Is acting really subjective?

okay...so is acting really subjective? there was an interesting debate going on abt this on some other topic so i thought why not make it a full fledged topic?

i always thought it was, since its an artform...but even for artforms, there is a certain amt of right or wrong associated right? or not?


WIth music, therz cacophony and therz symphony...but whts the absoulte definition for either of them?

like...if a singer is singing offkey, would u say "he cant sing...FACT...PERIOD" or would there actually be ppl who would find tht he is singing in key? is there an absolute value attached to whts " "offkey"???

would an actor with a whiny voice be considered good by anyone? or an actor with not more than a few expressions be considered good?

so is acting purely subjective? or is there a certain amt of boolean good or bad attached to it that can be treated as an absolute fact?

8 years on IF and I have concluded that beauty, acting and chemistry is all subjective.

A film is a team effort and everyone is handpicked to add to the film's merit.

well before i came to IF i was really of the opinion that Acting is not subjective but post my journey on IF i admit acting is PURELY SUBJECTIVE .u can witness the same in any daily soap forum where an actor who is worse than a wooden plank is praised for his fantabulous akting just because he is Hawt

Acting is both an art and a craft.

So it can be subjective and objective at the same time. Most people are going to make decisions based on "emotions" and "biases", right or wrong, so it will always be more subjective. Which is fine because any art form is subjective.
But we also have the "Objective". The Acting teachers, the Critics, the Award panels, who look at acting as a craft and have a trained eye for the naunces of real acting.

Acting isn't subjective...the perception, charisma, and connectivity of a character definitely is up for subjective views. The taste and liking as per those aspects can differ a lot.

Any art form is subjective. As long as the actor is able to convince you and you are able to relate to the character and not the actor,its a job well done.
