It was like a khichdi...They were confused abt whom to aim the movie at...

If they were aiming at a more international audience, then the simplistic story, the cliche characters/situations (Boy girl fall in love and elope...REALLY??), the mundane music, hrithik's wannbe hollywoodness, all ruined the prospects there...

And if they were aiming at the indian audience, then the excessive use of english n spanish, along with lack of any indian sensibilities whtsoever (set in vegas, no song and dance, no nativity in the film, all the actors look like foreigners including hrithik etc) work against the film there...

So its like dhobhi ka kutta, na ghar ka na ghaat ka...

It didnt impress the indians, and it didnt impress the westerners because it was a mish mash of both sensibilities, and hence worked with neither...

i think the major problem was that audience couldnt relate to the movie at all. usually, females tend to relate to the lead, but then who is barabara mori.. she aint indian, she doesnt speak the language, was she even promoting the movie???
who relates to HR who basically marries series of women for green cards, in a full out masala movie? none of the indian male men!!!

then when people did go to see the movie, the english and spanish stuff was such a turn off... if you are indian, what does spanish do for you???

it was an interesting movie. I liked it
But the main reason it didnt work is the language. It was more focused on International audience than the India. Lack of star-power was also the reason why it didnt work. HR was the only noticeable star in the movie. Never knew Barbara before and we barely saw Kangana. So overall there are several issues why the movie didnt work..

I think the best part of the movie was the kissing between these hot two! Hrithik is such a inspiration for guys on how to kiss hot women! He has kissed Aish, Katrina, Barbara, etc.! And I love how he is not afraid to show it. The movie was not that bad like people make it out to be! Hrithik puts his 100% into everything. It was the language barrier! But, I enjoyed it since I don't speak Hindi that much. I love the mix of Spanish and English! 😍😍😍😍😍

Cool idea Maddy!
I don't think there was a problem with Hrithik being the main protagonist. Acting wise I think he gave a pretty good performance. I think had another actress replaced Barbara..say PC or Katrina I think it would've failed even more miserably just because the expectations of Hrithik working with Katrina/PC would've been even more heightened.
Not sure what changing the director would've done. I think the script was weak. The movie was boring, I just couldn't get into it. Cinematography was so pretty! It's all I remember from the movie.. great backdrops!

Kites felt like an 80s style movie with villainous families modernized by setting it in the US with a Mexican lead. Very shoddy and cliched screenplay. The pre-launch promotions made it seem like some path breaking movie...bad idea!

I liked the movie...but then again I'm not Indian...Hrithik had a little too much make up on for my taste...but he still looked fab...
I didn't like the climax...
But I totally understand why the Indian audience did not like the movie...there was nothing they could relate to...and then there was the language barrier.
I think they fell cheated in a way...because the movie was promoted as being for their audience whereas it was obvious that it was anything but...

I think they should have just said from the get go that it was a movie for Hrithik trying to woo the international market...and people would have watched it with that in mind and not totally reject it...
Instead, the audience just felt like they were being taken for a ride...that's why the movie fell flat on its face...Anyone who underestimate the audience learns it the hard way!

I think the problem with Kites was due in large part to the language. The English/Spanish/Spanglish vibe just didn't contribute anything to the film, if anything, it sucked the life out of it. Papa Roshan just got too ambitious, releasing it in English and wanting Kites to be the base of Hrithik's international super stardom.

Not sure what the Intl BO numbers were like, Maddy, maybe you can help me out here. But I could see why Kites could be a success overseas and a complete dud domestically.

Did it remind anyone else of Revenge? Not the show but the old 90's movie with Costner and Stowe? I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the two. Of course Kites had the distinct Roshan/Bollywood flare...😆
