Deol generated a mass hysteria in Punjab during the shooting of producer-director-actor Ammtoje Mann's ambitious project Kaafilain Punjab, inspired by the Malta Boat tragedy in 1997.

"We had almost 90 to 100 policemen all the time on locations, yet they were unable to control the crowd. We provided Sunny two police jeeps with 17 to 18 policemen all the time plus had 30 policemen on day and night duty at the private resort he was staying in," says Mann.
