While the highlight of his short portfolio, his debut performance in Refugee was completely overshadowed by the spectacular response to his co-star, Kareena Kapoor. Her verbal antics have assured her continued visibility despite a subsequent string of flops, but Abhishek's unerring tact makes him boring copy for cinema tabloids which thrive on catfights and scandal.

However, he has rubbed somebody the wrong way, because they blacked out his face on several of the promotional posters for Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa posted around the upscale neighborhood of Juhu in Mumbai. Abhishek doesn't appreciate that. "I thought it was sick! I don't know who did it and why they did it. Basically, such acts are very disrespectful to somebody else's work. It is not in very good taste. We put in a lot of effort and money for the publicity of these films and destroying somebody else's property is very juvenile. It is very demeaning, both financially and emotionally. It is sad that people have to stoop to this level to prove a point. Whatever it might be." (Filmfare Online, Oct 2000)

The culprit was no doubt pleased in spring 2001, when a brawl between Abhishek and a reporter on the sets of Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai brought him into the headlines. Targeted with a complaint alleging that he manhandled and physically harmed the journalist for taking photographs during filming, Abhishek quickly deflated the gossip with his level-headed reponse: "Some journalists had an opinion of me, and I respect that. It was their right to feel the way they did. Whether they were right or wrong, I shouldn't have allowed the incident to upset me. But yes, no matter how hard I tried to let the incident go, it did affect me. Because in my heart I knew I hadn't done anything wrong. Why was I dragged into it?... Ironically, when Goldie Behl [director of BISKH] and I went back to Delhi two months later for a promotional tour...our PRO was the same gentleman who had accused me of getting violent with him. Likewise, his romance with Karisma Kapoor has earned him fleeting attention, but he refuses to cater to the public's curiosity in order to keep their interest. "I don't talk about my private life simply because I don't think it's anyone's business. I belong to a family which has guard its privacy fiercely... Once I agree to an interview, I've to be ready to face all the questions. But if someone asks me which side of the bed I sleep on, I don't see what that has to do with my life as a professional actor." (Filmfare, Mar. 2002)

Hrithik-Kareena had a LOT on for sure! She was pregnant with his child, from what i've heard. A lot of what was reported about these two seems to be true. He was summoned back by the 'Khan'daan because Susanne Khan Roshan is a daughter of quite a dangerous man ( i mean. C'MON! This is the man who beat up a hapless Zeenat Aman with whom he used to frolick constantly) in full public view. So they all were shit scared & told HR to clean his hands off Kareena K. They say, KK was shocked & wouldn't believe that he had done so. Until after a long time, she was finally brought to her senses . She was confused with his distance from her & him ignoring her. Unit people say that she used to cry all the time & wait outside HR's room insisting that she wants to come in 😲..
