DOUBLE STANDARDS IN BOLLYWOOD

Hello everyone!

So, Valentines day just passed (Happy Valentines Day, btw) and my friend and I were talking about how we think Shahrukh Khan and Kajol are by far the most romantic on-screen couple in Bollywood.

Then our conversation took a turn - discussing the double-standards in the Bollywood industry, especially how older actors are still considered top leading and earning superstars in Bollywood (Amir Khan, SRK, Akshay) and they are constantly paired with much younger actresses.

However, older actresses are not given similar opportunities (they don't act opposite younger, good-looking actors) and have been taken over by younger actresses.

I am just curious ... what are your thoughts on this matter?

yeah its very male centric. Female actors don't last very long. I guess it represents Indian society as a whole.

This issue has been disussed and beaten to death on this forum...

The movies are a reflection of our society...They go by the norms of the society...There have been instances where movies have tried to break the regular norm...and have flunked badly ...and recieved flak...The husband/BF ...is supposed to be older than the woman is the generally accepted norm of the society...now in BW we take to the extreme when male actors act opposite women who are 20+ years younger than them...Is that right...no ...I would love to see them act opposite the women more compatible with their age...but it so happens that in BW men folk can go on playing the romantic lovey dovey heroes until they are sixty...while the women folk have a very small shelf life...cause in BW we pay more attention to the looks than talent...but hopefully things will change...We just saw an almost 50 year old Sri make a terrific comeback...so who knows...I for one would love to see these 45+ heroes in mature love stories...even if the actress is older than them...it would work for me...
