Is there anything he can't do? Let's rephrase the question. Is there anything he can do and doesn't excel in? And no, we're not punning on his production house. As if mere excelling at directing, acting, writing, singing and dancing wasn't enough, he's triggered a Phailin at the box-office with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (BMB). And competition ran for cover. Frankly, most stars would be happy with half the numbers of BMB. The super success of the film exemplifies his genius. Call it the Midas touch, call it whatever you want. There's no denying that it's the best time to be Farhan Akhtar. As a producer, he struck gold with Fukrey. As an actor, he's the latest entrant to the '100 crore club. He has climbed to the top of every casting agent's wish list. On the social front, he has initiated MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination), an organisation that fights for women's safety.
We're sitting in his new bungalow Vipassana. The name testifies the peace and calm inside. Even the dogs are in a meditative state. Farhan looks rested and in great spirit. His six pack abs vie for attention. Don't blame them. They've been worked extremely hard upon these past few months. And when he puts his head on one shoulder and looks at you with those rapier sharp eyes, waiting for your next question, in that second he reminds you of his dad Javed Akhtar. Chip of the ol' block. Excerpts from chatathon:

Q. So are you on top of the world with a '100 cr film under your belt?
A
I'm happy with the appreciation the film has got. The numbers are but a side effect of it.

Q. Yes. But important nevertheless, right?

A
Of course. Box-office is important. Always has been. Because it's a gauge for success. I'm happy for everyone who was associated with the film, not just myself. Yes, it was a tough film to do. So when you work that hard and it pays off, you feel on top of the world.

Q. How tough was it doing BMB?
A
Honestly, it demanded every ounce of my strength, not just physically but mentally and emotionally too. Also you realise these opportunities are rare. You see so many careers that go without that one genre defining, path-breaking movie. So such rare films deserve the best you can possibly do. Not that you do less for the other movies but these demand so much more. It challenges you and pushes you out of your comfort zone. You have to just sink your teeth into it and make it completely your own. I will not complain at all about the experience. It's done so much for me as an actor. A world of possibilities have opened up. If I can play a Sikh boy from a village convincingly then it's possible to do other things too.

Q. For how many hours did you train everyday for BMB?
A
I started training for the film roughly about seven to eight months before the shooting started. I'd work out for anywhere between five to six hours every day over two sessions. On the days of the shoot it would be one session either in the morning or night depending on the call time. It'd be like a 2-2.5 hour session. When we were shooting the races it would be all day.

Q. Is it true that you went off salt when you were training?
A
No I didn't go off salt for the entire period. Salt stores water in your body. So, if you want your body to look ribbed, your skin to look tight across your muscles, then you have to get rid of as much water in your body as you can. Cutting down your salt intake is one way. So three days before I had to do bare body shots, I'd cut out salt from the diet completely. The body reacts to it exaggeratedly because it goes into shock. Suddenly, it's not getting something that it has been getting all this time. Usually, it gets used to it and finds another way of storing water. So when you shock your body the results are more to be seen. But these things have to be monitored. You have to be with the right people who oversee how you're doing it, how much is your intake. It's one thing to want to look a certain way but you can seriously harm yourself if you don't do it correctly. That's crucial. Everyone loves looking good but it's not easy.

Q. Were you apprehensive about the movie considering stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar had turned it down?
A
Every film goes through its own process. We all have been in situations where we've met actors to do certain parts in a movie and they've turned it down. Then someone else does it and you cannot imagine anyone but that actor in that role. Dil Chahta Hai is a great example of where it started and who got cast eventually. This is how the film world is. There are great opportunities and there are lost opportunities. We all are guilty of lost opportunities and happy recipients of some great opportunities. So when opportunities come your way, you should just appreciate them.

Q. What is the one thing that you learnt from the movie?
A
That there is no limit to what you can creatively achieve, if you can submit yourself to the vision.

Q. You've had a great year as a producer (Fukrey) and as an actor. How do you decide which projects you should do and which you should not?
A
By not over-analysing. The minute analysis seeps in, it goes wrong. You don't select a movie - whether to direct, write or portray - on the basis that it will be a '100 crore film. If you start approaching every script in that manner, you will end up falling flat on your face. I've understood that people are sensitive too and they respect honesty. By honesty, it doesn't mean it has to be a certain kind of film, it can be any kind of film. It could be a laugh out loud entertainer, it could be a thriller, it could be a romantic film and it could be a sport biography. If they recognise that the filmmaker is honest about what he's making they appreciate it. And when they see someone trying to do something just because yeh chal raha hai, they recognise that as well. People want to see you doing something that you look happy doing and they will be happy with you.

Q. Actor or director? What would you choose?
A
At this moment I must admit honestly that I'm enjoying the process of acting. More so because of the avenues that are opening up. I guess writers and directors recognise your work, they recognise the effort you put in, so the material that keeps coming to you, keeps evolving and at times keeps getting better, at times worse too. Right now, I'm doing some exciting movies. There's Dev Benegal's film, Zoya's (sister) film and Bijoy Nambiar's movie being produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Q. You're producing Rock On 2. There were talks about you and director Abhishek Kapoor falling out?
A
No not really. Abhishek and I haven't fallen out or anything. I don't know why people correlate professional and personal relationships. The same thing happened when Arjun Rampal didn't do Don 2. Everyone said, Arjun and Farhan have fallen out'. We are great friends and we will work together again, probably on Rock On 2. There is a time and place for everything. Sometimes people want different things for their film and at times you don't agree on certain things but you can't be childish and stop talking to the other person. We are all grown-ups and we know that everyone has their own calling. Abhishek and I are friends, we meet whenever we get an opportunity to and that will always stay. It's bound to happen that in future we'll end up working again. We enjoy each other's company and each other's work.

Q. Apparently, he felt you walked away with the credit for Rock On! At least that's what he alluded to in an interview to Filmfare...
A
Well things like that, a person can only put in his own head. If anyone asks him, has Farhan told you that or has he done anything, he will say no. Because I have never said it. So it's up to you to believe what people around you are saying. He knows what he has done and I know what he has done. Whenever I mention Rock On! or whenever anyone speaks to me about Rock On! it's incomplete for me to talk about it without saying that if it wasn't for Abhishek Kapoor that film wouldn't have happened. So that's what it is. But who speaks to him and who puts what into whose ears is generally not my problem.

Q. You make an odd couple with Vidya Balan in Shaadi Ke Side/Effects...
A
I've been asked this question once too often in life. I must address this once and for all. I've become a member of the Unusual Casting Club. Whether I work with Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan, Konkona Sen Sharma or Katrina Kaif, I'm always in the unusual club. Who should I work with? I request the media to make a list of actresses who they feel will be usual casting and I shall consider it. Bhagwan ke liye mujhe yeh Unusual Casting Club se nikal do abhi!

Q. What was it like working with Vidya?
A
Really good. The fact that she is a talented actress is known to everyone. When you are doing a film, you want to work with someone who will give you a lot so you can then react and give back. She is good and so easy to work with. She loves having a laugh on the set and has had uncontrollable fits of laughter at times. But she is wonderful and I had a great time with her.

Q. If you had to direct a biopic whom would it be on?
A
It would be on one of the yesteryear actors or directors. It could be Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, even Dilip Kumar saab. We know so little about their lives. Where they came from? How they created this kind of aura about themselves that they become reference points for everyone? It'd be interesting to watch an educative from a film student's point of view.

Q. One thing you envy your sister Zoya for...
A
Envy is a very sad word. How do you envy your family? You can't. But if there is one thing that she has and I'd like to inculcate in myself, it would be her discipline for writing. Also she is much better with people than I am.

Q. Has there ever been sibling rivalry between you?
A
_When we were kids, it was possibly about sharing a room. But not really otherwise.

Q. Tell us about the room.
A
I remember the house was being redone. One of the rooms that was earlier a store room was being converted into a bedroom because Zoya and I couldn't share the bedroom any more. So one of us had to move to the other room. Zoya being the older sister got to choose. My father insisted that she should decide which room she wanted and I had to take the other one. So that was a traumatic moment in my life then. In retrospect, I think she made a bad decision. She took the new room and the old one was mine. It was a better room. So eventually, I came out on top.

Q. What does your wife nag you about?
A
I tend to delay checking my mails. So in a couple of days, there is a huge pile of letters waiting to be read. That sight irritates her so she keeps telling me, Please read it daily if you can'.

Q. Who owns the remote control in your house?
A
It depends on who is home. (Chuckles) When nobody else is around it is me.

Q. What's the secret to a successful marriage?
A
The most important is trust. And the ability to let go is also crucial. Being possessive is a dangerous thing. To give the person freedom to be with whom they want to be, is crucial along with trust.

Q. Do you ever have a difference of opinion with your dad Javed Akhtar?
A
Never to the extent that it can be called a quarrel. For example his take on writing is different from mine. When I write something, I let him read it. Because I know I'll get such a different perspective from him, which will only add to my script. The same thing happens the other way around too. It's nice when you have a person who thinks differently and at the same time has your best interest at heart. He has a world of experience not only in terms of writing, also in terms of knowing people and life. So he brings such a vast reservoir of information and experiences that it's amazing to draw from it. When you talk to him about some character, he'll say this guy reminds me of this one person I had met when I travelled to this place called Siliguri in the '90s. I am like wow and find it interesting and incorporate it in my film.

Q. Who is your biggest critic?
A
The biggest critics are the ones who matter. Honestly, my immediate family - my wife, mother (writer Honey Irani), Zoya, dad and Shabana (Azmi).

Q. What are the things you've learnt from your kids?
A
The biggest thing we can learn from kids is how amazingly in the moment they are. Which is why kids look so beautiful in photographs. They look amazing because they don't have an image of themselves... that this angle is right... They have no such concept. Honestly, actors can learn so much from kids. They are like yay this is me and it's wonderful to be here'. Similarly, when you talk to them, they are honest about their feelings. If they don't want to go somewhere, they don't want to go somewhere. As adults we respect that in kids but we won't respect that in each other. So we need to be more childlike. That's what I take from them all the time. They are so uncorrupt. I wish people could stay just like that.

Q. What advice do you give them?
A
I don't consider myself as an advice-giving dad. Maybe, because I was brought up like that apart from the obvious dos and don'ts like don't put your fingers inside the socket; get into bed by around 9pm. A child needs nurturing and by nurturing I mean you support them in their decisions so that they have the strength to go out there and try what they want. Like a safety net. It's crucial that they find their own voice and they find their own calling. My only advice to them is if you decide to do something, don't do it in half measure. Like when you take up a class, think about it before you do it because you have to attend it three times a week. You can't say after a week, I am bored. So when you make these decisions, try your best to see them through. Again it's just a discipline forming thing. Many times in life you will find yourself in situations where you're not happy. But you have to see yourself through it. This is a good way to start getting gritty.

Q. Are you content with your journey so far?
A
I can't complain about what's going on in my life. Honestly speaking, content is a strange word. Content means chalo ho gaya abhi. So I don't know. I'm happy and proud of where I am. Because a lot of hard work has gone into creating these films. I'm excited because the things that have happened over the last 10-12 years have given me a certain kind of place in the world of films. And I have the opportunity to do many exciting things. So that's a great place to be.n

Shaadi ke 10 side effects

Posted by: Ranja , November 5, 2013

Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar will hit theatres entertaining you with their new upcoming movie Shaadi ke Side Effects. Though this movie is a romantic comedy, here we help you take a look at the actual 10 side effects associated with shaadi or marriage. It's fun to be married. But it also has its side effects which can be considered as matters that help you grow as a wise human being.

The apparent barbaadi of independence

Many men and women think that shaadi means surrendering one's independence. But the truth is that you've got to know your partner well before marrying. If you think he/she doesn't prefer giving you the space you require, you've got to steer away from marrying that person. But it's not only about space. It also involves trust and loyalty.

Love seems to grow wings as practical needs crop up

Life does not run on kisses, hugs and sex. Marriage seems to act like Red Bull which gives love the wings to fly. Yes, marriage turns boring when you think about taking care of your kids, booking the gas, paying the electricity and mobile bills and buying the grocery, without getting a break.

The bite of the Bachat bug

Marriage makes you realise the value of money. Till then you've had a lovely time at your parents' place. Now that you are with your partner, you've got to understand that he won't like you being a spendthrift. So you gradually learn how to curb your expenses and start saving.

Household chores replacing gyms

That sounds scary. But the price hike in the market might not look worthy of keeping a cook perhaps. So you've got to learn how to cook till you get a cook whose salary you can afford. You might feel drained out if you have to cook after returning from office. Sometimes the domestic help might not turn up. It is marriage that teaches you how to keep your house clean, disinfectant and also wash your own clothes. Result, you lose weight!

Growing strong shoulders for responsibilities

When you are young responsibilities sound scary, burdensome. But there always comes when you will have to shoulder responsibilities. It not only towards your parents, spouse and child. It is also towards your parents-in-law and other relatives. It is your responsibilities that make you realise your worth. For that you need to work hard and think with a clear mind.

Realise your priorities without the tu-tu-mein-mein fights

You are no more single woman once you are married. Sometimes change of plans might make you angry. But your duties and responsibilities towards the elders of the family make you realise that you have to make sacrifices at times. It is only a momentary sacrifice. The joy of marriage lies in spending more time with your partner.

Getting used to less of pampering

You gradually realise that your partner is not your mother, let alone your mother-in-law. Girls who are the single child of their parents should get this grilled into their heads that no one will understand her needs like her parents do. They will have to express their likes and dislikes in a polite manner so that their in-laws and husband can make arrangements to make them feel comfortable in the new atmosphere.

Understanding the pain of loneliness

Your partner is your friend with whom you share your home, quarrel and even boss over. You start wondering how you have been spending time being single. You can also feel the pain of people who have lost their partners or have not been able to find a suitable partner.

Being the guinea pig of your partner

Remember that you are the closest person to your partner. He might as well try some sexy lingerie on you which you might be too embarrassed or least confident to try. But you can avoid hurting him by wearing it in whatever shape you are in.

Learning when to say a polite but firm No'

Marriages become irritating when your partner takes you for granted. Instead of taking the rash decision of screaming and creating a chaos, learn to read the signs of danger when you are being taken for granted. You can say the No' only when you have created a ground for yourself. That is made by performing your duties.
