2011 will be considered a watershed year for Bollywood Film's! Two breakout performances that are virtually uncontested and unmatched...Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar and now Vidya Balan in The Dirty Picture! These are the only two actors in the current lot, who are entirely true to their professions and are artists first and foremost, stars and celebrity later! And this committment of theirs towards their profession, shows in their work!
Just like Ranbir got into the very soul of Jordan in Rockstar, Vidya seems to have transformed, literally, into Silk...letting go of every possible inhibition...and just giving her mind, body and soul to the character! Its a very bold role and more importantly, its a very bold act by Vidya...and the sort of performance, for which no amount of superlatives and adjectives are enough to praise!👏
Loved The Dirty Picture to bits and there wasn't even a nano-second, when I turned my head here or there or even bothered to adjust my seat in the theatre! The film hooked me from the very first shot!😃
The first mentionable thing about the film are the splendid performances, led by Vidya Balan, who is indisputably, the most talented actress in India, to Naseerudin Shah, who is such a treat to watch, to Emraan Hashmi who has a smouldering screen presence to Rajesh Sharma, a small time character artist, who had perhaps the best punch lines in the film, playing Selva Ganesh.
Second is the outstanding screen-play and the sometimes racy, mostly raunchy, but inarguably brilliant dialouges in the film! Kudos to Milan and Rajat for the same! I would have mentioned some of my fav dialouges from the film, but I lost count of it after a while...they kept coming so frequently!😆 (Emraan and Selva Ganesh had the wittiest dialouges in the film!)
Third is the splendid production values...and the detailing which has gone into making a film set in the 1980's! The art-director got it flawlessly...from the garish costumes to the Maruti 800's...it was bang on!
Fourthy, kudos to Ekta Kapoor for taking up, what is certainly on paper, an 'uncommerical' storyline, putting a not so big star in the lead and generally playing against bollywood's conventional rules on film making! The gamble has obviously played and no one except Ekta could have done it with such panache!
Strangely, I found the film to be a very comfortable watch, despite, Vidya's ample assets literally bursting out of her blouse in every scene!😆 Because the director has not exploited the female lead just for the sake of skin-show and sex, and when you watch the film, you understand, how important it is that the character of Silk dresses the way she does...hence, in no way is the film sleazy or vulgar!
Watching Malaika Arora Khan gryate on Munni Badnaam Hui or Katrina Kaif dancing with a hundred men in Shiela Ki Jawaani is far, far more embrassing!
There are a number of flaws in the film too...but the positives of the film far overrides the negatives, so will refrain from adding what I thought was lacking in The Dirty Picture!
Some scenes that stood out;
Silk faking an orgasm while shooting for a film...how good was she?😲👏 If only our National Awards Film Committee wasn't loaded with prudish types, this scene itself would have fetched her a National Award!
Silk's speech when she recieves the award!
Silk's dance in front of Nayla's apartment...fabulous stuff! I could not stop laughing!😆
Silk watching Surya and his wife making love through the key-hole...Vidya's expressio's were beyond description here...the way she portryaed grief...anger...envy...shock...betrayal...mind-blowing!
Almost all the scenes between Ebrahim and Silk...the most touching and sweet one being when he comes to her house and they both chat and look at picutres! Amazingly natural chemistry between Viday and Emraan!
Every scene which had Naseer! What an actor! He can line up all the Khan's and teach them a thing or two about acting! He was pure evil in the film and it is nothing but a tribute to his enormous talent, that he does it so effortlessly!
Ramakant's (Tushaar) dance in his room! I thought it was the funniest scene I have seen in a while! Tushaar is such a natural playing the bumbling idiot!😆
Overall, its a highly entertaining, performance oriented and strong film! A must watch!
