Q. Why does Shanghai have such bad collections when it is a good film?
A. This good/bad film is all opinion and subjective. The collections say it is not a good film and that's the bottom line. A 100 reasons can be given for low collections but the biggest reason is always bad content. When an actually good film does not open well, it will always have an upward trajectory at the box office whether its starts with 50 lakhs or 5 crore and this is not the case with Shanghai.

don't agree with BOI here... andaz apna apna and sholay were both flops when they released and now they are known as classics... whereas, movies that were huge hits were panned by the critics for their 'bad content'...

I loved the movie. But everybody I spoke to thought it was really slow and even though the direction was fabolous, the performances great, especially Abhay, the script was weak.

So I can see where the negative WOM is coming from. Its a deep, thoughtful film that is made for a niche audience.

these two factors would work against a movie... after all, even the niche audience did not make it a hit, like some of the recent small budget movies... pace is important... content can be good, but if they drag the movie, that hardly would increase the entertainment quotient... you need a balance...

it lacks entertainment... maybe... I haven't watched it yet... but isn't it too soon to be called unsuccessful

The problem was everybody thought it'd repeat kahani's success and are pleasantly surprised when that didn't happen.

Move on people, it was a semi - intelligent film with great performances- by default it was destined to flop

slow? aha. that's the problem. slow movies don't work not even with niche audience no matter how good the content. i guess this one would go down like rocket singh which was also fab but not even ranbir fans were interested!

As someone said intelligent movies hardly works in India.About content i liked the movie .It was not boring for my taste.
Entertainment is subjective ,I find the movie entertaining ..But in bollywood entertaining movies are thought to be the OTT and trash kinds so ..no Shanghai is not OTT or trash It is a well made political thriller ..Watch it before criticizing it

slow paced films hardly ever work with the audience, no matter how awsome the content is...

LBC, Lakshya, Rocket Singh, Swades...all flops coz of the SLLLOWWW pace...

I saw the movie and I don't think it is slow. In fact, it moves fast enough, so that if you're not paying attention, you might miss something. I don't know why it didn't work, but do not think it is about the pace of the movie.
Also, I think people think it is going to be a very depressing movie, and all the reviews seem to reinforce that idea, but it is not. It follows one investigation, so in that sense is a thriller as much as a social comment.
I think less publicity, and the idea that it is 'dull' and 'depressing' may have been contributing factors. Seen without those pre-conceived ideas, its an intelligent, interesting movie.
