The western traditional form of dancing — the cabaret — was a huge part of Hindi film in the 1960s and '70s likeTeesri Manzil, Inteqaam Caravan, Anamika and many more. But then it vanished.
Why Cabaret?
Gunday is set in Calcutta in the '70s. While researching for the film director Ali Abbas Zafar discovered that there were two different social strata in the city — one which was the underprivileged and the others were the elite who would enjoy cabaret performances. International troupes would perform in the city.
Abbas decided to highlight that in his film and brought in a troupe from Paris to be part ofGunday. A set of '70s style club in Calcutta (now Kolkata) was created for the song.
Getting the rhythm
Priyanka rehearsed for the song with the Parision troupe to get the right form and rhythm of cabaret dancing. What has been seen in Hindi cinema till now is an itemised desi version, PC's dance will be more of a traditional form of cabaret. Her look has been designed by Subarna Ray Chaudhari." The song, has been choreographed by Bosco-Caesar.
What's cabaret?
Cabaret is a style of variety entertainment, of dancing, singing, comedy, and short theatrical pieces, in a restaurant, pub, or nightclub with a stage for performances. The audience usually sits at tables, often dining or drinking.
Cabaret began in France around the turn of the 19th century, later flourishing in Germany and the United States. Some of the most famous early cabarets in France were the Chat Noir, the Moulin Rouge, and the Folies-Bergre, the last two of which are still in business. Elaborate costumes and stunning showgirls became the highlights of this form of entertainment as time went by.
