Shortcut Romeo

Rating : 1/10
Release Date : 21st June, 2013
Time : 147 minutes
Director, Writer : Susi Ganesan; Music : Himesh Reshammiya
Starring : Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel, Puja Gupta

Some movies should never have been made, should've been rejected at script level. They are a waste of time, effort, scarce money and celluloid film (or digital bytes, as the case may be). This is one of them. Even several gratuitous flesh displays from both the leading women don't work.

Neil Nitin is a blackmailer, good for nothing, the type who can hit his brother on the head with a bottle just because he is served food first. He catches Ameesha Patel, a very rich man's wife, in the act with her husbands friend and figures its his passage to an easy life. He milks her for crores, buys a Jag, gets his friends over, goes around the world with them. He also amazingly has the brawn and mental acuteness to be able to beat off any toughies, other attempts on his life made by Ameesha and her lover in a vain attempt to get back the tape. But then, he falls in love. At first sight, of course (what other way is there ?). And wants her over money, if needed to make the choice.

Every character is flawed. Every emotion fake. The acting is universally bad, Neil Nitin standing out because he is a shade better than the rest. The music is awful. The production values ordinary. The jokes terrible. The fight sequences nothing that we haven't seen before. The only thing that saves the movie somewhat are the wildlife sequences in Kenya. There is this overall feel of a South Indian film, not surprising given that it's a remake of a Tamil film and is directed by (and even has him in a brief, laughable role) Susi Ganeshan.

Would recommend watching the government housing wala bleached yellow paint dry versus going for this one. Avoid at all costs…

'Shortcut Romeo'
U/A; Thriller
Director: Susi Ganesh
Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel, Puja Gupta
Ratings:

If a film is turning out to be more horrible than intended, the least its makers can do is to keep it short. And cut the audience some pain. However, the irony is clearly lost on those who came up with a title such as 'Shortcut Romeo'. Except for few moments — in fact, very few — this purported thriller is way off the target. All in all, other than one beautiful song, nothing seems to work in director Susi Ganesh's Bollywood debut.

Ameesha Patel and Neil Nitin Mukesh in 'Shortcut Romeo'

The only innovative credit that could be attributed to this awful film is it brings the term 'blackmail' back into fashion. After all, when was the last time you heard it in a Hindi film? Furthermore, the entire story keeps yo-yoing between one character's ability to blackmail the other; but not before weeping a bit here and gloating a bit there. The sheer scale of absurdity that follows such instances substitute as momentum required to call a drama thriller. Yes, there are tiny surprises in the middle but they don't hold ground for long.

Given his South background, Susi appears more interested in including as many action sequences as possible. Most of them are redundant, over-the-top and hardly contribute anything to the flow. The same is true about the futile song-and-dance routines. In any case, at more than 140 minutes, the screentime is dragged beyond logic. What else can explain a bunch of loafers spending somebody else's money in Kenya (to promote Kenya Airways?) and then literally crying to the protagonist that they want to go back home? Anyway, unconvincing performance is least of our worries here.

Neil Nitin Mukesh, after exhibiting craft in his last few outings, is sorely wasted as a guy who would do anything — other than work — to earn money. None of the two actresses in the lead role inspire much beyond fancy. For someone who was almost flawless in a challenging movie like 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha', Ameesha Patel resorts to hamming here. Without her makeup, Puja Gupta comes across as a better actress.

It's hard to believe that they took this endeavour to Cannes when there's not much to even take home.

Shortcut Romeo Is Mega Disaster

Saturday 22nd June 2013 10.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Shortcut Romeo is one of the biggest disasters of the year. The collections are simply horrific across the board with multiplexes collecting INR 2000-3000 each.

There are many films that collect this low but they are films like Meri Shaadi Karao, Dekha Jo Pehli Baar, I Don't Luv You etc, basically all films that have practically zero awareness which is not the case for a film like Shortcut Romeo.

The collections of Shortcut Romeo in Delhi/UP are not even 5 lakhs which tells a sad story. Raanjhanaa has grossed more than 5 lakhs in Lucknow alone.

The all India collections of Shortcut Romeo will hardly touch 25 lakhs nett.
