'Student Of The Year' review: Gear up for a lukewarm movie-wala-film!Ananya Bhattacharya

Take a cauldron. Mix in 'Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire' in generous doses, the essence of 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', few minutes of some other films-set-in-school, and add a dash of '3 Idiots' for flavour. What you have is Karan Johar's latest offering, 'Student Of The Year'. The director's latest offering justifies, to the last bit, the adage - 'all that glitters is not gold'.

Set in the picturesque locales of Dehradun, more precisely, in the Forest Research Institute and Kasiga School, 'Student Of The Year' has every element of a Karan Johar school/college film. Beautiful surroundings; the fluff of snobbish, brand-obsessed people; few nerds – one of them bespectacled, inevitably; a Dean who just doesn't understand the values of friendship and camaraderie and so on. You ask for it, and you get it. No stone is left unturned in leaving a large, bold Karan Johar signature on the film.

St. Teressa's School is one of the best schools in the country. Students here, every year, have their eyes and goals set on only one end – the Student of the Year Trophy. A bespectacled Kayoze Irani narrates the story of St. T's ten years after their batch dissipated from the school, and now gathered at the deathbed of their Dean, Yoginder Vashisht (Rishi Kapoor). The run for the Student of the Year trophy, ten years back, was one that was nothing short of a live-or-die competition for the inmates of St. T's. However, no matter how much the posters of the film shout out, it certainly is no 'competition for life'. Sigh.

Cut to Rohan Nanda. The filthy rich guy who drives around in a Ferrari at times and Merc convertible at others. The business tycoon's son who has his chelas all in place. Ro is the boy every girl in the school seems to have set an eye upon and the flirtation skills of Nanda range from light touching at times to receiving a massage on the beach at others. Rohan's complex relationship with his father, Ashok Nanda (Ram Kapoor) is one to watch out for. There certainly are moments which can be termed moderately moving, if not intensely so.

Alia Bhatt, as the girl whose each hour of the day is dominated by thoughts of whether to carry a Louis Vuitton bag or to strut around in Jimmy Choos, does a remarkable job of playing Shanaya Singhania. Shanaya and Rohan are the couple everybody looks up to in the school. Tanya Israni (Sana Saeed: Yes, that same Anjali who played SRK and Rani Mukerji's daughter in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'), is the biggest haddi in the kabaab of Rohan-Shanaya's relationship. However, Shanaya and Rohan, as the former's best friend Shruti (Mansi Rachh) puts tritely in one line, are a couple whose match had been made not by rabb, but by amiron ki club.

So far so good. Enter Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra) and the order of the universe stands disrupted, and badly so. Owner of a six-pack abdomen and some solid potential, Siddharth Malhotra is one of the new entrants to watch out for. Malhotra essays the role of Abhi with lan. From friends to enemies, Rohan and Abhi traverse an emotional journey. And with Shanaya as the rope in the tug-of-war between the hearts of the two, the triangular love story isn't all that bad – but hasn't got anything much that's unpredictable, either.

The impressive auxiliary apparatus of the film, one that includes actors like Ram Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Farida Jalal and Boman Irani in special appearances, Sushma Seth and Rishi Kapoor, is really worth applause. Rishi Kapoor, in a homosexual avatar, yet again proves that he is an actor who can do justice to any role meted out to him. Nursing the hots for the coach of St. T's, Ronit Roy, Rishi Kapoor portrays on screen, a colourful-at-times-irate-at-others patriarch who doesn't compromise on the ethics of his school, come what may. Ronit Roy looks exceptionally fit and well – hot – as the coach of the school, and plays his part with amazing brilliance. Ram Kapoor's Ashok Nanda reiterates the story of a rich father-who-doesn't-have-any-respect-for-his-son's-dreams, and he plays it well.

Foot-tapping remixes of songs like 'Gulabi aankhen', 'Yeh chand sa roshan chehra', 'Disco deewane' will sure let musician duo Vishal-Shekhar stay at the top of the music charts for a considerable period of time. 'Radha', again, is one number that is on its way to wriggle up to the top of festive song charts. 'Vele', too, is one groove-worthy song. 'Ishq wala love', well, if someone makes us understand the lyrics, is another good song.

To sum it up, watch 'Student Of The Year' for the debutantes. They have really pulled off a tough task of playing praiseworthy roles in a film which suffers from the lack-of-a-story syndrome.

Rating: Two cheers for this

"Student of the year" Movie review
New Delhi, Oct 19: Schools and college hours is what we enjoy most in our entire life. Bunking classes, flirting with girls, partying, clubbing, impressing ladies with hot wheels, carrying all that fashion which keeps one in focus, imitating teachers' actions and other stuff fulfils our most important phase.

Onscreen we have witnessed all these ingredients in numerous flicks like 'Jo jeeta Wahin Sikander', Kuch Kuch hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Kushi Kabh Gham, Main Hoon Na, 3 idiots, and all stood up their expectation.

Taking all that stuff with competitive environment Karan Johar after 3 years sits on the Director's chair and asks who will be the "Student of the Year"? It's his first venture without the trio-SRK, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee while the other trio marks their debut with "SOTY"- Sidhart Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

The story is about Abhimanyu Singh and Rohan Nanda played by Sidharth Malhotra and Varun dhawan respectively. Abhi comes from a middle class family and wants to fly high in his life and 'Student of the year' trophy will give him wings to fly. While Rohan is the son of big industrialist played by Ram Kapoor but has a compound relation with him. Winning "SOTY" trophy will give him the approval he subconsciously desire for.

Now trophy is at the sake so there has to be a competitive environment among the students. But the two are the only students who claim to be the toughest competitors in whole campus. They clash in canteens, football ground and other platforms. Some how the duo becomes good pals until the Barbie doll of the school, Shanaya enters the scene. Born with a silver spoon, the high heel and fashionable Shanaya slays every guy of the school.

Most importantly she is childhood friend of Rohan and now is his girlfriend. But Abhi attraction towards his friend's girlfriend conflicts their friendship and again Rohan and Abhi are rivals now. It's high time now. The season for the competition has begun. Lines are drawn, for the main event. Who will triumph with SOTY trophy, is what interesting in last hours of the flick.

The flick is colourful with beautiful location, as what we expect from a Karan Johar drama. Boys and girls matching their steps at each interval, too many dance numbers to keep you entertain. But do we really witness these happenings in our schools and colleges, if notice on a flip side. We are informed in the beginning of the flick that St. Teresa's school is highly disciplined campus of the town and has students from posh background. Here a middle class Abhimanyu enters the campus and befriends with the highly wealthy and arrogant Rohan. Further every male relation is given a 'Dostana' connection; just to add some more unnecessary humour.

But despite all this the last hour is countering as it will remind you of 'Jo Jeeta Wahin Sikander' finale racing clash. The message in no new but is spoken loud and clear to fill you with motivation.

The three stars are brilliant with their performance. Alia Bhatt will remind you of Poo from 'K3G', Varun Dhawan reflexes a lot of muscles while Sidhart Malhotra stands just above all with great acting skills. Rishi Kapoor as college Principal appears good. The transformation from a baddie in Agneepath to a gay in SOTY is appreciable. While Ram Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Maninee De Mishra, Farida Jalal, Prachi Shah, Sushma Seth, Akshay Anand, all lend adequate support. Boman Irani appears in a cameo.

For pasteurization KJo is best known. From snow mountains to funky clubs and others are beautifully captured.

Vishal-Shekhar brings out something different for the flick and proves out to be a winner with the soundtracks like Ishq wala love, Radha, Ratta Maar, while Disco Deewane is a treat to watch with Kajol making a special appearance in the song.

I'll go ***/5 stars for KJO's youthful "Student of the year". It will fetch young generation while those who have already past that age would want to revisit those days.

Karan Johar gets it horribly wrong this time around with this high on gloss, supreme on toned bods, but low on substance romantic drama that fails to go beyond visual gratification

As you enter the theatre to watch Karan Johar's larger-than-life production Student Of The Year, there is a set of predictable elements your filmy mind automatically takes for granted. It's a given that a KJo movie has to be promisingly ostentatious, supremely surreal and unbelievably unrealistic. You know that there will be a dream world crafted to perfection, there will be snow-clad mountains, pretty actors serenading in the best designer outfits, extravagant weddings and over-the-top emotional hoo-ha. But then you still anticipate a generous dose of drama and oodles of entertainment from the stylish director's glossy creations.

You can't deny the fact that Karan's big on production value flicks hold the capacity to transport you into the world we all would like to be a part of. KJo surely knows how to sell frivolous fluff and fantasies. Sadly, the same can't be said about his latest release Student Of The Year – starring Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. The film has oodles of fluff but hardly any substance to hold your attention.

SOTY revolves around three youngsters: Rohan (Varun Dhawan), Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra) and Shanaya (Alia Bhatt). Rohan is the son of India's leading business tycoon (Ram Kapoor) who is confused about his on-and-off relationship with his girlfriend Shanaya. Abhimanyu comes from a middle class family and wants to win the world with his fierce competitiveness. The trio studies at St Teresa, one of India's premier academic institutions (that clearly emphasises more on the physical development of its students and doesn't care much about their IQ levels). So you see boys flexing their muscles and showcasing their washboard abs in almost every frame while girls pay more attention on their designer clothes and discuss the wonders of push-up bra!) It's the place where the rich brats come to study in their Ferraris and Lamborghinis, and even the poorest of the poor ride swanky sports bike. Almost every student of St Teresa nurtures one dream, and that is to win the prestigious 'Student of the year' trophy that will bring fame and fortune along with it.

Interestingly, and quite typically, the film's trio is amongst the biggest competitors in the race to bag the most coveted title. But as the competition heats up Abhimanyu realises that his friend Rohan is taking his long-time girlfriend Shanaya (the modern day Pooh, played irritatingly by Kareena Kapoor in Kjo's 2004 directorial venture Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) for granted. Abhimanyu decides to help Shanaya to get Rohan's bachpan ka pyar, but in the process he slowly develops a crush on her. Friends quickly turn formidable foes and now there are two things at the stake – the student of the year trophy and Shanaya's love. Who will win the trophy and who will walk away with the girl? Or can one of the two deserving hunks win both? To get the answer to that one, you have to watch the film.

It's a predictable plot that hardly offers anything out of the box and director Karan Johar, in his attempt to spice up the tale, adds too many frills and goes all out to glamorise the movie. So you have private jets all set to take you on a trip to Thailand at the drop of a hat. You have a lavish wedding in the exotic locale and an American school that boasts of amenities that can easily put our Olympic Villas to shame. Then there's the prom, pompousness and irksome pretentions.

Johar's leading men and the leading lady have been employed for enough of unnecessary, so-called aesthetically well put up, skin show, and the director hesitates in showing some restrain. You can't help giggle when you see the boys emerging out of the sea in their teeny-weeny boxers with camera hovering over their torso – almost greedily – capturing every detail of their bod. It's one thing to see John Abraham pulling his trunks beyond permissible limit to create a frenzy, but quite another to see Varun Dhawan flashing his butt crack as he comes out of the pool after a refreshing swimming section. Karan has definitely failed to ask the most critical question here – why?

As for the cast of the film, both Siddharth and Varun have done a good job. While Siddharth has a definite camera presence and exudes confidence, Varun and Alia have played their part decently. Rishi Kapoor's gay character is intermittently funny. Ram Kapoor and Ronit Roy are completely wasted. Vishal-Shekhar's music is hummable, refreshing and foot tapping. Writer Rensil Dsilva's script is muddled and the screenplay is predictable. We wish director KJo had managed to infuse some novelty into his story and gone beyond Louis Vuitton, Ferraris, I-pads and his usual Dostana connotations.

Movie Review: SOTY is about watching Karan Johar's make believe world

by Rubina A Khan7 mins ago

Student Of The Year is a big film starring newcomers ' a first for producer-director Karan Johar who up till now, only worked with the country's biggest stars, namely Shah Rukh Khan. The introductions of the lead players ' Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) and Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra) are done interestingly.

Vintage songs set to contemporary sounds characterise the lead players as rich kid, fashion Barbie and poor guy on campus, the campus being that of the elite boarding school, Saint Teresa's. It is an elite school, where the super rich educate their kids, but with a sprinkling of the desi guys too ' Tata bachche and Bata bachche as described in the film. The classrooms are hip and the grounds well manicured, just like they should be in a Karan Johar film, never mind if they don't exist anywhere else in the world. It's all about watching Karan's make-believe world.

So, Rohan and Shanaya are dating and Tanya Israni (Sana Saeed) who dresses like the proverbial "hot chick on campus" but isn't really, is the third wheel here. It's weird to see Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's cute little Anjali all grown up in the film, discussing bikni waxes and push up bras with her mother and making bedroom eyes at Rohan. Then there's a really funny character called Jeet who has some fantastic lines in the film, an earnest Parsi guy called Pseudo and a jolly Sardar. Enter new boy Abhimanyu in the motley group and the campus drama begins. You guessed it ' it's about the annual Student of the Year trophy!

Fun and mind games, love, lots of good songs picturised fabulously making each character look amazing, witty lines and a steady pace make up for the rest of the film which culminates in a winning way, naturally. Some lines like "Teri jodi rab ne nahi, ameeron ke club ne banai hai", "Shanaya apni ma ki iklauti aur step dad ki paanchvi beti hai" are just hilarious! The music of the film is a good confluence of Western and Indian attributes ' the Radha song embodies that well, as does Disco Deewane.

The film looks good but even though you aren't entirely bored, you tend to drift away. It's a light and breezy film, but the progression of the plot is rather arduous and stretched into a Triathlon and love triangles and what not, when it could have come to a conclusion earlier. And it does not have a very original plot line either, give or take a few elements.

The film looks good but even though you aren't entirely bored, you tend to drift away.

The good thing about the film is that Karan has turned three regular people into absolute stars on celluloid. Alia, Varun and Siddharth are extremely appealing visually and make for striking screen presence in the film throughout. All three have set out to conquer the world of celluloid and with SOTY as their launch film, it does not get any better. But I am guessing they will probably not look as good on screen as they did in SOTY given Karan's extremely meticulous about his actor's appearances. Actually, they could, if they work with Karan again!

Siddharth is what Meredith Grey from the hit television series, Grey's Anatomy would describe as McDreamy, maybe even McSteamy, or both. He is stunning in every frame and I think his ab-fab shots in the Thailand wedding bit of the film make John Abraham's Dostana Derriere shot look tepid! Siddharth is not as fluid in the song and dance routines, of which there are many, like Varun and Alia who are perfectly at ease doing so. He looks good, but the same can't be said about his rather awkward acting.

Alia is effortless and a natural in her performance ' bouncy and effervescent and quite adorable as the ditzy Shanaya. The camera loves her boyish face and inherent charm. Being veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's daughter, she sure knows where she's headed from here.

Varun walks and talks the part of Richie Rich Rohan ' he's got the act down pat and does a super job essaying it. Varun is the younger son of filmmaker David Dhawan and he too, has a film legacy to live up to. So far, so good.

But the best performance in the film is that of Rishi Kapoor playing Dean Vashisht who is gay. He is simply marvelous and absolutely delightful ' no over the top walk, frightful mannerisms or crazy colours ' just a subtle hint of his sexual preference through his extraordinary performance. Do notice the changing bejewelled pin on his lapel ' from diamond encrusted butterflies which is a favourite and oft repeated, to the Koala bear. Sushma Seth plays his mother, yet again!

Kajol makes her "lucky mascot" appearance in the film and owns it!

Karan has given Bollywood three brand new stars with this film, minted in his very own Dharma Productions. But as a filmmaker, Student Of The Year is not his finest work. Sure, it's got all the elements of finesse and expansive production values that his films are known for, but he has also been very pivotal in directing and producing films with engaging stories. On the creative front, SOTY does not raise the bar. He's definitely not the director of the year as far as Student Of The Year is concerned.

Student Of The Year Opens Pretty Well At Multiplexes

Friiday 19th October 2012 10.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Student Of The Year opened pretty well at multiplexes with collections on average around 45-50% in the metros. The opening is dependent on the location with premium multiplexes in and around Delhi taking a good 60% opening but a good PVR property in Nagpur opening to 35%.

The first day collections will be helped by the fact that the multiplexes which are big collectors will have good collections. The best opening for the film was in the Delhi city area.

There are two ways at looking at the opening, it is a good start if you go by the face value of the film but average going the budget of the film.

The single screen opening is likely to be low and hoe tha metro and A centre multiplex audience behaves will decide the fate of the film.

Bollywood First Day First Show: Student of the Year Review

Student of the Year

Rohan (Varun Dhawan) and Abhimanyu (Sidharth Malhotra) are two boys on opposite ends of the social spectrum – while Rohan drives fancy cars and dates (presumably) the richest girl in the school (Shanaya, Alia Bhatt), Abhi is a scholarship student whose sole focus is making it large in life. Though they don't start off on the right foot, the two manage to become best of friends over the coming months, until certain incidents prove to be a turning point in their relationship. Fueled now by their egos and ambitions, Rohan and Abhimanyu compete for the Student of the Year trophy, both desperately desiring it in order to prove a point.

Student of the Year has been a much-hyped film for Karan Johar and his three newcomers, but does this film deserve any trophies? Read our Pros and Cons list to find out!

Pros:

Student of the Year

+ Great performances! Such a relief to realize that Varun, Sidharth and Alia are much more than eyecandy. Infact, you'll barely realize they're newcomers – Karan makes sure to give them the same treatment that he'd give huge stars, and they reciprocate by delivering self-assured, natural performances. Varun Dhawan is superstar material with his confident acting and Shahid Kapoor-like dance moves. Sidharth Malhotra looks all ready to be the next romance hero, as he excels especially in those sequences. Alia Bhatt looks like a dream and carries her scenes very well. Beyond the main leads, though, the supporting cast is great too – Sana Saeed looks every bit the 'high school hottie' part and does a good job. Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor, Kayoze Irani, Manasi Rachh and the rest of the student gang are super. And Rishi Kapoor is just fabulous – quite a new role for him, and while it's nothing more than a caricature, he pulls it off very well.

Student of the Year

+ Everything looks good. It's typical KJo in this sense – glossy, colourful, larger-than-life, with fancy clothes, cars and gadgets thrown into the mix. If you've got a liking for this type of cinema, then Student of the Year won't disappoint in the least. It's packaged extremely well with the requisite wedding scenes, dream sequences and, of course, good-looking people. The songs, which are fantastic, look even better on the big screen, and I nearly broke into dance during Radha and The Disco Song myself.

Student of the Year

+ It's fun! Student of the Year is sort of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai meets Gossip Girl meets Glee. It's a high-energy film with enough moments to keep you chuckling, and manages to hold your attention throughout. I personally loved the musical portions; I thought they were done extremely well and added to the feel of the film.

Student of the Year

+ It's well-directed. Again, full props to Karan for giving these newcomers superstar treatment in this film. I've read several interviews where he said he began by over-instructing them and realized that wouldn't do. Whatever he did in the end worked, though – he seems to have brought out the best in these three performers. Further to that, he's orchestrated some scenes beautifully – my favourite would be during the wedding portions of the film, where the characters are completely silent and emote to an Ishq Wala Love instrumental in the background. Lovely!

Cons:

Student of the Year

- It's fluffy. The love story is fairly typical, there's no real suspense in there (despite the use of flashback style of storytelling), and sometimes the emotions may feel somewhat artificial. At the end of it all, it's really just another candy-floss film. Furthermore, Karan makes liberal use of his stereotypes again – there's the token gay character that is, frankly, quite unnecessary. For once, I'd like to see him explore a gay character/relationship that's not there just for the gags.

Student of the Year

- Unnecessary melodrama in the second half. Okay, so you know how KJo stories usually go: the first half makes you laugh, while the second half is intended to make you cry. While this has worked for films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho, the melodrama in Student of the Year feels unwarranted. It definitely isn't to the excesses of his previous films, but even then – SOTY is one of those films you want to be in a good mood for throughout, so the attempts to evoke tears don't feel right.

Verdict:

Student of the Year is, at the end of the day, a typical KJo film – it's not path-breaking, and Karan doesn't put up the pretense of it being so. What it is, though, is fun, escapist, and entertaining – worth a watch, in my opinion.

Send to Friend

Karan Johar's latest directorial venture is set on the structure of JAANE TU... YA JAANE NAA and 3 IDIOTS.

It begins in the NOW with friends meeting after 10 years and goes back to THEN, keeps moving back and forth before culminating in the NOW.

view STUDENT OF THE YEAR stills
view STUDENT OF THE YEAR stills

Abbas Tyrewala's flick worked well because the manner in which he built up the momentum to the climax was methodical. In the end, just as the girl who had never met Genelia's character was eager to meet her, so were the audience. In 3 IDIOTS, Rajkumar Hirani had Fungsuk Wangdu, cleverly hidden, who stole the thunder. It also addressed a real issue on college campuses and the pressures students are subjected to from parents.

SOTY has shades of these two films only in presentation. Its treatment and subject is different. The narrative is not as fluid and can be best described as jerky with too many plots and plans in the initial 20 minutes. Later, it does sober down, but still keeps going back and forth.

CHECK OUT: B-town praises Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR

The story here is about a school Saint Teresa set in Dehradun. Their Dean (Rishi Kapoor) almost 25 years ago had initiated a Student of the Year Trophy where they all compete through four stages - An IQ test, Treasure Hunt, Dance and Triathlon. At each level, students are eliminated until the final eight vie for the title at the Triathlon.

The film begins with the race ending and a glimpse of the Dean. It then moves on to Pseudo (Kayoze Irani) coming on screen with the narrative. A phone call in the middle of the night gets him to call all friends who have not met in 10 years. Something happened where all went their way never to communicate with one another. But now, their Dean is seriously ill and Kayo is entrusted the task to get all his friends to meet at the hospital.

From here, the story is told among the four friends who meet first, who are then joined by the main protagonists Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra), Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) all making their debuts.

SOTY is full-on candy floss - 90 per cent gloss and 10 per cent content.

The interest now moves on to the three debutants. All three give a confident performance, including Kayoze Irani (Boman Irani's son), who too is making his debut. His role, however, is badly structured and within the limitations, he does well.

Alia Bhatt has that 'X' factor which will take her places. There's not much of a scope performance wise, but given the scenes, she looks glamorous when she has too and also emotes reasonably well.

view STUDENT OF THE YEAR videos

Siddharth Malhotra as the underdog, the new lad who joins school, too pitches in with a decent performance. Varun Dhawan's performance improves with every scene and by the end, he stands out. All these three grow on you as the film progresses and by the time the film ends, you cannot but fall in love with them.

The music is peppered with hits from the past, cleverly remixed. So you can't go wrong there. But there was a lot this film could offer the younger audience whch Karan Johar is targeting.

CHECK OUT: 'Student' Alia Bhatt not worried about SOTY result

I don't know why, but I get this strange feeling that the director was not fully involved or attached to SOTY. The mark of intensity that one has seen in his past films is missing. It's like a grand wedding reception with a poor food spread.

Nevertheless, it will go well with the younger audience who he has catered to.

'Student Of The Year' Tweet Review: First day, first show

New Delhi: Karan Johar is returning to the silver screen with his directorial venture 'Student of the Year'. The film stars Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra in lead roles.

The film is going to feature a school with ultra modern facilities where the management has announced a competition to select the best student of the year. This is a competition where only the toughest will survive as it requires tough mental and physical attributes.

The songs of the film are already chartbusters and Karan Johar has left no stone unturned in promoting his film, thus it is expected to receive the initial eyeballs, but after 2-3 days, only content will be able to take the film forward.

Karan Johar has given blockbusters in the past and is known for catering the young audiences. The basic premise is same again, so it would be interesting to see how innovatively he unfolds his bouquet of emotions.

10:25 AM: Rishi Kapoor is trying hard to act different in #SOTY. Let's wait till the end.

10:26 AM: Ram Kapoor is getting good films these days. He is here too. #SOTY

10:32 AM: Pind ke Beckham. #SOTY has a lot of one liners.

10:35 AM: Gloss, gloss and more gloss. Tareef karoon kya uski. #SOTY

10:39 AM: Aadmi ya toh chamcha hota hai ya kaanta aur tu toh apne baap pe gaya hai. #SOTY is funny.

10:56 AM: There is a reference to Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead in #SOTY. Is somebody playing Howard Roark?

11:10 AM: These characters are written to just make the audiences drool over them. #SOTY

11:14 AM: A brilliantly shot slow motion sequence shows KJo's authority in #SOTY.

11:16 AM: Only poster perfect images are not enough for the modern day audiences. #SOTY

11:17 AM: KJo has given nothing in the name of substance so far. #SOTY

11:19 AM: Too much importance has been given to the existing Bollywood stereotypes. #SOTY

11:21 AM: However one thing is for sure. Many youngsters are going to crave for a school like St Teresa after #SOTY.

11:26 AM: It's the right time to increase the pace. #SOTY

11:28 AM: Finally the film has introduced the conflict. The student of the year competition is open now. #SOTY

11:36 AM: Get a flavour of realty shows. This school has some really strange rules. #SOTY

11:44 AM: Thanks to Sanjay Dutt that jaadu ki jhappi is the solution to every problem. #SOTY

11:47 AM: Ishq wala love ho ya gaana wala song. There was not much scope for a dream song at this juncture. #SOTY

11:52 AM: The good thing about #SOTY is that characters know what is expected out of them.

11:54 AM: Saajan revisited in #SOTY.

11:58 AM: #SOTY heading towards its climax. The director should not lower the tempo now.

12:37 PM: #SOTY ends at a happy note.

12:39 PM: Acting wise Varun Dhawan is the pick of actors. Sidharth and Alia are satisfactory. #SOTY

12:42 PM: The length of the story and its predictability can cause a little distraction but the tempo tries to compebsate for it. #SOTY

12:44 PM: Music and cinematography are the highlights of #SOTY.

12:45 PM: As director this is not Karan Johar's best but #SOTY will be remembered for its grandeur.

12:48 PM: KJo has shown a grip on the presentation but characterisation needed some more depth. #SOTY

12:51 PM: #SOTY has every essential ingredient of a Bollywood blockbuster. It's not easy to recreate a world like St Teresa.

12:54 PM: Thanks for being with us throughout the tweet review of #SOTY. Have a good day.
