Karan Johar: 'I celebrate women every day'

Bollywood stars have been paying personal tribute to women to mark International Women's Day.
In an interview with Filmfare, Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan and Abhishek Kapoor spoke of the role women play in their lives and in society.
"I never understood this man-woman debate. It is very childish to say women are strong, women are creative," said Johar. "We all know that. But there will always be a debate in India.
"For me, woman is my mother. My mother is my inspiration. The reason I'm doing what I am, is because of my mother. My mother is my everything. For me a woman means my mother and my mother is everything to me. That's why I respect all women. Women as friends are better, as a parent they are stronger. And when you are emotionally stronger everything falls in place.
"I celebrate women every day, I don't understand celebrating womanhood on one day just like Valentine's Day. Why should we celebrate love on one day? Love is around you. There are a few women who have made a difference in my life. They are my mother, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Gauri Khan. They are all strong women and are very important to me."
Student of the Year star Dhawan commented: "Firstly, I'd like to wish all the women out there a happy Women's Day. Today is an important day. It should be celebrated in a country like India where so many women have sacrificed their life fighting for equality. When it comes to films, my favourite on-screen character has to be Mother India."
Arjun Kapoor said: "Women ought to be celebrated each and every day. However, I think this one day is every man's way of saying thank you. Thank you for bearing with our idiosyncrasies and standing by us in spite of it all. But most importantly, thank you for making us better men..."
Other stars took to Twitter to mark the occasion.
Priyanka Chopra tweeted: "Dreams Passion, Talent, Courage...we have all it takes to rule the world! Happy Super-Womens Day!!!! (Why should boys have all the fun??)"
Anupam Kher said: "Happy Women's Day will make more sense the day we actually think of their happiness, dignity and respect. Men need to change. Women are fine."
Bipasha Basu wrote: "The theme for International Women's Day 2013 is 'A promise is a promise'. Time for action to end violence against women!"
Shah Rukh Khan recently described women as "the backbone of Bollywood".
Amitabh Bachchan has pledged his support to Breakthrough, a domestic violence awareness campaign aimed at men.
