It is hilarious how everyone from Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone to Kangana Ranaut and Chitrangda Singh has been telling the press that they were shortlisted to audition for the new Fast & Furious film. In reality, the casting director of the seventh installment in the popular Hollywood franchise has appointed scouts across the subcontinent to encourage actresses to audition for a tiny role in the movie. So it's not as if our Bollywood divas were personally handpicked to test for the part. In fact, they're among hundreds of girls across the country who have rushed their audition tapes to the London casting office. Lunchbox newbie Nimrat Kaur was also approached, as were Isabelle Kaif, Katrina's younger sister, and Aviva Bidappa, daughter of Bangalore's famous fashion guru Prasad Bidappa. Each has reportedly sent in her tape and is awaiting the call.

Vin Diesel confirms Kurt Russell for Fast and Furious 7 and 8

Star explains why Kurt Russell makes sense for future films in the franchise

'Fast and Furious 7' is revving up and speeding into production with star Vin Diesel busily doing the promotional rounds for his latest 'Riddick'. After many rumours and reports of action icon Kurt Russell being a new addition to the 'Fast and Furious' franchise, Vin Diesel has just put his foot down and accelerated proceedings by declaring the rumours true.

Not only that but Vin Diesel has also teased that Russell's character may only be being introduced in the seventh of the series but promises more from the star in the eighth 'Fast and Furious' film.

Speaking to Extra, Diesel explained "There is a very big rumor that Kurt Russell will come in, and because it's you, I'll give you a little more... the eighth script in the series is somewhat akin to 'Escape from New York.' This won't make sense now, but it will make sense later. Kurt Russell was the perfect person to introduce in '7' to play out the eighth storyline that everyone is going to go crazy on."

With those words, fans of the series can breathe a sigh of relief. The legendary Kurt Russell will be joining the cast along with other new recruits; action man Tony Jaa and Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone. Russell has played many iconic roles in the past from Elvis to R.J MacReady in 'The Thing' to Stuntman Mike in Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof'. However his most iconic role is perhaps that of Snake Plissken in 'Escape from New York'.

With Diesel teasing that 'Fast and Furious 8' will be akin to John Carpenter's classic dystopian science fiction thriller, what does that mean for the fast car franchise? Escape from New York features Russell as the one eyed anti hero Snake Plissken, an ex-soldier turned criminal who agrees to save the President of the USA when he crash lands in a future Manhattan island that is now a totally anarchic and impenetrable maximum security prison. With microscopic explosives injected into his body, Plissken is forced to cooperate and complete his mission.

If Russell is introduced in 'Fast and Furious 7' as a good guy, can we expect him to be a prison escape expert? Could the eighth film then see him helping some of the team out of a maximum security prison? Or when Diesel says 'Fast and Furious 8' is akin to 'Escape from New York', is he perhaps instead talking about a plot to save the President? Or could it be that microscopic explosives are involved? Another possibility is that 'Fast and Furious 8' goes science fiction and fast forwards to years in the future but this is perhaps really stretching credibility now.

Whatever happens, Kurt Russell is definitely on board for two of future 'Fast and Furious' films according to Diesel and that can only be good news for the flourishing franchise.
