. She doesn't deserve a penny more than 3 crore.

Same with male stars. Ranbir's Besharam made 20 crore on its first day. He deserved 20 crore.

Producer who pays 8-10 crore to Imran Khan is a tool.

So by your logic then Katrina should be getting 20crs? I mean she does have excellent BO pull.

I think it's insane how much money the guys get someone like Salman makes 30+crs while Katrina makes 8crs. I don't see how's that fair?. I'm not saying she should make the same amount but the difference shouldn't be that big.

Katrina's box office pull is nowhere near Salman's. Does she deliver 20 crore opening with Imran? No. Sallu delivers 17 crore with Daisy Shah.😛 8 crore is probably her limit.

I can't find a similar comparison in BW since no heroine oriented movie has crossed 100 cr, but I am sure Jenniffer Lawrence gets paid a lot more than Male A listers for Hunger Games as it rakes in 900 million. When a female heroine does that kind of business, surely she will get paid that much.

Market doesn't discriminate. You get paid depending on how much you bring in. Blame should go to writers/directors who lacks the imagination to make female oriented blockbusters. Vidya, kangana, Deepika etc said same in roundtable interview. Even female writers like Zoya makes journey movie based on male leads. Why not make one about females? Even in romcoms, we don't have a Easy A or Mean Girls where no one remembers the main male characters.

I didn't say she has the same BO pull as Salman even Ranbir doesn't but he's getting paid 20crs isn't he? I'm just saying the gap between them is huge and not fair.

@bold Part The dirty picture did

WW yes. in India, it was 85 cr nett. Anyways, it made good money. As for the difference, producer won't make any profit if he pays that way. Market pull matters. Besides, Kat got 8 cr for a flower pot role in D3. Would any male A lister agree to that kind of screen time? Besides, you have supporting cast doing more work in some films and yet they get paid way less than an actress who comes in few songs and 4 scenes. It's all about market value.

Vidya created a different route with Kahani and TDP, but seems to have fizzled out. If she had given few more superhits and openings, surely she could have even asked for profit share.

Forget about salary difference, but most lead actress don't even have a career once they reach 35-40. Khans still rule BW but where are their heroines from 90s? Karishma, Madhuri, Juhi etc have been replaced by a younger lot. Kareena who has considered a top 3 actress for many years is written off already. While male leads like Shahid get films easily despite delivering a hit like every 4 years. It's a male dominated industry and top heroines have done little to change it. They are happy to be part of such set up where heroine is easily replaceable. If a super star doesn't have dates, producers/directors will wait for months where as if its a heroine, she'll be replaced in no time.

The disparity of income between males and females is so disgusting. Popular female actresses sometimes make less than their male co-star who is less in demand. It pretty much comes down to the sexism which is still embedded in the culture🤢
