What's best about Bollywood- it sells dreams. Hollywood sells sci-fi, fantasy dreams and a lot of realistic drama...Bollywood just sells social dreams...marriage, revenge, brotherhood, sisterhood, family...all the masala...LOL and the music- especially the song and dance. I know many dislike these things but I like them if done well...the point is masala has to be done well...the songs have to be situational...the drama or OTT emotion has to come out well...it should be fun not meaningless/ leave your brain behind kind of masala film. It has to have something- it has to say something- it cannot be completely meaningless like Singham I enjoyed even though it was silly in most parts but still it said something and I enjoyed the masala 😆

I do want more romantic films with dance around trees song. Watching songs of TNLHG I realize how much I love to watch a cute pair dance around trees! LOL!

So ya what's better in BW- song and dance unrealisitc romance on mountain tops 😆

I tend to watch more Hollywood - but I think that says something about our time period. Its not easy to generalize an entire industry. I cannot put either on a ladder in which one falls below the other.

Rather i think industries change and fluctuate with time. Bollywood had a golden era itself, and in the past we have had parallel film movements, bursts of political film making, years of pure emotional melodrama as well as moments in which films were being made that were far beyond its time.

The same goes for Hollywood. The same goes for any industry really.

I think the 90's and the early 2000's are Bollywood's 'masala' years - major melodrama, color, wedding, massive synchronized dance sequences, dramatic conflict, etc etc.

I see several films emerging though that are ushering in a new era, perhaps one with a more serious alternative tone. But a parallel like that can be made with Hollywood as well - what was once 'indie' is now largely moving into a space which the majority seem to want to watch.

Sorry for rambling, but my point is, I refuse to blatantly exclaim one is better than the other. Not to mention hollywood is the film industry of an entire nation - Bollywood is the industry of one state.

If we want to really look at our own achievements, look at all the films of India.

It's only in Bollywood that you see an actor dance and romance with the heroine even after being shot. It's only in BW that the hero can stop a moving train with his bare trains.

Its movies like anand, Abhimaan, Angoor, jaane bhi do yaaron, andaz apna apna, golmaal - old one, deewar, TZP, etc. that makes me cling to bollywood. also the song and dance works for me, but not in all of them...as of now, BW is run out of ideas and stories and has been giving out the crappiest movies ever...

That's precisely the point I was trying to make, only you put it down concisely. Just because the likes of Transformers or Pirates of the Caribbean rakes in all the money, does not mean those are only type of movies Hollywood make. The emotional factor is present in Hollywood dramas as well - and in my opinion, they work much better than most Bollywood emotional scenes - it's just theirs is different from the usual melodrama we have been subjected to watch from our childhood.

I <3 Shawshank Redemption. Now that's something incredibly entertaining and yet very moving. Have you seen Requiem for a Dream? It's too disturbing and terrifying - the stellar performances from Connelly and Burstyn brings alive the horror of drug usage. Lord of the Rings is an incredible cinematic achievement - I didn't like the last installment all that much though. Blood Diamond is hard-hitting, and it totally brought alive the condition of Africa. Haven't seen Schindler's List. I liked The Pianist too. All of these films expressed emotions without going overboard.

You should watch Shindler's list, it's amazing based on world war 2. The movie is really moving.

There is La Miserable and both of these movies have Liam Neeson in them.

I tried watching Requiem for a dream, could not stomach it. The movie to hard hitting for me to sit through.

I have seen The Pianist as well.

I can not stand melodrama, that's why I got a headache when I saw "Black", I felt I wasted my $10 for this movie. Any movie that comes from Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes my head spin.

I'm more into East Asian cinema of the action/martial arts variety. As far as Hollywood & Bolly are concerned my standards are simple. I really enjoy Hollywood but the escapism & over the top storylines that Bolly provides does it for me. I could watch a Naseeb [1981] or a Don [1978] over & over again, but never with a Hollywood film UNLESS it was an erotic thriller of some kind.

Schindler's List has been on my to-watch list for quite a while now, but sadly I can't find a DVD anywhere.

You should definitely give Requiem for a Dream another try - it could be hard to stomach, but it's not an experience to miss out. Connelly and Burstyn were so good, it's unbelievable!

Black was so pretentious, it made me roll me eyes out! And Rani was unconvincing in her role for the most part. And post Black, the quality of his films have been sliding down even more.

Well, the statement abt bollywood being more colourful as such is more generalised...generally, because we have such elaborate costumes, sets, jewellery song and dance routines compared to hollywood, the films are consistently more on colour and vibrant cinematography.

And by my previous statement on non-bollywood watchers...again, its generalized...im just saying wht i see...most of the bollywood related blogs and forums on the Internet are run by ppl of non-indian background, who just happen to have an interest in bollywood and indian film industries...I dunt think i was talking abt our films being accepted in film festivals abroad because the standard bollywood masala is not one for film festivals anyway...i was talking more abt mass/general audience acceptance...

my group of non indian friends prefer to watch devdas over Don 2 ..hence, i made a generic statement tht since they dunt get to see all the melodrama, the culture, the costumes, the song and dance in regular hollywood movies, they prefer the standard bollywood affair more than ones which possibly try to ape the west, because they've already seen all tht done in a much better fashion in hollywood.

Isn't that an unfair comparison? Devdas was a pretty good movie, sans the melodrama. It had a stupendous cinematography, production design, ensemble cast, and decent acting. Don 2 was like... 😳 If Devdas was compared with say Gone with the Wind, or Don 2 was compared with the Bourne series, most movie buffs would probably chose the Hollywood versions, Indians or non-Indians alike. I see your point, though. A lot of non-Indians usually want to watch a Bollywood/Indian movie that portrays Indian's culture in its fullest glory for just that, rather than the quality of the film itself. But it's more for experiment purposes, I guess. I don't they would necessarily be in awe of the film itself or continue with their Bollywood ventures just to take a peek at the Indian culture, if the films are not good enough.

Some Hollywood films can be incredibly 'colorful' and visually pleasing. In fact, I think the colorful overtone is balanced and blended quite well there, than it is in movies like DBH that just gives you a headache. But I see your point here as well - Indian films are, or rather used to be, so OTT and full of headache-inducing colors back then in the 90s!
