An actor's appeal for silver screen

I was thinking about some actors who'd tried hand at films but failed. And are now successful on TV and some even made good comeback in movies as character actors (whereas initially they didn't get work even as hero's sidekick).

I want to know what really determines an actor's appeal for silver screen? How do some average or below average looking actors make it in movies yet some very good looking and smart ones struggle to make it on TV also? How and why is it that some actors, despite their flops, so so looks and weaknesses keep getting work till they improve themselves and eventually make a mark, while some actors are thrown out at one failure?

A Ronit Roy has been a rage on TV since a decade and recently won accolades for Udaan. But the same guy was never accepted in films. Not even as a sidekick.
Milind Soman was a rage as a model and his music videos were also popular but he neither made it in films nor on TV (his TV shows were major flops).

Shatrughan Sinha was said to be ugly with all those scars on his face and large eyes. He was quite skinny initially and didn't even know how to use his voice properly. Yet he got work as a villain and later even made it as a hero? With time he was able to hone his skills too and seemed fine but he was never awesome to begin with.

Kumar Gaurav appeared in few successful films but was out of the picture soon. Why such failure despite having looks, connections and initial success?

Amitabh wasn't liked much initially and gave almost a dozen flops before making it big with Zanjeer. He was never as charismatic as he became later. How come he kept getting so many chances? All his mannerisms, style of dialogue delivery etc. he developed later with time. He was given time and chances...but many others are written off in one flash!

If an Aamir could make it despite childish looks, less height, immature acting (in beginning!), dozen flops, interfering attitude and problems with directors - then why not others? Say, someone like Sachin or Vivek Mushran?

How come nakhras of some stars end their career (Vivek Oberoi) whereas others continue despite their eccentricities?
(Aamir had also rubbed Chopras wrong way in Darr controversy and fought with bigshot editors in media, Salman has had issues with media too, SRK's attitude was criticised by Subhash Ghai who'd even gone to the extent of calling him a dog, he'd fought with journalists even as a newcomer)

What makes someone a hero material? How come someone like, say, a Vivek Mushran only left to play a balding dad in TV soaps today when he'd debuted with a film as big as Saudagar and was hailed as new age Dev Anand, a new romantic hero?

(P.S. - I quoted names of actors and films ONLY as examples to try and explain intent of my topic. No offense to any star or degrading their careers! Thanks.)

Not only heroes but even I wonder how some become character actors while others do not even manage that.

Also, how come some keep getting work (like Sunil Shetty, Ajay Devgan) and later at some point they strike it big (Ajay's fortunes rose up since Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha and way more with Golmaal series and Singham).

How is it that some average or below average looks/voice/personality guys make it in movies whereas others do not, even if they have talent/looks?

IDK...i think Its to do wid...ones intelligence...self confidence situations...intentions...motivations...oppurtunity...excelling on tht oppurtunity...good heart...hard work...and FATE..wid a bit of LUCK... 😃

Thrs no exact answer...i believ Noone gets anything before time...and gets more than wht thy r expected or deserved to get...

The concept of casting couche is overrated though...only happens in low profile places..Like Katrina..obv she got films bcs of Salamn and her own intelligence...Miss Deepika...after series of flops and disastrous acting..now..she is good..after cocktail...she is still there... Actually find her mysterious..bcs she doesnt hv connections still...Sonam is a star kid but she is still not in the top league...Sonakshi...gets films bcs of Sallu as well..but she cant make it into the top league...Priyanka..again..its a miracle how she survived after so many flops...

Mr Imran Khan..his career ws over till mammu jaan gave him Delhi Belly..and JoHAR is constantly keepinh him employed wid Dharma prod films...still he is unnoticed...

Shahid Kapoor..he has his niche but somethhing just doesnt seel to click...maybe he lacks freeshness..
And many others...actualy..

It's not just mere good looks but a mixture of luck (lots of it), movie choices, acting skills, hard work, personality etc. X factor is an added bonus to that package

When these elements sync at the right time, wonders happen to an actor's career especially in silver screen. We see so many people trying their luck but very few survive. Apart from these facts, off screen personality and sex appeal matters a lot in Bollywood. That's where an actor's fan base comes in

There is nothing like hero material-the substantial amount of variety seen in the people being cast as lead actors over the years has made me believe that there is no formula!!

there's so much that happens in the industry that we aren't privy too-nepotism, casting couch, lobbying etc. We do have a vague idea but nobody exactly knows what the real deal is or how people are cast!!

The audience is forgiving and the audience is susceptible. I will forget the 1000 mistakes made by X and the 989 stupid movies done by him if he does that one good movie. Also the audience gets emotionally attached. This is not a recent phenomena-sadiyon se chalta aa raha hai aur chalta rahega.

When a face is thrown at me for the nth time, the amount of familiarity will increase and I might start finding that face appealing(at least someone in a population of a billion people(all with different tastes) will)! Why those faces are thrown at us repeatedly is something I don't know- the industry chooses who they will accept into it's fold and it has it's own reasons!

I'd say its a bunch of different things, specially in Bollywood ( maybe in other countries its different).. its that one powerful person backing you and keeps pushing you despite flops. Who knows if Ronit had an Yash Chopra backing him, he might have been cast in some good projects and taken his career else where. Also, there is luck, your personality, and now a days media and how they perceive/portray you. Thats why you have Sid, Varun, Ranbir, Imran, whose popularity despite doing one film or a few flop films shoots up or stays the same.

Yeah luck. But I wonder how do some actors keep getting chances to improve themselves whereas others get kicked out? Some people who were kicked out, later made it huge on TV. It means they did have potential in them. How come no one gave them a chance to prove themselves in films?

I even see how Jimmy Shergill is a superstar of sorts in Punjabi cinema but hasn't even been able to get recognition as a character actor in Bollywood.

Many other mannequin guys are still getting work in films while Milind Soman couldn't make it as actor in films or TV. (I think he is better than John!)
