That's your assumption. One can't say SRK's acting talent was "never as much as" Aamir Khan's. At a time when Aamir was stuck in same old lover boy roles, SRK a rank newcomer, had given intense performances in Darr, Baazigar and Anjaam. His acting was compared to that of Dilip Kumar back then.
It's another story that he took the star route, got stuck in his image and kept doing same roles (except Hey Ram, CDI, Swades, MNIK) due to which his capability as an actor is sometimes judged inferiorly.
If every director worth his salt has an actor on top of his-her wishlist then it speaks for the talent of the actor. Everyone from a Deepa Mehta to a Raju Hirani wasn't after him just because he was a top star. Even Kamal Haasan had praised SRK as an actor and this is why he worked with him in Hey Ram.
"He was never talented enough" is an extreme statement.
