What is it with the mustache?

I don't watch a lot of south movies but I have seen couple to notice this, all the leading men support mustaches lol is it like thing in the south?

I mean I don't have anything against mustaches but it will nice if they grow their beards as well. Less creepy and Stalin like 😆
