Delhi gang-rape accused must be given chance to reform: Rahul Bose

NEW DELHI: Actor activist Rahul Bose on Friday came out in favour of giving the perpetrators of last year's Delhi gang rape a chance to reform and create a "gender warrior" among them.

"... We have to ask ourselves of the five or six ofthe rapists of the December 16 is there anyone who wants to change, who wants to reform ... Nobody is saying about commuting any sentence, the sentence stands as it is but while it stands can we create a gender warrior among them?" he asked.

The actor was participating in a year-long " Ring The Bell" campaign launched by NGO Breakthrough which seeks to mobilize one million men around the world to commit to taking concrete action to end violence against women.

"If anybody is open to reaffirmation do we have it in us to subvert our patriarchal mindset and tell them that we are ready to confer even the right to reform to you even if there is such a massive public upsurgeagainst you," said Bose.

The actor further said,"If we have to move further civilizational as a society, if we have to evolve as a civilization further beyond the boundaries of India then we have to look at forgiveness."

The 23-year girl, who was gang-raped by six men in a moving bus on December 16, died in a Singapore hospital after battling for life.

The campaign "One million men. One million promises to end violence against women", simultaneously launched today in six cities across the world including New York, Johannesburg and Rio, pledges to connect people through social media to discuss and find new solutions to end violence.

Stressing on the needs to challenge the habits, norms and behaviour that perpetuates violence, 'Breakthrough' vice president Sonali Khan said, "We are calling on men and boys around the world to take a stand against violence against women by making a concrete promise that they keep.

"With men as partners, we can build a world in which women are respected- and in which all of us live freely and without fear. Each action will add up to one million; one million will start the change," she added.

Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar said, "I am excited to be part of a campaign that promotes deeper dialogue and therefore understanding to help bring about a groundswell of change in the tragic global epidemic of violence against women. It's important to engage men in this dialogue as this violence against women is not exclusively a women's issue.

He's a believer of rehabilitation over retribution, or so it seems. He doesn't claim to cut their sentence short neither is he defending them, instead he's speaking of long term consequences. Is anyone willing to change? Change their patriarchal mindsets to move forward? He brings up valid points, but the brutality of this case is so strong, that I doubt any of the rapists and murderers involved in this are capable of reforming. But to other men that are violent/abusive/sexist really have to change. We have to look at the scenario in totality...is death or life sentence a deterrent to the sexual harassment that women across the world face? I do not think so, because we still hear of brutality on women daily.

I don't know about "gender warrior" but yeah, otherwise nothing wrong. It's not about commuting the sentence or any such thing. But in of itself most justice systems are also meant to be about rehabilitation.

They can have life in prison, and still reform as they are in prison till death. Or not. They may never reform. However, there's nothing wrong with what he's saying. I commend him for having the guts to speak out.

Second chances and reforms should be given depending on the case... This was not just a rape but a brutal murder... Hope Rahul knows that the girl was not just raped but brutally murdered and thrown alongside the road to die a painful death... Second chances to these murderers? No way...

^^ Rahul Bose doesn't say anything about second chances.

And the TOI article doesn't mention second chance either. This is the title.

In theory there is nothing wrong with what he's saying. Basically all he's saying is punish them, but make an effort to find out if any of them has it in them to change; and if one of them does have that capacity then aid them in reforming - because that would make a strong statement against the national patriarchal mindset.

The problem is for a lot of people this is an emotinal thing. The general public can't think about this practically because it's far too close to home. It's a ticky situation I'm sure most people look at this with the 'what if that was my sister, mother, daughter, wife' mindset (I'm one of them), and that makes it difficult to forgive and think about the 'greater good'.

With this case and the outrage, no one has really looked upon the long term consequences and b/c of that we are still in same position as far as the topic is concerned. Really, we do not want this brave girl's death to go to waste ( which may very well happen). As a society, we need to come up with ways that forces men and women to alter the way they think. The rooted patriarchal system will be very hard to modify, there will be resistance and more so from women due to the effects of it. There needs to be policies and institutions created to educate and inform. I really do not believe death penalty is a deterrent to any sort of crimes, and statistics have proven that over and over. The man that wants to rape will rape or murder regardless of the consequences. But reformation and education can actually attempt to create that much needed change in men and women in order to move us forward, rather than backward. Sadly, the Delhi Rape case has just become another issue for the corrupt politicians to play around with and not really produce any substantial change.

Just because Rahul Bose chooses not to go with the herd does not make him dubious. He's not defending the criminals, because that should not be meddled with. You do a crime, you are aware of it, you face the consequences.

I don't think he is saying anything wrong precisely

But the brutality with which the poor girl was raped... will garner no kind of sympathy whatsoever for these men...but yea I do feel that if any one of them is ready to accept their fault and do some cognitive work in spreading awarness against rape, then by all means...they should do something useful of their life until punished

I am against death penalty...its easy way out..i am more for life imprisonment in general jail...those people will be raped whenever they drop a soap...

But in this scenario i believe the girls parent need a closure and i think death penalty will be what they will be looking for...

I am in favor of neutering the juvenile though...his DNA should be stopped propagating further...

Its easy to say everyone deserves a second chance and should be able to make right what they have wronged. But is it possible to make right everything?

There is no way a murderer or a rapist can undo his misdoings. Its an cognitive act which of course deserves retribution but beyond that too, forgiving the person and his acts is just plain appalling and impermissible. I think the person should be guilt ridden till he dies and made to suffer rather than given death penalty. Death Penalty is the easy way out for them.

Some do deserve to start their life again and if their crime is petty or pardonable. That said should they again be included in the society seems debatable. Cos old habits die hard and not all mental issues can be treated. You just have to institutionalized them and I don't think Indian Govt has the means to take care of all the mentally sick ppl in the prison.
