'Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara' is the perfect Independence Day film, in which Akshay Kumar channels his inner Manoj Kumar. "Aslaaam"

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Review

August 15th, 2013 by Mohar Basu

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Movie Poster

Rating: 2/5 stars (Two Stars)

Star cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Imran Khan, Sonali Bendre

Director: Milan Luthria

What's Good: It's yet again a Once Upon… story where every line is a punch line and retro look is fantastic with its aroma of nostalgia!

What's Bad: There's melodrama, overdrama and too much drama.

Loo break: A few!

Watch or Not?: Milan Luthria's OUATIMD lacks the effervescence and naturalness of its prequel. The vibrancy of the script is diluted with hard-to-believe romance, minimal story, the film falters due to lack of action and the calamity that OUATIM reflected in abundance. This one isn't really a dull bore but fail to spark off the enigma of the former edition! Crime thrillers and love dramas shouldn't be mingled, it results in an insipid broth.

Starting off from where Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai had ended, the film begins with Shoaib picking up a local urchin to build for himself a loyalist at crime becoming his Godfather. 12 years later, Shoaib is the biggest gangster of Bombay who handles in all the way from an Arab Nation (Presumably Dubai).

Ditched by a man who plots to kill him, he makes a trip back to the city in order to eradicate his opponent.

Meanwhile he and the urchin he had adopted fall in love with a budding actress, which indeed results in the strife that initiates between them a strife as to who will win the girl.

This isn't another love triangle of ordinary people. There is a gangster in love here and the story fierces itself with the love, passion and obsession of its characters to win along with the police on the hunt for the man who rules Dongri.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Review: Script Analysis

There are very few euphoric moments in the film partly because of its lazy writing that is carried out rather shakily, and rest because it doesn't meet the standards set by its colossal predecessor. I can almost count the number of times I felt that ecstatic high inside me during the film. There are dialogues put in which make no sense and some are actually offensive to your gray cells without being remotely entertaining.

The film's first part has a few good moments but nothing that the trailer hadn't shown you. A few brilliant action scenes in the first half are done fabulously. There is a scene where Akshay and Imran leap off from one terrace to another, and that is perhaps the only place where the film shows some panache of what it had attempted on.

The romantic angle was overtly done and somehow doesn't have the required blaze. The chemistry between Sonakshi and her actors is not fabricated neatly and somehow it comes across as a shock when she declares her love for one and rejects the other! The screenplay had barely given any tender moments or delicate minutes of love and hence romance obsession seems quite out of the blue.

The film fails to be a proper crime thriller or a love saga as it dismally flops at both doing absolutely no justice to either.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Review: Star Performances

Akshay Kumar is so sleazy that he will crack you up with his dialogue delivery. It is outright hilarious. The actor fails to add depth in his character and couldn't infuse charisma or persona in a role that Emraan Hashmi has immortalized. This Shoaib can at best manage to be a mock don but his over the top acting is a flop show!

Sonakshi Sinha goes wrong every time she is in a commercial film. One can be rest assured that her performance in Lootera is a fluke or a mere shadow of director's flawless cinematic abilities that he could extract such a wonderful performance from her. In this film, she is a chatterbox replete with idioticity which the director frames as naiveness. She shrieks as if possessed in the climax scene as bombards all her good, if she had done any.

Imran Khan is plain flat with nill emotions in his dialogues. His trying-too-hard-to-be-suave act will leave you yawning and doesn't help in furthering the impression we have of him-his inherent inability to act. He could have done so much with the role but alas he painstakingly wastes every bit of it

The supporting cast is needless and have nothing substantial to do. Mahesh Manjrekar's buffonery was a pain in the literal sense of the word.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Review: Direction, Editing and Music

Milan Luthria has given fabulous films before and this film feels stark and abrupt given his wonderful repertoire of fantastic films. His don shows off, has no charisma, his story lacks charm, the romance is not beautiful enough and fails to strike a chord and you will end up laughing at moments in the film's most nailbiting moments. There is no simple way to present the fact but here it is – the film is a fiasco of sorts. Lesser thanHimmatwala but nevertheless a damp squib that is the last thing expected from Luthria and Balaji. Rajat Aroraa's dialogues felt labored and did not have the ease in it throw!

Pritam's music ain't extraordinary and the editing could have been better. But it is the script, the direction and the acting that dooms it all for them!

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara! Review: The Last Word

Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara screams to Bollywood to do away with its ridiculous trend of Dobaara films simply coz this time the Dobaara was painful on its audience. I am going with a generous 2/5 for its novel concept which was built flimsily. I was left flabbergasted at how audaciously the film spends so much energy flaunting nothing that they give its real theme a miss! It is hard to point out whom to blame, but the bottom line doesn't change – you can easily miss this one and save yourself a headache.

I'm excited for this film. Akshay!

I just read a DNA article interview on Milan Luthria and from the few things he's said about Akshay, I want to see how well he does.

"I could see all through that he was relishing the experience of a film that gave him something different to do." - Milan Luthria

More than anything, I'm waiting for his performance, a chance to see him act rather than his typical masala and khiladi kind of films.

Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara Starts 15th August with Housefull Boards.

Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara (OUATIMD) starts with Housefull boards at Indian Box Office on Independence Day (Thursday, 15th August), literally all over India. This is rejoice time for all Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan fans.

Film has struggled to get big release and is released on limited screens of 1250-1300 screens. But despite that it has managed a bumper start at ticket counter. Film has opened to 80-85% occupancy all over India in early Morning shows itself. Just imagine how will be the occupancy for Day and Night shows. Occupancy is just to increase with each passing shows as huge advance booking is reported for the day. Already many shows tickets are Sold Out. This story is not only for big cities like Delhi or Mumbai, but also for all the other cities, be it Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Kanpur or anywhere in India. OUATIMD is one of the best start of Akshay Kumar in recent times. Only dent is that it has been released on limited screens.

OUATIMD has taken an opening of 85-90% in Delhi and Gurgaon City in Morning shows. Occupancy in Morning shows for Mumbai City is around 75-80%. In Hyderabad it is registering historic occupancy of 90%+.

Despite limited release of OUATIMD, don't be surprised if the film crosses 9-10 crore nett mark by the end of the day. Even more after that can't be ruled out after looking at the Morning shows trend

ONCE UPON AY TIME IN MUMBAI DOBAARA Saved By Star Akshay Kumar

Pluses:

The clear winner of the movie is Rajat Aroraa who has put so much effort into writing punchy dialogues of the film. Sonakshi Sinha fits well in her role and justifies it. Couple of songs are very good.Pitobash Tripathy once again portrays excellent performance as Dedh Tang. Akshay Kumar gets all the clap and seetis

Minuses:

Imran Khan fits very poor in the bill. His urban dialect misfits with the punchy dialogues that he absolutely can't carry. The well-written dialogues have been wasted on a plot of love triangle with a backdrop of underworld. The backdrop of underworld does not impact or contribute to movie in any way.The biggest disappointment in the film is its climax which may be trying to leave a room for its sequel but leaves the audience puzzled. Milan fails big time as director

Critic Rating:

2.5/5

Business Rating:

3.5/5

Verdict:

Watch it for Akshay Kumar and dialogues

Detail Analysis:

If it is a sequel and that too Akshay Kumar starrer then film has to be big. OUATIMD is much awaited film and releasing on big Independence Day. Film has ensemble star cast consisting of Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha,Mahesh Manjerkar and Sonali Bendre. Vidya Balan comes for 2 second in middle of Tayyab Ali song.

Film has simple plot and it is a complete love triangle. There is only a faint backdrop of underworld and there is not much action or gang war which take place. Imran's character (Aslam) brought to underworld by dreaded don Akshay Kumar ( Shoaib) and ultimately both fall in love with Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha). How this love turns into war is the rest of the film. But its underwhelming climax which robs you of the fun.

Performance wise Akshay Kumar is star and he carries the film on his shoulder. Every thing keeps falling around him from actors to script but he holds his ground. He plays Shoaib with all finesse and aura but the whole character and over written dialogues leave him gasping. Sample few dialogues -

- Doodh mein neebo jo daalta hai paneer uska hota hai

- Devar ke din jab maut aati hai to use bhabhi achi lagne lagti hai

- jab main tumse mila tha tab tum mere ghuton tak aate the, par aa j main tumhe tumhe tumahare ghuton pe laa doonga

- tumari aankhein mujhe police ki headlight ki yaad dilati hain

- yeh pyar ka panga hai ismein pyar se kaam nahin chalta

Watch out for Akshay's act in very last scene, what an intense shot! Imran Khan is a disaster and completely looks out of the place throughout. His dialogue delivery is poor and so is his whole caricature look. Sonakshi gives some real fresh air in this over laden emotional drama with her grounded mature act. Mahesh Manjerkar and Sonali Bendre is decent plus other supporting cast is good.

Music is average to say the least where "Yeh Tune Kya Kiya" works big time but other songs just go through the motion. Film suffers from very poor editing and post interval portion is a big drag. Writing is shining point of the film but over dose spoils the recipe. There is punch in every dialogue which after some tome start getting on to nerves. Cinematography is decent and action lacks novelty.

But it is director Milan Lutharia who is the real culprit as he completely goes wrong in every department, be it choosing a love story for underworld sequel or miscasting Imran. This is one film which he would like to forget after successful TDP and OUATIM.

Overall this is a film which will take a good opening riding on holiday weekend but film will find it tough to sustain beyond weekend. It is only Akshay Kumar and dialogues which save this one from sinking.

Go for this for dialogue and Khiladi Kumar!
