SPOILERS AHEAD
A Mumbai film that sets out to make a point
about something that is wrong with the
world around us often ends up losing its
way in a maze of preachy pomposity. Not so
Jolly LLB. It knows exactly where it is going.
Despite a somewhat thin storyline, or
probably on account of it, the film stays on
course for the most part. It addresses a
serious theme – the anomalies inherent in
India's judicial system – in a jocular manner
but steers well clear of unwarranted
flippancy.
Jolly LLB has its heart in the right place. And
it's a heart that is backed by a ticking mind
and a responsive conscience.
The film, which relies on both humour and
pathos for impact, is buoyed by a clutch of
outstanding performances and a directorial
style that is marked by admirable lightness
of touch.
Writer-director Subhash Kapoor keeps it
simple and shipshape. He pulls no punches
in poking fun at the loopholes in the
country's justice delivery system. But he
does not let the critique degenerate into
objectionable mockery.
Nowhere does he seek to call the audience's
attention to either the technical aspects of
the film or the cinematic elements that
constitute its spine.
He lets the screenplay do all the arguing on
his behalf. The writing holds up rather well –
it has legs strong enough not to give way
under the weight of the 'big picture' that
Jolly LLB seeks to project through a plain
David-versus-Goliath skirmish in the court of
a judge who is always a step ahead of the
duo.
A cynical legal eagle, Tejinder Rajpal (Boman
Irani), locks horns with a small-town eager
beaver, Jagdish Tyagi, alias Jolly, who is a
Johnny-come-lately in a tearing hurry to
make a mark in the district and sessions
court of Delhi.
A spoilt brat, at the wheels of an over-
speeding Land Cruiser, has mowed down a
whole lot of people sleeping on a pavement.
But thanks to his affluent and influential
family's money power and the
aforementioned topnotch lawyer's
insuperable legal acumen, the boy is
acquitted by the court.
The struggling eponymous advocate is a guy
who is down on luck. He has just moved
from hometown Meerut to the big city in
pursuit of fame and wealth but is nowhere
near achieving his ambition.
Not averse to adapting to the wily ways of
the legal frat, Jolly figures out a way to
attract instant media spotlight. He files a PIL
seeking a reinvestigation into the Land
Cruiser hit-and-run case.
A mightily riled Rajpal throws all he has into
the ring and his means are more foul than
fair.
Jolly, on his part, has to dig deep into the
reserves of his Meerut-bred tenacity to stand
up to the bullying, both psychological and
physical, of his more seasoned opponent.
Like so much else in this country, this legal
tussle assumes the dimensions of an
unequal clash between the haves and the
have-nots. So it is easy for the audience to
decide who to root for – the underdog of
course.
The director however refrains from settling
for a simple reductionist approach to the
good-lawyer-pitted-against-bad-lawyer
drama and adds several believable layers to
the narrative.
Jolly has a schoolteacher-girlfriend back in
Meerut and this no-nonsense damsel
(Amrita Rao) is his bellwether when he is in
moral distress and needs course correction.
Our man also has a steady supporter in the
aged owner of the courthouse cafeteria
(Ramesh Deo).
The latter is another hapless victim of a
system that is often manipulated to deny
justice to those that don't have the
necessary means and connections, those
that are doomed to sleep on pavements and
are run over by the cars of those who
couldn't care less.
The plot is also littered with allusions to the
realities of a law enforcement structure that
is steeped in corruption.
The most notable of these is a sharply
satirical scene in which a creepy cop called
Ram Gopal Varma (Sanjay Mishra in a brief
but crucial cameo) auctions a plum posting
in an old Delhi police station as a host of
tainted officers seated before him bid for
the transfer.
It is difficult to imagine this film without the
first-rate pivotal performances by Arshad
Warsi and Boman Irani. The two
consummate actors match each other step
for step.
Even when the courtroom exchanges touch
emotional tipping point and threaten to turn
overtly shrill, restraint remains their stock in
trade.
But, equally, Jolly LLB wouldn't have been
half the film it is without the sterling show
that Saurabh Shukla, as the all-knowing
Judge Tripathi, puts up. His is a delightfully
effortless performance that etches out the
core of the satire.
Barring the off-kilter musical score, which is
completely out of sync with the
predominantly naturalistic drift of the film,
Jolly LLB is a jolly good film.

Jhooth Boliya
Mere Toh Law Lag Gaye
Daru Peeke Nachna
Story: Lawyer Jagdish Tyagi 'Jolly' dreams of making it big like his advocate idol Tejinder Rajpal - will Jolly sell out too?

Movie Review: So, Jolly LLB isn't a comedy - despite jokes about 'appeal' spelled as 'apple' and Jolly telling Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists he's Maskhar-e-Taiba, Jolly LLB is a serious movie, showcasing the arrogance of the rich, the helplessness of the poor and the corruption of the law.

Jolly (Warsi) is a struggling mofussil lawyer, itching for big-city deals. He convinces girlfriend Sandhya (Rao, attractive and effective in her hot schoolmarm-avataar) and hits Delhi's District and Sessions Court where his 'office' is a desk under the sky. Jolly flounders about until he meets the super-polished, super-successful Tejinder Rajpal (Irani), arguing the 'victimization' of his rich client Rahul Dewan, whose Land Cruiser's run over six labourers on a footpath. An eye-witness appears - Jolly files a PIL. What happens when Rajpal replies using cash?

Rather like its protagonist, Jolly LLB's first half meanders a bit, featuring a clumsy 'daaru' song and a Meerut that mysteriously hides - but boy, does its second half hammer things home. With crackling scenes between Jolly versus Rajpal (Irani deadly smooth, like velvet soaked in blood) and Rajpal versus judge Tripathi (Shukla in a brilliant show, hysterically yelling, "Gavel kidhar rakha hai?!", thundering at Rajpal, "Sit down! Ye mera court hai, aapka club nahin!"), the action becomes electric. Drama builds as Jolly (Warsi, highly endearing and impressive) finds his voice. Jolly's astonishment at Rajpal's callousness - "Footpath sone ke liye nahin hai" - Jolly responding, "Footpath gaadi chalane ke liye bhi nahin hai!", mirrors the aam aadmi's bewilderment and determination to fight.

Jolly LLB works because of its bigger point - decency is for all and worth fighting for. Using bittersweet satire and plot twirls, the film shows corruption even used against the corrupt. Despite that weaker first half, this truly becomes a Jolly good show.

NOTE: You will not like this movie if you don't enjoy courtroom dramas with moral twists.

Jolly LLB

Cast: Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Amrita Rao

Direction: Subhash Kapoor

Rating: 4 Star Rating: Recommended 4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended

Jolly good, how Bollywood isn't afraid to cock a snook anymore. The satire as a genre may not still be an obvious saleable bet but the film industry is quietly acquiring a relish. It took us three decades since Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro to rediscover the satire with films such asPeepli [Live], Phas Gaye Re Obama and last week's Saare Jahan Se Mehnga. Jolly LLBis a great addition to the list.

Subhash Kapoor shot to fame with his caustic comment on global recession in his last release, Phas Gaye Re Obama. Three years on, his new film is gunning for the legal eagles. Jolly LLBaims at laying bare the foibles that define our judiciary.

At the centre of Kapoor's screenplay is Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi), Jolly to friends and near ones. Frustrated that his career as a lawyer seems headed nowhere in smalltown Meerut, Jolly moves to Delhi.

His brainwave for quick fame is inspired by a real-life incident. Revealing shades of the Sanjeev Nanda BMW hit-and-run case of 1999 (which director Kapoor had incidentally covered in his days as a court reporter), the script sees Jolly filing a PIL to reopen the case.

The catch is that he finds himself pitted against advocate Rajpal (Boman Irani), the biggest and craftiest lawyer around. Jolly must fight against all odds if he has to win.

For a satire to work, it needs a solid moral anchor. Jolly LLB finds it in the corruptible courtrooms the film so wittily portrays, as well as in the way its hero has been imagined.

Arshad's Jolly revels in a tangle of contradictions. He is a good man at heart, fun-loving by nature, and yet the frustration of not achieving what he believes he can is prone to make him bend ethics. Arshad lives his protagonist with trademark comic timing, suitably underplaying hints of melodrama the role calls for. Jolly is a lovable character and Arshad nuances him well.

The film's underlining comment, though, comes alive as much riding its hero as it does through its antihero. Boman Irani slips brilliantly into the boots of Rajpal. His is the character that drives the film's message and Boman brings it alive with seasoned assurance, blending smug villainy with humour.

Writer-director Kapoor must have been aware his biggest strength would lie in setting up showdown scenes between Arshad and Boman. The film thrives on their antagonistic chemistry.

Their face-off scenes are superb, propped by effective dialogues. If the right lines are a key to successful satire, Kapoor comes up with some whacky ones here.

The script could have avoided giving the hero a mandatory love angle (Amrita Rao) and two mundane songs. Overall, however, Jolly LLBimpresses for the way it avoids all frills while giving you an enjoyable watch. The film is great endorsement for new-age mainstream, along with Kai Po Che, Special 26 and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster so far this year.
