Why couldn't EV & Vidya's films spark off change?

I don't get it! Why aren't other older actresses geting good work despite their talent and fanbase?

If English Vinglish did so well critically and commercially with no other frills and simply on merit of its lead's talent and good script, if Vidya Balan succeeded with likes of TDP and Kahani, then why are filmmakers not coming up with good stories for older actresses?

We don't know if Sridevi is doing any other film. Madhuri is still into TV and item songs - frozen in that dancing girl mode (Dedh Ishqiya should be worth looking forward to, but when is it actually releasing?) Vidya's the only one whose films are in offing.

There are really talented actresses like Tabu who still look good, can reinvent themselves and also have no problems with intimate scenes. Why aren't they getting work?

Rani either does useless films like Aiyya or plays supporting roles in Khan films. Kajol and Aishwarya are talented, good looking but are only waiting for right offers. Karisma is gorgeous and talented but only made a fool of herself in that stupid Dangerous Ishq. Preity Zinta is still stuck in 2000s - not trying to reinvent herself.

If audience has shown openness to different content and accepts older actresses and multiplexes are growing - making non-traditional films more commercially viable than before, then why more films aren't being made with older actresses?

Is it all industry's fault? Or are actresses also at fault for being stuck in past glory and not reinventing themselves with time?

What's your take?

I think reinventing yourself according to the time and dynamics of bollywood is very important.

These actresses will only work in women oriented movies if they actually get a good script...I feel there might not be dearth of scripts that have strong women roles but its the risk that the production houses are not willing to take by supporting such a project.

All big production houses are right now chasing the 100 crore club facade...they aren't really keen in taking risks as of yet...yes Balaji made TDP but I don't think Ekta will take another women oriented script if it doesn't have the right masala...like skin show, witty one liners etc.

So I cannot blame the actresses because they need backing from a good production house for a strong script...they probably get offers from unknown production houses with women oriented roles but why should they risk their career when they know that this movie won't have the required promotion or hype as compared to a YRF, Dharma or Balaji

I doubt producers would put money on Heroine oriented roles which doesn't have the guarentee that they would get the money back.. Vidya has a loaded BF before/Husband producer who can get her the scripts and the money..

The question has been asked a lot of times, but the answer has not changed, unfortunately. Its all the BO of BO. 😆
*BO= Body Odour
**BO= Box Office.

It is a risk/reward scenario. The risk of casting an old actress is far greater than the potential reward. Bollywood has grown a lot over the past few years. However, the aam junta still gravitates towards kitsch. It is still a male dominated industry. Women still tend to be perceived as pretty faces and not lead material. There is a dearth of men willing to let the female dominate the movie.

English Vinglish, Kahaani, TDP had the benefit of good stories, good directors and a good cast willing to play subordinate to the leading lady. Very few filmmakers have the talent, ability and foresight to put together such a formidable combination. Even fewer have the cojones to take risks and go against the tide.

I am not saying it that it's a bad thing but very few will be willing to shell money on heroine oriented films. Heroine oriented film still doesn't garner the revenue that it does with superstar films. Paa was not really meant to be a heroine oriented film but Vidya managed to shine in it. Come to think of it, UTV is always behind Vidya's film and it correlates...

that's just an outdated thought.

if a budget is shoestring and quiet easy to recover, and u have a story that u can create enough buzz for, heroine movies can work too. noone i mean noone expected NOKJ to do well when it came out. but it did. the problem with our producers is that they don't want to think out of the box. even if Vidya has stood out with her films. she will find hard to remain in the same league five years from today. sexism in bollywood will not leave her. and English Vinglish is not sridevi's comeback. it was an exceptional film. still nobody is interested to sign her. the mentality sucks here a lot that's why the industry is considered regressive

Why can't they make more "exceptional" films like English Vinglish and Kahani?

LOL @ comments on the man behind Vidya's success! 😆

I partly blame actresses also for remaining stuck in their past, paying tribute to their own old famous characters/films and not giving audience anything new. I mean what the hell were Dangerous Ishq and Ishkq in Paris?

I admit audience still wants heroine to be pretty and "fresh". But there is also audience for older actresses' work.

Why actors with weak BO still get work as leads and survive despite flops?

Okay industry is male dominated but it is a shame that powerful females like Ekta Kapoor too aren't doing much to carry on the change despite tasting success with TDP.

^ she didn't make TDP to bring a change for women oriented films. she made it for sensationalism. its another thing it was carried by a talented actress. other wise any other actress could have brought such criticism that ekta would have got a shock of her life.
