There was a time when certain films were hailed as being too "classy", too "urban" or too "niche-appealing" for the audience in India. These films rarely found good box office results.
Take for example, Shah Rukh Khan's film SWADES. Today, the film is remembered as a classic, and is considered by many as being one of SRK's most memorable films. But, during the film's release, the film did very poorly at the box office, because of it's niche appeal!
I feel that it was in 2012 when things really started to change for the Hindi film industry. Films that makers never even thought of making before were now being made, and to great results! Films like VICKY DONOR, KAHAANI, and BARFI, which were "different" films, were hugely successful at the box office. I am sure, that if these same films released a few years earlier, they would have flopped at the box office! 2012 showed that India has grown, in terms of being intellectual. There has been an expansion of urban people in India. This has benefitted the mutliplex business in a big way.
This Friday's release, GO GOA GONE, is one of those films that dares to be different. This one involves zombies. There was another zombie film earlier this year called RISE OF THE ZOMBIE but with all honesty and no disrespect, who was even aware that such a film existed? In a sense, GO GOA GONE is the first major zombie film.
GO GOA GONE's trailer was launched a while back , and the trailer received huge appreciation which is definitely a good sign. Opening wise the film should open well. Saif Ali Khan's presence , the novelty factor and the trailer of the film being liked, will ensure a good opening at multiplexes.
The film's business will be best at multiplexes. The film has been given an A certificate which will restrict family audiences from coming which will restrict it's business a little. But I feel that the urban youth (young adults 18 and up) will lap up the film.
The film has reportedly been made on a low budget which is a good thing. The film has also reportedly been sold to distrubutors at a high price, which mean the film will have to collect a lot in order for the distrubutors to recover/make profits.
My Box Office Predictions for GO GOA GONE:
