The lack of a 'punch' ...the story although very beautifully told, is very predictable (almost like a 'been there, done that'). Maybe if the same story was told with a change of perspectives, or with a little more exploration into the darker layers of the main characters, the same plain-jane story could've become intriguing/thrilling. The impact of the movie would be greater, the creatives told it too simply that may have taken away the punch factor, making it too ordinary (even with the superb direction/acting).

Beautifully put Ania! 🤗

Yes that's the issue. It is too simple, too predictable which really takes away half the fun of watching a film. Its fine to be simple, but then you have to tell the story in such a way that people are still intrigued by what's going to happen next..you can't be as straightforward as you can for some other films. I hate to bring this in, but Anurag Basu in an interview post-Barfi apologized for making Barfi confusing with the kidnapping angle and shifts between past and present. He said though, that he had to do it that way because otherwise, the film would be too simple and people will lose interest/not connect as much. I think he was right and so are you when you say that if it was explored more with more layers to the characters it might have connected more. Motwane cut out 20-30 minute of the film so it would do better at the BO. While I think it was a very good decision, I wonder if there was more development of the characters in those 20-30 minutes.

Because looking pretty isn't enough.

Let me not take anything away from Lootera is terms of Cinimatography, it was excellence personified.

But honestly other than that, it had nothing going for it.

The story is too slow. There was no sense of excitement.

Only those who appreciate the art of movie making will like Lootera. It's not the movie for a random day out with friends and family. not everyone can appreciate the finer nuances of spectacular imagery simply because they aren't aware of it.

They see dim lighting, hear soft voices and think that it's too dark and the audio quality is bad not as a means of setting the ambience.

It's not aimed at the multiplex audience, this is aimed solely at the critics who are aware of finer details in the movie.

Because the film targeted a particular set of audience who are normally present in social media. And if you make a page and reveal half of the things in the trailer and songs, the interest dies. However, I think Vikramaditya did a fabulous job as a director and I have huge respect for Phantom and especially Balaji for opting to make such a story which would take a lot of time to click with the audience. And thank you Kekta Mai for not interfering anywhere in the film and letting it be Vikramaditya's vision.

I had realized after coming out of the theatre that this movie may find it difficult to cater into different minded people. But my mom who is a total masala and glossy movie lover loved it--for the old school film-making vibe that it managed to evoke on screen after a long time. The simple story-telling without melo-drama, the pace, songs, ambience created...

Honestly, I feel bad for the whole team otherwise all this BO numbers and stuff is a bouncer to me. And despite of the film not doing well, the actors tried something out of their comfort zone and prove the world about their versatility. Sonakshi came out as a surprise to the whole industry. Besides, there is a difference in the criticism and flak when a genuinely bad movie flops and movie that is not bad(despite of flaws) flops. And I can safely say that Lootera didn't belong to the former category. 👍🏼

Since we're going about predictably 😆

A friend of mine just mentioned that she studied The Last Leaf in school 😆 She said she wouldn't watch it for the world because she would probably end up framing a detailed answer essay in her mind. 😆

The WOM is actually pretty negative for this movie. 😆

Ranveer isnt much popular while no one takes Sonakshi seriously. As an audience, the cast itself seems ridiculous for me. So it failed to generate any interest for watching the movie.
The critical acclaim did give a heads up for the movie but my friends who watched the movie said 'they loved the movie but not sure others would like it'. This is again a very dicey stuff to say which further resulted in loss of interest in the movie.

Ello, Himani! Thank you! 🤗

Well, you see, with my tons of drama watching experience especially the Asian category, I've seen way too many stories. 😆 The thing is most of the stories share the same basics but what makes each drama/story different is its treatment and presentation. For e.g. the korean dramas last year were filled with time travel concept, one after the other but at the end, they all turned out quite different from each other because of the way the story was told and presented, the things/angles that were brought to focus were different in each of them. Lootera becomes simple because it portrays the story from a third person's perspective, even though its Sonakshi's character actually narrating. The visuals are like how a third person would see it (I dunno if I'm describing it right...) There are layers to the characters definitely, but they aren't shown or pondered much over...it starts to get planar, rather than developing the dimensions. For e.g. Ranveer's character was intriguing, I wanted to know more about him so I could connect to him, but all that wasn't shown/given much importance. Those same dimensions if explored, would've created an even better level of connection to the story and characters.

I'm not saying the creatives of Lootera were wrong to present their tale so simplistically. Every director has a different take on film making and story telling. Just that this may have hampered the mass reception that they'd have liked.
