Actually, the whole point of the movie was the Ethan wanted to end his life because he was a quadriplegic. He made a court appeal about it. Sofia, who loves Ethan, sees his condition and she agrees to mercy killing. It's assumed that he died in the end but I like how SLB didn't show his death, rather he showed a happy, smiling Ethan in the end.

It's a beautiful movie. Try to put yourself in Ethan's position.

But perhaps the Indian audience would rather have a couple of item songs and mindless comedies instead, though.
