There are times when fatigue sets in while watching the usual masala films that have precious little to offer in terms of content. The customary item songs, the much explored panoramic locales of Europe, the familiar dialogue and drama catering to the NRIs… how one longs for something fresh to come out in cineplexes that would pep you up again.

2011 has been a landmark year for Bollywood. Besides the success ratio which has shot upwards, the material churned out by dream merchants has been much better when compared to previous years. Irrespective of how these films fare, you cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that there has been a genuine effort to give the audience something fresh.

Write your own movie review of Shakal Pe Mat Ja
SHAKAL PE MAT JA doesn't have a Khan, Kumar, Roshan or Kapoor starring in it, but it attempts to tell a story that's refreshingly different. However, it's the screenplay that plays a complete spoilsport. What could've been an interesting movie turns out to be part attention-grabbing, part drab, part prolonged. Wish this could've been another high-wit, low cost comedy that's fun to watch, like TERE BIN LADEN.

SHAKAL PE MAT JA is a story of four young boys who get caught up as suspects at the Delhi International Airport. They get caught while capturing an aircraft landing on their camera, which they claim to have shot for a documentary that they are making. With their explanation and situation not being fruitful, they are brought into the interrogation room of the International Airport.

SHAKAL PE MAT JA is based on a true incident that occurred at Delhi Airport, according to first-time director Shubh. Though terrorism is a serious issue and the film tells the story of four youngsters, who are mistaken as terrorists, the director has interspersed light moments all through the narrative. But it's the screenplay that doesn't hold your interest after a point. A few moments are truly wonderful, but the writing goes awry towards the second hour.

There are too many jokes on flatulence, which, after a point of time, appear in poor taste. Besides, the finale with too many characters is amateurish and long-drawn-out and the film, for some reason, is devoid of excitement as it reaches its culmination. Of course, there are some zany moments, especially the sequence when the terrorist [Zakir Hussain] calls up from out of India, enquiring about the plan. Besides, the dialogue are truly bright and witty at places.

First-time director Shubh shows a flair for comic moments and like I pointed out earlier, a few sequences do make you smile/laugh. But the writing is devoid of fun and far from watertight. The title track is catchy and energetic. Cinematography is alright.

Shubh sports the right expressions and his body language adds power and effectiveness to the character he plays. Chitrak is okay in a few sequences, but his dialogue, at times, are incomprehensible. Pratik comes in his element towards the second hour. The kid is quite confident. Amongst veterans, Saurabh Shukla is top notch. In fact, he steals the show with a truly wonderful performance. Raghuvir Yadav is equally fantastic. Aamna Sharif does well, though her role could've been better developed. Zakir Hussain is first-rate. Aditya Lakhia succeeds in making you laugh. Mushtaq Khan, Joy Sengupta, Umang Jain and Rajkumar Kanojia appear in brief roles.

On the whole, SHAKAL PE MAT JA is one of those whacked-out satires that sounds far funnier on paper than on screen.

Linc Entertainment and Ipix Movies' Shakal Pe Mat Ja (A) is the story of four young boys who are mistaken to be terrorists by the police on duty at the airport. Ankit Sharma (Shubh), Rohan Malhotra (Chitrak Bandhopadhyay), Bulai (Harsh Parekh) and Dhruv Sharma (master Pratik Katare) are four friends who have come to take photographs of aircrafts at the airport. They get picked up by the police and one misunderstanding leads to another till they are suspected to be terrorists. Soon, the Anti-Terrorist Squad officer, Chavan (Saurabh Shukla), and police officer Om Prakash (Raghubir Yadav) are convinced, the four are indeed terrorists. What happens thereafter? Are they able to prove their innocence? If so, how?

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review: Script Analysis

Shubh's story about four young boys being picked up by the police and suspected to be terrorists is so juvenile that it hardly makes sense. Shubh's screenplay is more irritating than the story. Even an idiot would realise that the four aren't terrorists from the way they behave and from their naivete. Assuming for a moment that the police and the ATS did not understand that the four are not terrorists, the question that begs an answer is: in that case, why is the police treating them with kid gloves? No terrorists or even suspected terrorists are treated the way the four are. So it is almost like the police and ATS on the one hand and the foursome on the other are playing a cute little game with each other. The way the four boys behave when they are suspected to be terrorists and even when they are pronounced terrorists is ridiculous, to say the least. Likewise, the behaviour of the police and the ATS officers is so idiotic that nothing at all makes any impact whatsoever.

The second half, in which the four set out to run away from custody, is again so long-winding, boring and childish that the audience loses its patience. The entire sequence of the bomb scare at the airport and of the bomb diffusion has been so stupidly handled that it would seem, the writer would have the audience believe that it was a Diwali cracker he was talking about that would explode any moment, not a bomb. It remains unexplained why hundreds of passengers refuse to leave the airport premises even when the bomb is about to explode and, instead, prefer to wait and watch if it gets diffused or not. Were they so excited about being blown to death if the diffusion failed? And the way the ATS chief, Chavan, behaves when the bomb is about to explode and when it is being attempted to be diffused is seen to be believed! Truly, the writer doesn't seem to know the difference between a real bomb and a Laxmi bomb that is burst on Diwali. The tracks of Amina (Aamna Sharif) and of Prachi, the girlfriend of Ankit, seem meaningless. All in all, the screenplay could easily bag an award or two for the worst screenplay. Even the dialogues are unbelievably poor!

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review: Star Performances

Shubh acts naturally although he doesn't look like a hero. Chitrak Bandhopadhyay is quite nice but his accented English will hardly be understood. His farting scenes are overdone and are irritating more than entertaining. Harsh Parekh is hardly average. Master Pratik Katare irritates. Saurabh Shukla is not sure whether he should be doing comedy in serious scenes or should be serious in them. He hardly creates an impact. Raghubir Yadav is at least earnest. Aamna Sharif is wasted. Mushtaq Khan overacts. Aditya Lakhia is alright. It is sad to see Zakir Hussain being so hopelessly wasted. Joy Sengupta tries to be funny but fails. Others lend weak support.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review: Direction & Technical Aspects

Shubh's direction is as dull and disjointed as his script. Music (Salim-Sulaiman) is average. The lyrics are too commonplace to be true. Amar Mohile's background score is rather dull. Camerawork (Sahir Raza) is average. Sets (Sunil Nigvekar) are hardly worth mentioning. Editing (Nipun Gupta) is terribly weak. Production and technical values are pathetic.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Review: Komal Nahta's Verdict

On the whole, Shakal Pe Mat Ja is a poor show from start to finish and will meet with a disastrous fate.

Story

Story: Shakal Pe Mat Ja revolves around four friends- Shubhashish Mukherjee, Pratik Katare, Harshal Parekh and Chitrak Bandhopadyay, who become victims of suspicion at the Delhi Airport, on a high alert day. Cops catch hold of them while they happen to take a shot of an American aircraft, which is a terrorist target, for their documentary film on terrorism. Senior inspector Raghuveer Yadav and ATS officer Saurabh Shukla become further suspicious, when terrorist Aamna Shariff enters in the picture and creates an impression that they all belong to one gang. The rest of the movie is about whether these chaps get to prove their innocence and also, how police comes to the rescue of passengers by curbing the terrorist attack.

Story Treatment: SPMJ rests on a very conventional storyline, which lacks lustre in the terms of a poor screenplay. The effort of making a political satire falls flat, as the filmmaker goes overboard while tackling the subject. In fact, some portions of the story have an uncanny resemblance with SRK starrer Baadshah and Ali Zafar's Tere Bin Laden. Dialogues prove to be the saving grace of the movie but, become monotonous after a point of time, as the plot thickens.

Star Cast: Shubhashish Mukherjee doesn't convince as an actor. In fact, he overacts at some points, which seems quite obvious. Pratik Katare and Harshal Parekh look adorable and give a fine performance. Chitrak Bandhopadyay is promising as a debutant, but looks like a replica of Kunal Kapoor in Delhi Belly, especially in the 'fart' sequence. Saurabh Shukla and Raghuveer Yadav are 'A' class. Ditto for Zakir Hussain as chief of Al Baqaida.

Direction: Shubhashish Mukherjee too fails to leave an impact as a director. Various loopholes kill the movie. There are points where the storyline doesn't even move an inch and the entire first half bores the viewer to death. The failure of cops, who are unable to identify the four friends at the airport after latter dodge the former, looks unbelievably annoying. The way Aamna Sharif's character moves around the airport with no fear, despite cops looking for her adds on to misery.

Music/ Cinematography/ Dialogues/Editing: Music is refreshing, but has no potential to be a chartbuster album. Cinematography draws attention, though second half is bland. Dialogues and editing induce life in the film, which makes it at least tolerable at some points.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: Some good performances, dialogues and experimental editing are the strong points. Loopholes in screenplay, a thin storyline and confusing direction are the weaknesses.

On the whole, Shakal Pe Mat Ja doesn't leave a mark at all and can be easily given a miss.

Trailer
Music video: Shakal Pe Mat Ja
Story: A bunch of amateur documentary filmmakers end up in trouble when they are caught photographing planes at the Delhi Airport without permission. Arrested by the airport police, headed by the bumbling Raghuvir Yadav, they are viewed as prospective terrorists, until they actually foil a terrorist's plot to plant a bomb in one of the flights taking off from the airport.

Movie Review: Brave effort by a group of youngsters to make a film which has been co-produced by Hrishitaa Bhatt (actor) and directed by Shubh, the hero of the film. There is a sincere effort by these newbies to script and create a comedy of errors centred round the issue of terrorism and the paranoia it has created all over. But seriously, can't say how apt it is to fool around with such a sensitive topic and create parodies out of terror czars like Osama. Here, you have Omama ( Zakir Hussain) and his terror network, Al-Baqaeda, hellbent on creating mayhem in India and outdoing the antics of Osama. Of course, Omama and his jihadis are bumbling buffoons. Now how funny is that?

Moreover, the film is funny, only in bits and parts and mostly remains an amateur attempt at making a comedy. There is too much and too loud background music, intended to make you laugh, in case you miss the humour. You mostly do. And there are too many characters running around helter-skelter in a single venue, the Delhi Airport, to sustain the inordinate length of the film. The use of the burqa clad figures as decoys and the red bag as the bomb is too stereotypical, considering this could have been an innovative, out of the box, youthful vision.

In terms of performance too, the film has nothing to showcase, except the efforts of veterans likeSaurabh Shukla, the affable ATS cop and Raghuvir Yadav, the Dilli cop, who keep the drama flowing. A bit more training and gravitas in their approach towards the craft, then maybe there could be a film to watch out from this young group of wannabe filmmakers.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja Dull Hero Hitler In Love (Pun) Bumper

Friday 18th November 2011 17.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Shakal Pe Mat Ja opened to a dull 0-5% response while the other release Na Jaane Kabse had practically no audience and shows cancelled. Both the films will not be able to survive at the box office.

Rocktar was not much lower than Thursday as it maintained shows at multiplexes all over apart from Punjab.

In Punjab Hero Hitler In Love, a Punjabi film on the lines of Gadar Ek Prem Katha took an earth shattering 100% start at multiplexes while single screens was complete havoc with theatres going over capacity. There has already been three Punjabi blockbusters this year in Punjab and this may be the fourth.

Keep-------------Smiling !!😊
