An open Letter to Salman Khan

Dear Salman Khan,

At the outset, let me begin by saying that I have never been a fan of any of your movies. I have found your acting extremely nonchalant. I mean, it's like no big deal for you. I wondered how you pulled it off. To top it, you have been in the industry since 1989, over 23 years.

No mean feat.

To be honest, I always thought of your brother Arbaaz as a better actor. In fact, I still do. Brother had a terrific debut with DARAAR. Absolutely awesome and I wondered why his career never took off. I can almost hear him echo cricketer Vinod Kambli's quote, ''Bhai took the elevator, while I had to take the stairs!''

Eight years ago, when I met Brother at his Vida Apartments and posed this question to him about your status, he told me, ''There has to be something about Salman for him to be around for so long. He is a star. No question about that.'' He also pointed out something very pertinent... about your dedication.

I was still not convinced.

Then came WANTED and I began to see what I could not see earlier. That you are actually having fun. I mean, you are not trying too hard to be what you do not want to be. It is like, take it or leave it. This is what I really am.

And this is exactly the quality that has endeared you to your legion of fans cutting right across the country and I dare say in other countries where Bollywood reigns as well.

What is also exemplary is your giving attitude. I'm sure no one likes to 'tom tom' the fact that they are into charity. But now, Being Human is so phenomenally huge that you cannot ignore it and go the route you have chosen. I also know that this is not an ego trip but a genuine effort to help those in need.

I have been privy to the fact that your dad looks after around 500 adivasis in Panvel. I also know that your dad meticulously screens every request letter, be it for an operation or for simple medication. The genuineness of the request is of prime importance. You do not like to be conned. That itself is a huge effort!

Today, Being Human is not just a store or a T-Shirt; it is much more. It is actually helping us understand that we all can be humans and reach out to the less fortunate in our own little way. We do not have to be crorepatis to do that.

More importantly, you have cut across class barriers.

You will see a street kid flaunting a Being Human T-Shirt, a middle-class youth as well as a corporate executive. And all could be at the same street at the same time and still not flinch! There is no shame in flaunting this tag. And this is a huge shift in thinking.

You are now not only helping out on your own steam but also throwing the platform wide open for others wanting to help out with your Foundation.

I have one request. Just like your T-shirts are a huge rage; can you have Mandhana design a multi-purpose carry bag that can be used for all shopping purposes? This way, I am sure, most will discard plastic. Who knows, manufacturing of plastic bags may soon be a thing of the past. Also, if you can have Being Human ambulances at nominal costs to the common man...

This is just the beginning; I know that a few years down the line, A Being HumanHospital will dot the Mumbai horizon.

The recent news in a business paper about Rupert Murdoch and his Indian entertainment empire inking an Rs 450-500 Crore five-year satellite-television deal with you comes as no surprise to me. This is a first in the annals of Bollywood. You have surpassed even your own expectations. I mean, you long ago crossed the Rs 10-lakh mark you set out to earn.

The seed for this was sown by your parents a long time ago!

The Gospel in Luke, chapter 6, verse 38 says is all: ''Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.'

God will never let you out give Him!

I'm now a Being Human fan. Maybe someday, when you do give a dhamekedarperformance, I might add your name after Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Arbaaz Khan to my list of favourite actors!

Sincerely
Martin D'Souza

Well, nothing seems to be realistic in your comments. I call it comments because this seems to be more as comments and not an article in any way. What rubbish.
The man is Salman Khan, our hunk, the smart soul, the charmer who simply does everything the way it has to be these days. We are not surprised by you but many others are also thinking on the same line that how is that fan following of Salman grew over the years. What is exceptional.
Mr Tomy, to start with, no one is going tom tom on the charities he does. Writing a book would not be sufficient for that. Salman is a born star and makes it to the throne simply naturally. Whereas others strive hard to even be on the same track. Many have lost their image, have become idiotic comedians, extras and what not.
But if you see Salman's graph of image building, he's never lost the charisma that he had. Amazingly, he still persisits the same. That one innocent smile will win millions of heart anyday. Salman started as a great actor, his first few movies were block busters. So a fan base started for him. His best till date is still 'Maine Pyar kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun'. The expectations grew in everyone like anything but then came a team of producer friends who deviated him from the throne. Their directors were also friends who used to say Okay for a single take. It took many years for our hunk, just to realize that it wasn't a good thing for Salman's fan base. Our (Salman's fan club) expectation was getting a beating. It also suffered in the hands of some unbearable actors and directors to whom even the stars were favorable. When the whole country was fed up of what is being fed to them by non-sense actors, directors and the media, there comes a fan who was still thinking about one guy who can turn the realistic industry into filmi again on his strong shoulders. Just like him we all knew it was only Salman.
Though many had lost the hope, this guy took the initiative of making our dream come true. Yes; it was Mr prabhudeva who first saw it coming. He couldn't have done this if he wouldn't have been a fan of Salman. The second was Mr Salman himself, who saw a huge fan base returning home, which made him more responsible.
And, thereafter the credit goes to many others who followed Salman in taking it to a new level. Now, our hunk is in a supreme position and we very well know that he is a man with heart who just followed the hearts of his fans taking no wrong step further.
After being submissive and numb at one point, like a pheonix, the bird started flying again in every fan's heart. And, this is exactly why the fan base has even grown to thrillions today.
Being Human initiative is just a bonus to we Salman fans to shout and scream that our charmer is even humanistic in nature.
The lack of comparisons in heroism, dabangiri, charisma, innocense, spark in the eyes, personality, nature, attitude and many other criteria is what making everyone look back, rethink and quitely become a fan.
Welcome to the fan club,
Remember Being Human is just a bonus to us. No matter what, trust our star that he'll come good even if the sky comes down. He will come good for you everytime he hits the theatre.
Enjoy his presence,

Being Human has helped his image in a big way just as endorsing social causes and doing SMJ has added whole new credibility to Aamir's persona. Activism is like taking bath in the Holy Ganges for celebs.

Anyways much of his stardom is also due to the fact that he's re-packaged himself and is doing kind of films masses want to see him doing. He's taken care of his once-dwindling looks also. He's engaging fans and media well perhaps better than he ever did in his career.

Certain likeability was always there for him (he ruled the 90s with SRK). Right kind of spark simply rekindled latent fan mania.

Salman knows his audience and uses his strengths cleverly. He's a smart guy. I don't know much about Being Human but Dus ka dum really changed my perception about him as a person

Btw I never liked his brothers as actors because they were always Salman's brothers to my eye instead of individuals
