The young Kapoor scion has been on a high with the variety of challenges that he has accepted as an actor from Rajneeti to Rockstar, and then as Barfi. Ranbir Kapoor has made a strong mark in the industry which goes beyond his illustrious lineage. With his next film, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani all set for release, Ranbir chooses to answer some questions on his career, success & former flame Deepika Padukone.
Q. Isn't 30 too late an age to get married?
Earlier I used to be in a rush to get married. But Ayan Mukherji taught me to be calm & settled. He told me to focus on my career, do some good work, meet more people and then get settled. Today I believe we must not set deadlines for ourselves to get married.
Q. A traditional hero in Bollywood has names like Raj, Rahul, Prem. While you have been donning names like Jordan, Barfi & now Bunny! Is it a conscious decision to have peculiar names for your characters?
It's the story writer or the the director who finalizes the names of the characters. (Laughs) I don't choose to be a Barfi or a Ladoo. But I'm happy that my characters have catchy names that are easy for people to remember. I think my name in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Bunny is cute & easy to remember. May be Ayan named me so cause he thought that I look like Bugs Bunny.
Q. After doing defined characters like Jordan & Barfi, does it get easier to essay the role of Bunny?
No! I think portraying a Jordan or a Barfi was easier with a defined character that goes with the imagination of the film. But playing an urban youth on the other hand, that Bunny is, is extremely difficult as the character is not defined. You have to be spontaneous and real so that the youth can relate to the character. Being real is the toughest type of acting.
Q. While Barfi made it as India's official entry at the Oscars, it failed to win any National Award. Does that upset you?
We had no expectations while making Barfi. We got a lot of love from people. Making it to the Oscar's as India's offcial entry was exciting. But even there it is a difficult process with a voting on 100 films, only 5 films make it to the final nominations. But that encouraged us to do better. It was definitely disappointing to not win a National award, but Irfan won it and he delivered one of the finest performances of the year.
Q. Was working with Deepika again a difficult decision?
Deepika & I have worked together in the beginning of our careers. We were new and finding our place in the industry. Today, we have moved on as individuals. Deepika and I are not one package. But there was no awkwardness working with her. And I'm really happy to work with her today; she has grown immensely as an actor. She is brilliant. In fact both of us were worried for Ayan.
Q. So can we expect the same chemistry from Ranbir-Deepika on screen?
Honestly speaking, chemistry between two characters depends on how it is written by the writer & implemented by the director. We as actors can only bring in hard work and dedication. On a humorous note, Deepika and I share a great history, chemistry and biology. And we hope you all enjoy it.
