Amrita Rao, Viveik Oberoi, Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol in a still from Pyare Mohan |
Dir: Indra Kumar
Cast: Fardeen Khan, Viveik Oberoi
What's hot: The premise was good and the screenplay sometimes keeps your hopes alive. Anu Malik's music lifts the film to a considerable extent, particularly the two songs, Har Pyare ki ek hain Radha and Tu jahan bhi jaayegi (but this one sounds so similar to Nadeem Shravan's Chand Taare Gawah Hain from Damini).
The Viveik-Fardeen camaraderie has its moments and the chemistry they share, is what salvages the film from being a total disaster.
Fardeen Khan comes out tops in the performances; his casual candour is appealing and fits the part perfectly. But the guy needs to seriously shed some weight. Viveik Oberoi delivers a sprightly performance; watch him in the introductory sequence dancing on the road; he's so uninhibited.
What's not: The film falls flat in the most crucial department: it just fails to evoke any genuine laughs. Indra Kumar has the situations right; he knows nobody's looking for logic; he even has a good cast. But the director's own disinterest in the project is evident; either that, or he's just not been able to cope with the changing times.
Even the genuinely funny scenes lose their impact; sometimes the sequence is stretched far too much; the background score is too jarring; at other times, the damage is done due to the gross overacting by the performers.
Production values are disappointing; sets by Omung Kumar belong to the seventies, cinematography by Sunil Patel is patchy and looks like the editor too was on a vacation.
Amrita Rao has a pleasing presence but somebody please get her a new designer. Esha Deol (why she's knocked off her surname in the credits is a mystery!) displays the desired chutzpah but is a make-up disaster. Even Boman Irani fails to register; this could be his worst performance to date.
What's that: Esha better go slow on her fitness regime. In one scene, her arms positively show better cuts and muscles than Viveik's and Fardeen's put together.
What to do: Watch a rerun of Masti on cable instead. Indra Kumar better watch it, too, and introspect where and why he's gone wrong so badly this time.
