Indian Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was to be honoured by France on Thursday, her birthday, with a prestigious civilian award for her contribution to the arts, the French embassy said.

Ambassador Francois Richier was due to confer the honour of Knight Of The Order Of Arts And Letters ( Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) on Rai Bachchan at a hotel in theEntertainment hub Mumbai.

"This prestigious distinction comes in recognition of her invaluable contribution to the world of cinema and the development of Indo-French cooperation in cinema, art, and culture," a release from the embassy said.

Rai Bachchan, who turned 39 on Thursday, took the Miss World crown in 1994 and made her acting debut in the late 1990s, going on to become one of the most famous Bollywood faces abroad as well as in India.

A regular on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, she has starred in more than 40 mostly Indian films as well as few foreign movies, including The Pink Panther 2.

She married fellow actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2007 and they had their first child in November last year.

Her father-in-law, superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan, was awarded France's highest civilian award, the Legion d'Honneur in 2007.

Reports said Rai Bachchan was supposed to receive her French award in 2009, but the honour was postponed because her father was ill. Then it was rescheduled for 2011 and was again put off due to the Mumbai bombings.

In September Rai Bachchan was named as an ambassador for the United Nations AIDS agency, which tasked her with raising awareness to prevent HIV among children.

I was warned about Aaradhya becoming cranky: Aishwarya
Esha Razdan | Nov 02, 2012, 00:46AM IST

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan finally accepted the second highest civilian French honour at a famous hotel in Mumbai. It turned out to be quite an event evening courtesy Beti Bachchan something mommy had already anticipated. Actually, Aaradhya started crying as Ash got busy with the investiture ceremony.

No sooner did Mrs. Bachchan climb the stage to be honoured with the award than Aaradhya became cranky. But, proud hubby Abhishek Bachchan like a good father took good care of the daughter by leaving the ceremony hall for some time.

Ash on the other hand, quite sportingly took the situation in hand with her powerful speech. "I thank the French government for honoring me with this award. It's truly overwhelming. I thank you in all humility. I want to thank every professional who I have worked with who made it possible for me to have such a glorious career," said Aishwarya with an immense pride.

The concerned mother however, got an opportunity to speak her heart out to media. She in fact, made her stand clear about why Bachchans keep shutterbugs deprive of even a glimpse of Aaradhya. "We would love to share our personal moments with all of you, but we tend to take care of our babies. It gets overwhelming and uncomfortable for them in the presence of flash lights and cameras. That's why we get protective," exclaimed Ash.

Amidst all this, also, present at the occasion Amitabh Bachchan looked miffed with the whole Aaradhya episode. Perhaps, he had already warned he darling daughter-in-law about it which Ash did mention in her speech.

"I was warned about Aaradhya becoming cranky but nonetheless, it's a memorable moment," Ash concluded.

"Also, I take this opportunity to thank everyone who I have worked with as they made it possible for me to have such a glorious career," she said.

Aishwarya's entire family including husband Abhishek, in-laws Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya were present.

Aishwarya, who turned 39 today, took the Miss World crown in 1994 and made her acting debut in 1997. She starred in films in various languages including English, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. She is a regular on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.
