Big B purportedly has won National Award for Black
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16, 2006 - 05:19 IST
Although, the National Awards ceremony has not yet been held officially, as per sources the Best Actor award might be conferred upon Amitabh Bachchan for his portrayal of a teacher of a deaf, blind and mute girl in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black. Bachchan has earlier won the National Award for Best Actor for his films Saat Hindustani and Agneepath.

Sources seem to have learnt about the winners beforehand. The Best Actress award winner is Sarika for her role of a mother affected by communal riots in Parzania, directed by Rahul Dholakia. The same film also has picked up the Best Director Award. Buddhadev Dasgupta's Bengali film Kalpurush was chosen as the Best Film. The National Awards Jury is headed by old time actress, B Saroja Devi.

The Awards were supposed to be announced in Delhi on Monday. However, the ceremony has been delayed until further notice. This decision was met with a lot of resentment among the film fraternity. The Awards function will officially take place at a later date.

Ya Ali' from Gangster, a copy of an Arabic number
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16, 2006 - 05:25 IST
Pritam is in a soup yet again for plagiarism. This time it's for the song 'Ya Ali' from the film Gangster, which apparently is a copy of an originally Arabic number called 'Ya Ghali'. The song 'Ya Ghali' is being composed by a Kuwait based band called GuiTaRa. The band seems to be very upset with the Bollywood composer using their tune without even informing them. The band leader Fahad Shammoh says that they saw the song on TV and it is completely stolen. He says that the credit for the success of 'Ya Ali' goes to 'Ya Ghali' and therefore the profits should be shared with them.

Apparently, the music company which owns the rights of the Arabic song is owned by Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia royal family. The Prince is now planning to sue Pritam over the issue and the case is in progress. Pritam however, denies getting "inspiration" from 'Ya Ghali'. He says that he didn't know this song even existed. He says that he was inspired by a Muslim folk song which has been around for centuries.

However, Zubeen Garg, the singer of 'Ya Ali' says that he knew about the original song but adds that it's not being completely copied. Zubeen says that sometimes it's the producer's insistence for a particular and the composer has no say in it.
Bobby Deol and Riteish Deshmukh in Namaste London
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16, 2006 - 06:20 IST
Vipul Shah has started shooting for Namaste London. The film that stars Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel, Rishi Kapoor and Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh is one of the most ambitious projects of the director till now. Vipul Shah has apparently roped in Peter Fields, a famous Hollywood DOP to shoot the film. Also, the rest of his crew are famous at international level.

Recently, when we caught Vipul's team shooting in London, we were surprised to see Bobby Deol and Riteish Deshmukh on the sets. While Riteish seemed to be dressed in a formal suit and was walking around with Katrina Kaif, Bobby Deol seemed to be just chilling out. Probably, Riteish is doing a cameo in the film. The shoot was happening on the streets on London and everyone seemed very relaxed.

Katrina though, was the one who caught our attention. She was dressed in a multi-colored Punjabi dress, wearing colored bead necklaces and a different hairdo. Seems like Katrina will be seen in a whole new avatar in Namaste London.

Sameera Reddy is on a career high these days. Her first Bengali movie Kaalpurush has bagged the National award. However, Sameera plays it modest and doesn't want to take any credit for it as she says that she didn't dub for the film.

Director Dasgupta was so impressed by Sameera's performance in Kaalpurush that he has signed her for his next venture as well. This untitled film will be based on terrorism. Sameera will start shooting for this film from October.
Divya Khosla-Kumar to turn director?
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16, 2006 - 07:47 IST
Remember the petite Divya Khosla who was last seen in the Amitabh Bachchan-Bobby Deol starrer, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo. She subsequently quit acting after getting married to T-Series honcho, Bhushan Kumar. In all probability, she might be making a Bollywood comeback soon. But this time, not as an actress, but as a director!

She is already undergoing training to become a director. She plans to direct a music video for T-Series. Her husband believes that if she proves her talent in this project, he will launch her as a full fledged director.
Hyderabad police doesn't allow Rakhi to perform
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16, 2006 - 07:54 IST

Item girl Rakhi Sawant has done it again. After being splashed all over the media for her lip lock with Mika, she is in the limelight, all over again. This time she was asked to leave Hyderabad, by the city police. A show featuring Sawant, among others had been organized at Vijaybhaskar Reddy indoor stadium.

Apparently, the organizers did not mention Sawant's name while asking for permission from the police officials. But as soon as the publicity featuring Sawant began, the police put its foot down. They believed that the controversial performer should not be part of the show. They thought her performance could lead to law and order problems. Efforts to obtain permission proved to be futile and Rakhi left the city. However, cops arrived at the scene and refused to let her perform.

The show was organized as part of an annual function of a real estate firm. There were about 800 invites. Other performers included Vasundhara Das and Telugu film actresses Sangeetha and Tanu Rai.
SRK – Karan rift: Karan talks
By Taran Adarsh, August 16, 2006 - 23:56 IST
Not all's well between Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. At least that's what the gossip mongers in Mumbai would want us to believe. The [loose] talk doing the rounds of the industry is that SRK and Karan have had a major tiff. Reason: Trouble erupted soon after SRK watched KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA and was upset with Karan for sidelining him in the film. With Abhishek getting interesting sequences and Rani walking away with a meatier role, SRK, the gossip mills swore, was extremely upset with Karan for giving him a raw deal in the film.

Karan laughs at the rumors when I broached the topic last evening. "Shah Rukh is very happy with his role and also with the film in totality. He's not upset positively," the film-maker clarifies, "In fact, he's happy that he's got a chance to play a role that's not stereotype. And also a role that he hadn't essayed earlier. Not just SRK, each member of the cast is more than proud of K.A.N.K."

But how did these rumors originate in the first place? "A section of the trade is indulging in loose talk. Instead of encouraging a film from the fraternity, they are trying to pull it down by sending rubbish text-messages. I seriously feel I've become a veteran listening to all the muck being spread about my films. The industry wrote off KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM in their initial weeks. It doesn't bother me anymore," Karan hits back.

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA too has had its share of back-biting. "The business of the film should silence the detractors. See, KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is not the usual Karan Johar film. It's raked up a lot of debates and discussions. I knew it all along that it would take time for the film to settle down. It's an unusual film that comes as a jolt when you watch it the first time. It's a reflection of reality, it's not about unreal worlds. And a film like this grows with time," he smiles.

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 17, 2006 - 03:11 IST
Sunny Deol has certainly been a busy man, lately. Apart from his forthcoming film Naksha, he is also gung-ho about his real life role as a producer in collaboration with K.Sera Sera. As part of this venture, the first film to be made is a remake of the Telugu hit Athadu. Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, it will star Bobby Deol. The shooting schedule begins in November, this year.

SRK wows the Maharashtrians!
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 17, 2006 - 05:02 IST
Now this is something which has never been seen before. If you tune in to the Marathi TV channels, you just might see Shah Rukh Khan dancing to traditional Marathi lavani and tamasha music! It's for an ad for Sunfeast Marie biscuits which will be launched in Maharashtra. Other Bollywood biggies associated with this ad include Vishal-Shekhar who have composed the music and Farah Khan who has done the choreography. It has been produced by Shah Rukh Khan's company Red Chillies.

It was Farah who approached the musical duo to compose a Marathi folk tune, since the ad was targeted at the Marathi speaking crowd. They were quite excited since they have never done something like this before. They decided to use 'lavani' or 'tamasha' music to bring the quintessential Marathi flavor. Says Shekhar, "Even in the past, we have done a lot of work for Red Chillies. The funda of the ad was to forget the old Marie and start off with the new Sunfeast Marie. It was something very interesting because we have never done such work, before. It's a very cool lavani meets hip hop score, targeted at the Marathi speaking population."

The King Khan will be seen doing traditional dance steps in tune with the music. That's SRK for you, always up for trying something new! Well, they don't call him the King Khan for nothing, do they?

After the recent Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, they are now getting set for the audio release of Ritesh Sidhwani & Farhan Akhtar's much-awaited Don, which we hear, is happening worldwide on August 23. The word is out that Udit Narayan and Sunidhi Chauhan have sung the recreated versions of Khaike Paan Banaras Waala and Yeh Mera Dil respectively, which are being tipped as the highlights of the film.

Interestingly enough, the film's overseas distributor, U T V, has already pushed out teaser extracts of the Don theme track and the title song [Main Hoon Don] on UK & US radio, as part of the promotional build-up to the film's much-hyped music release.

Sajid's next 'Jaane-E-Mann'

click for larger view
Sajid Nadiadwala who has produced several hits like 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega' and 'Mujhse Shaadi Karoge' besides others, is busy in his next 'Jaaneman' though its title has been changed to 'Jaane-E-Mann' starring Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and Preity Zinta. The movie will be directed by Shirish Kunder. Sajid denies that the title has been changed on account of numerology; this is rather to make its pronouncement easier.

Sunny in Pak's 'Kaffila'

click for larger view
For the first time macho man Sunny Deol, an Indian actor, will play the lead role in Pakistani writer-producer-director-actor Ammtoje Mann's 'Kaafila'. Incidentally, Sunny will portray a complete role-reversal of sorts since he has always played "anti-Pakistani" roles in his earlier films like 'Gadar', 'Border' and 'Maa Tujhe Salaam'. This is to recall that not in the distant past, Pakistanis in the US and the UK, besides Pakistan, refused to watch Sunny starrer movies. Even the US and the UK, distributors had refused to buy films starring Sunny Deol. The two female leads in the film are played by Sana Nawaz and Mona Lisa, renowned film and television actresses of Pakistan will play the female leads.

Karisma in production

click for larger view
Karisma Kapoor has moved to Mumbai, presumably for her comeback in Bollywood, and certainly not because of any differences with her in-laws. She is trying to bag an assignment with Yashraj Films in the meantime. This time she will not confine herself to doing movies only as in the past. She has a plan to venture into production, and that too with her younger sis Kareena who has already made a place for herself in the industry. If both the sisters join hands, industry pundits forecast a bright future for their adventure.

Esha in Ramu's 'Darling'

click for larger view
Director Ram Gopal Verma has signed Esha Deol in place of Lara Dutta in his next 'Darling'. Ramu says that Lara left for London on some pretext so he was left with no alternative but to replace her. However, sources close to Lara refute Ramu's version. These sources say that Lara's role was egligible as compared to the movie;'s another star Bipasha Basu. So, Lara decided to quit it. Anyway, this is a gain for Esha Deol who will now act as Ramu's 'Darling'.

Ananth is busy in 'Victoria 203' remake

Director Ananth Mahadevan has denied that he is faced with any dilemma about his remake of 'Victoria No 203'. Neither Om Puri has quit his movie nor has Paresh Rawal though the latter has sought a huge fee from the producer. Ananth justifies the presence of these two guys in his movie on the basis of research that recommends the two actors who relate with the youths. Ananth is sure to provide a new feel to his movie. Besides, he has got his script of 'Aankh Micholi' back from HMV and handed it over to T-Series to make a movie on it.

Lucky Bhumika Singh

A new face has entered Bollywood, and has shot to fame even in her first movie. She is young and pretty Bhumika Singh. She was lucky to be spotted by Dharmesh Darshan, director of 'Aapki Khatir', for his movie casting top stars like Akshaye Khanna, Amisha Patel and Priyanka Chopra. Well, she has another plus point too; she is the daughter of Hari Singh, business manager of several stars, including Sridevi and Aishwarya Rai.

Suneel in trouble

click for larger view
Suneel Darshan who is shooting for his 'Shakalaaka Boom Boom' in South Africa has not been too happy as he is faced with a number of problems. First, his cast seems to be ditching him. His lead cast Sana Panscholi has left him in the midway as she hasn't been too happy with the skimpy dress the director wants her to wear during the shooting. Another female artist, Isha Koppikar, quit because of the absence of promised lead role in the movie. Even Bobby Deol who is the hero, had to leave for his next movie titled 'Jhoom Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' of Yashraj Films, even before the shooting was completed. Besides, it is said that its story is similar to that of Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'London Dreams'!
DELHI HOSTS BHOJPURI MOVIES

Believe it or not, but it's a fact that Delhi is turning into a new avatar of Bollywood. More and more Hindi movies are being shot in the Capital of India. Besides, regional movies, especially those in the Bhojpuri language, are in great demand. Not only the producers and the directors but also Bollywood stars find these movies more popular among the masses and they fetch huge money for them with lesser investment or effort. The Yamuna River and its bank is the backdrop for many two-and-half-hour motion pictures, it is learnt. Incidentally, the smashits team has found out that 'Chat Mangni Pat Biyah', directed by Ashok Mehra, an IPTA member, is being shot at present.

Some other movies shot at the same location in the near past include 'Beta Bihar Ka' and 'Suraj Hokah Na Sahai'. A producer says that between 25 and 30 Bhojpuri films have already been shot in the capital during the last two years. He adds that Delhi is the perfect destination for Bhojpuri filmmakers as Yamuna provides a nice rural backdrop. Moreover, T-series, Venus, Lara, Raja and Eagle which release the music CDs of these movies are based in and around Delhi. Even music albums are being shot in the capital. According to reliable sources, even Big B shot some scenes of his upcoming Bhojpuri film during his recent visit to the capital.
OM PURI: DOING COMEDIES IN BOLLYWOOD

In the News

Om Puri who has given his fans several art movies has in the past has now vowed to do comedies only as far as Bollywood is concerned. However, he would continue to do art movies in Hollywood. He says that the Indian audience doesn't like distorted and imitated movies. Hence, he is happy doing comedies in the commercial genre to earn his livelihood. "Otherwise, I am afraid I would have to starve".

Movies like 'Chachi 420', 'Hera Pheri', 'Deewane Hue Paagal', 'King of Bollywood', 'Kyun Ho Gaya Naa', 'Kyunki', 'Maalamal Weekly', and 'Chup Chupke' have gone well with him. We caught Om Puri recently in New Delhi during the shooting of 'Delhi Heights' and chatted with him. When asked about his forthcoming movies, he has said that he is doing Farhan Akhtar's 'Don', Manishankar's 'Mukhbir' and Ravi Chopra's 'Babul', besides 'Khatta Meetha', 'Tere Pyaar Ki Kasam' and 'Amar Joshi Shaheed Ho Gaya'.

click for larger view
Today the trend is for Priyadarshan's entertainers rather than Govind Nihlkani's serious ones. When asked if he is satisfied with the current trend of Bollywood movies, he said, "The trend is like a season which comes and goes. It's just a market plan to make money and this strategy was also used in the past. If someone says that the audience is interested in sexy movies, then it is wrong. The audience watches only that we deliver. " If the audience watches what you deliver then why do the movies fail at box office? " The audience doesn't like to see the same type of drama every time. They seek a change. That's why the movies on the same subject are accepted once or twice and then they are rejected."

Child artist-turned-actor Mink has now turned a filmmaker too. "I had never been serious about acting, so I thought of entering production as a step in that direction." Mink began her career at an early age of 13 with no less than evergreen actor-director-filmmaker Dev Anand in the latter's 'Pyar Ka Tarana'. After doing 13 movies, she has become a producer of 'Kathputli' along with her brother Pannu Barad who has written 'Kathputli's story. Besides, she has announced two more movies. The smashits met and chatted with her recently.

Excerpts of her chat:

What prompted you to enter film production?

I entered into production as I had never been serious about acting. I always felt about doing something for which acting isn't the right medium. That's why I stepped into production. I am happy with my decision and also feel satisfied with it.

How come you play the lead role too?

In fact, I accepted to do the lead role as its writer Pannu and director Sanjay Khanna pressed me to play this role. They convinced me that the role is most suitable and close to my personality. And, I can do justice with it.

Did you find any major difference between acting and production?

Oh, yes, there is a lot of difference between the two. In production one has to be vigilant about every thing whereas in acting one my just take care of one's role. Our parameters of thinking change.

Do you find any change in yourself now?

Yes, I am matured now as compared to the past. My outlook about everything has altogether changed, including industry.

Ok, what's 'Kathputli' all about?

click for larger view
This is a psycho-thriller. I have produced this movie in cooperation with my brother Pannu Barad. The movie centers around a young girl who loses her memory in a mishap. So, her family undergoes a lot of difficulties. This is the theme of the movie.

What follows then?

What follows her loss of memory consequent to the mishap creates suspense. Does she regain her memory? Do we find out the cause of the mishap? Does her life become normal? The movie answers these questions. One can know about them only after watching the movie.

What are your forthcoming movies?

Besides 'Kathputli' I am making a movie named 'Neend'. I have signed Sunny Deol for this comedy. However, I haven't yet chosen its director as well as the other cast. I am also planning one more movie.

What are views about item numbers?

click for larger view
Item numbers were rare in the past and were limited to few movies. Hence, only a very few heroines had an opportunity to do item numbers. However, every other movie has a dance number these days. So, each and every heroine has a chance to do it. Moreover, in the past item numbers had glamour while today they happen to be sensational and sensuous!

Baweja confirms Adlabs' support

Harry Baweja has blasted the myth created by certain industrywallas that Adlabs which had earlier backed all of his films like 'Love Story 2050' and 'Speed' has suddenly withdrawn its support. Harry denies it and calls it baseless. In fact, he claims, 'Speed' directed by Vikram Bhatt starring Zayed Khan, Amrita Arora and Sophie Chaudhary, is almost complete. And, 'Love Story 2050' will commence its shooting next month. He wonders how can he afford to disturb 'Love Story 2050', which is the debut of Harman, Harry's son. Besides, he has a plan to launch one more movie with the support of Adlabs though it is yet to be titled. He has, however, regretted all those who are involved in spreading this rumor should have crosschecked the facts with him before rushing to any conclusion.

Arshad's eccentricity

Arshad Warsi admits that he had lost track of the earlier avatar of ' Lage Raho Munnabhai' during its shooting. Director Rajkumar Hirani had no choice but to cancel the scheduled shoot and ask Arshad to study the DVD of 'Munnabhai MBBS' and come prepared later. In contrast to this, Sanjay Dutt remembered how he played the role and could easily take off from where he had left Munnabhai in 'Munnabhai MBBS'.
