failing to understand the audience taste. Kahani was a hit and so was Barfi which was a very unoriginal film with slow screenplay but why a film like Lootera rejected? slow paced movies worked before why not this film. i feel bad for Ranveer singh and sonakshi. They acted very well in the film but the poor box office results and mixed WOM will affect their future choices and films too

just becoz films like kahaani, vicky donor, english vinglish worked becoz of WOM, that doesn't mean every film would do...unless the content in the film holds some special key.

lootera is an out and out ART film, and whatever praise it has, the commercial driven people shall never pay for such a movie as it doesn't carry mass appeal even with terrific WOM. especially in multiplexes where the tickets are expensive.

As a viewer, I would never watch Lootera. It looks like a big bore!

And I am someone who has seen EV, Kahani and VD in theatres. There has to be some level of excitement/entertainment and interest (and a combination of all three).

Lootera doesn't have anything going for it, and we all know how important critics are.

i agree, lack of star value.. yes barfi and kahani worked, even film like jodha akbar worked, nd its all becos the leading actors had a greater reach to the audience..

may b d film lootera is very good, but un4tunately after heavy promotions also it averaged outta in d BO becos Ranveer doesnt have that appeal, eventhough sonakshi has quite reach, but as BW is usually male dominated and thus d film cudnt survive

Barfi vs Lootera:

One sharp contrast I noticed in both films was the public reaction in the cinema hall. While with Barfi everyone started off laughing right at the beginning with the opeing credits song Picture Shuru for Lootera the whole hall was quiet. Only time people laughed was when Varun tells his real name to Pakhi. You wont come out and highly recommend such a film to everyone. Rather you will say you MIGHT like it. I think at the end of the day people look for entertainment factor when they choose to go to a movie. While Barfi trailer highlighted the fun parts in the movie the Lootera trailer didnt. While that was being honest to what Lootera was as a film it kept the weekend numbers and subsequent WOM low for the film as compared to Barfi.

Lootera vs Kahaani:

Kahaani was on a completely different plane. Its genre and treatment were completely different from Lootera. Very tough to compare.

Having said all this I also think the orgasmic reaction BW goes into after every supposedly art film release is overdone. Everyone who praises another person's work has an agenda. So its best to know believe reviews but wait for actual public reviews. For Lootera most of the public were going W*F over the amount of unprecedented praise Lootera got. That got everyone's suspicions up.

and people like me who are not that interested in art films prefer watching in DVD rather than going to a hall !

What makes you say Barfi was the most unoriginal? I think it was the first of kind ever made.Even though there were plagiarism accusation,the story was quiet original and acting was brilliant. It stuck a chord with the audience and did well. Kahaani did well cos it was a good storyline and mystery surrounding it. Both movies were extremely entertaining with good star value ( PC,Ranbir,Vidya). WOM was exceptional for both I guess.

Don't know why Lootera didn't work. It was well made but the story was predictable.

Even YJHD the story was non existent but the movie was big on entertainment.

And also Kahani had Vidya, who is a huge star who has given big hits and carried movies on her own shoulders.

Sonakshi is no Vidya. She doesn't have that kind of star power or acting skills. Lets get real here. If Sonakshi was in Kahani, im damn sure it would flop. Yes the story was the main attraction but Vidya has some role too.
